Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Hey everyone, I recently finished and installed a 421 small block in my 84 Z-28. It has Hooker Super Comp headers and im looking to finish off the exhaust. Im thinking of going with a Mufflex Ypipeand am wondering if there is an exhaust out there that will bolt diretly to it and support around 600hp. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!!

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Yeah their 4" single exhaust with a Dynamax Ultra Flo straight thru muffler should be more than enough.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Did you get it finished?
I just bought a set of Hooker LT's for my 406, Mufflex Y-Pipe & their 4" system w/Magnaflow muffler. I haven't started installing yet, but I am wondering if you had any issues.
The Center-to-center distance as my headers sit on my car is 19.5". Tech @ Mufflex says the Ypipe center to center is 18.5 but adjustable because of its "Slip-fit" design that allows you to rotate the pipes individually to fit.
If you have it finished, I'm just wondering how it went...

Hey 25th did you start to install that exhaust yet? I am looking for a whole new system myself.. I would like to get all the pieces together so when my motor comes back I can install all of it at once. How do the hookers fit?

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
I didn't do the install, it was way more than what I can do without a carlift. From what I am aware of is that the installer removed oil cooler, steering arm, starter, ground a bunch of the frame away to get them in. He had to re-route the starter wire after lengthening it. The Oilcooler isn't used anymore, other stuff was re-installed. Had a mini-starter to begin with.
I wonder if Mikey84Z had any success with his project...

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Thanks 25th. Freezin cold here also. My shop is heated so it hasn't slowed me down much. I have to pull my wifes car and my truck in every night so the Camaro has to go back against the wall to fit them all in. Its a pita. In the 30's and 40's next week so the wifes car can stay out. lol...Let us know if you or Miky84z make any headway on it.

I sure will let you all know.....
I'm anxious to find out what type of gains I will make! I registered a disappointing 308rwhp @ 5000 with my old SLP Shorties with 1-5/8 primaries on my 406. The 1-5/8 header port was much smaller than the exhaust port on the AFR heads. It was also a 3" exhaust, single in dual out.....oh, and performance cat.
With the Hooker SC's, the 1-3/4 ports match up! I know this motor is capable of much more power and higher RPM's, I'll post the difference when complete.

Thanks. It sounds like the shorties were holding you back quite a bit. I'm sure you will see a pretty substantial gain.

I got a start on it, joints are loose and need tweaking. I just want to get everything hung up then start tightening down. Didn't have much time to work on it today, thats as far as I got.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Was out in the garage this weekend to tighten everything down. As mentioned, the above picture was all loosely put up for fit. Once tightened straight off the header the angles got a bit tighter. The Y-pipe came in contact with the Cross Member, despite the "Flats" in the pipe designed around that.
A new *Modified* cross member is in the works. Stand by for further details

How bad did it hit? From looking at my car that cross member needs a customizing anyhow. Show it if you do it. Pics please.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
I needed to rotate the pipes to gain a little distance center-to-centet width. If I rotate it any further the xmember gets in the way. Sorry no pic of the interference but when the new crossmember gets built I will post pics of the results

Well I got a set of hooker long tubes. Thanks Mike. Still waiting on engine unfortunately. Are those 3 in pipes leading to the Y? Have you had a chance to work on the cross member 25th?

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
My installer is at the shop working on the cross member issue today.
However it appears im having more fitament issues. As I anticipated the width center to center on the "Y" is shorter than the distance of the center-to-center distance of the headers on the car. Even if you turn the pipes to elongate that distance, that only screws up the geometry of the remaining sections of the pipes that will in turn not line up. It appears that more customization is needed. Ill keep you updated as I go, with pictures.
The first pic I posted in post #15 it looks like its going to be all good. But once the connections are connected fully ready for a clamp, its a different story. That picture only has the sections very loosely connected.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Few more pictures...you can see them here or in one of my albums.
All these pictures are taken WITHOUT a cross member, however clearance is left for one to be installed after it gets modified to fit. All the pipes from the headers are on and ready to be clamped. This is strictly a mock-up install for now.
Here you will see the driver side is way mismatched to the "Y".
This picture is the same accept the passenger side is mismatched.
Here, I added a 2 inch section to the passenger side. As you can see the driver side needs one now, at least they are aligned.
Now that the "Y" is pushed back, I'm sure that's going to change the 4" pipe going back. Once I get that far, I will cut the required section out of it.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Is it supposed to favor one side of the tunnel? Are the pipes coming off the collectors exactly the same? Are they marked left or right? Seems weird that you need to extend the pipes a couple inches. Keep us informed.

