help with my cat?

scince i got the car i noticed my cat hangs kind of low, i just got the extension pipe replaced because the old one broke off, is it suppose to be touching the underbody? it looks like theres a thin sheet of metall attatched to the underbody of my car the same size as the cat, is there suppose to be some other pices to hold it in? it hangs down about an inch. when i go over little bumps and dips i hear like a metal scraping noise, its a stock v8 305 4 barrel, on a 1985 z28

Re: help with my cat?

The sheet of metal is a heat shield. If it wasnt there, your floor pans may burn a little and cause the carpet to also burn. It is supposed to hang a little bit off that shield, but not too much. If it is bouncing, something has to be loose. I would get under the car and inspect it from front to rear and see if there are any broken hangers or something along those lines.

Re: help with my cat?

It could easily be that the rubber of the cat hanger, with age, has broken. If you have a T-5, check the fix:

Re: help with my cat?

When you crawl under to look at the heat shield take a 7mm socket with an extension on it. Mine used to vibrate sometimes, I pulled it off, painted it with 1600 deg. paint and put it back with a dab of high heat copper gasket maker on every spot that touched the body. No noise, no worries.