The Y-pipe is "fine"...hes just trying to get it to fit a "fancy way". Thats why hes not getting it the way he wants it

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
It is slightly favored toward the passengers side, eventually it will go up & over the passengers side rear axle. Pipes off the collector are different, there are 5 separate pieces that make up the "Y-pipe". Each leg has 2 pieces and then the Y itself where the legs connect. Its not marked left or right, the pieces given to me will only geometrically fit one way.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
I know you're just a newbie here, but unless you have something intelligent to say that contributes to the topic, you're just adding clutter to the thread. For instance, show picture of your iroc with the exhaust and explain how it went. If you knew thirdgens, you would know that they're not all carbon copies of each other.
There can be several reasons why it interferes, if you had saggy motor mounts, the engine sits lower. This would make it more likely to clear. My mounts are like new So i dont gain from that. If you have AFR Heads like mine, the exhaust ports are a fraction of an inch higher which brings the headers up.. This is what i have to work with, there is nothing fancy about it.

If you READ post 15 you would see that I put that all the joints were loose and needs tweaking. And then if you READ my post above where it says they are all connected, ready for clamp, that would answer your question.

2. I do have saggy motor mounts. So good for me, my mufflex Y-pipe fits
3. I work for a living so I don't have money for good heads. I just ave a lil money in my stock L98 heads.
4. Lets swap heads so you can get your Y-pipe to fit.
5. Their are pics of my exhaust on this site. (no further detail...)

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust
Just my 2 cents, I bet those AFR heads both have a higher port and are angled differently at the face, causing the locations of the header to be wider and higher in the car.

I am guessing you maybe right.
Hey 25th, modifying the cross member isn't going to make it fit? I want this system, but if my raised port heads are going to cause the same problems I may just get the 4in. sections and have a custom y built. Is that an option through muff flex?
Your workin through it, keep it up bro, you'll get there.

That's just a stupid comment. Implying the guy is loaded when he's working underneath a car on jack stands in the middle of winter, not in some heated garage up a on a lift. I would be appreciative of someone who posts pictures like that, could help someone else down the line. (But it's not you, so just be a dick)

Anyways...pics of my LTs + Mufflex Y-pipe ARE on this site, and a simple search would pull them up.
-Maybe when I "touch up my exhaust ill take some new pics.

Okay, moving forward with more pictures.....
I got everything on 100%, no half-on/half-off connections.
The thing is, it might be hanging rather low.
The clearance on both sides for the factory cross member may be enough.....
Driver Side: I might have to move it around to put the "Flat" spot facing more upward.
Passenger Side:
Next I trimmed about 1-1/2" off the front of the 4" piece going all the way back. I just don't see how 4" is going to fit up over the axle (just yet). I'll find out at another day, getting late.

That is lowww. My car would crush that flat first trip out. My custom y i did for hooker lt's went further to the right side of car not exactly directly in middle of driveshaft tunnel. Getting y pipe parts around trans subframe and crossmember is hard without giving up clearance or unless you use 2.5" pipe or go oval

Here it is, ready to weld up. I took out the extension piece that I put in yesterday on drivers side that resulted in hanging low and put it in a different location up more towards the header.

To start with, that comment is worthless without pics. What ill end up doing with that is find a new location that is desirable for placing said O2 sensor. Drill and weld in a new bung.

Why do you need pics...
You know where the 02 bugs are, they need to be facing out ward and accessible.
Thats the "sweet" spot that-that other guy was talking about. No offense, but this is so easy.
I didn't spend a fraction of the time you've spent-
(just more money, I had to paying a shop to weld it together after it fell off while driving...twice[clamped together]: SOB)
(Typical 3rdgens huh...)
-clock it like I mention then let us know if that works for you.
