I've seen some Borla and Magnaflow exhausts also but they didn't list the series or model, who posts anything thanks alot post some YouTube vids if possible so I see an actual sound

I have a magnaflow cat back. Its on youtube somewhere. Magnaflow only makes one catback for our cars.

Re: Best muffler?? with a nice sound
i have a flowmaster on my 87 right now. i really like it, but since quality has diminished (supposedly) if i had to do it again, i'd probably get a dynomax, sounds great on my 4.8L silverado.

My car has no muffler just the cat and to me it sounds nice. I was surprised at how quiet it was. My tpi firebird is louder with a magnaflow on it but i like the way it sounds also.

If you can find it, I have an edelbrock RPM muffler on mine (vids in sig). Not sure how it compares to the new SDT mufflers, but I am happy with mine. Deeper tone than a flowmaster, but not as loud

Go with a Porter Muffler or a Classic Chambered Powerstick. Both have a real ballsy sound, and best of all- neither has any drone.

I have the powerstick muffler. Best thing about it is no drone. And a really cool unique sound.

Re: Best muffler?? with a nice sound
I've sold my Camaro and now have an LS-powered 1970 Firebird and a 1972 Cutlass 350, both of which have Porters, and I can honestly say I can't imagine another muffler sounding better. Deep rumble at idle, no drone at cruising speed, and at WOT it makes both of the cars sound like beasts!!!!
I will say, putting them on a 3rd gen car would take a little creativity! You could stack them behind the axle in the OEM position if you had true duals, but there wouldn't be enough room in the tunnel with a torque arm...

I checked out the porters on you tube, they sound awesome. As long as they have something that fits under our cars.

Ive used dynomax, flowmaster, borla, and even a thrush glasspack on 3rd gens. I would say Borla is #1

Re: Best muffler?? with a nice sound
Since it hasn't been brought up yet, I'll chime in about the Hooker Aerochamber muffler.
I just installed a 3" Hooker cat-back from a 4th gen, and it's about the same decibel level as stock exhaust. Granted my little LB9 isn't flowing much air, so even running it with nothing after the cat wasn't as loud as an LT1 with a Magnaflow.
Sound wise it has a slightly deeper tone than the stock 2 1/4" system, but I can barely hear the exhaust when I step on it. I like it, but I certainly wish it was a little louder.
There is a vid on YouTube vid of an IROC with headers, gutted cat, and the same exhaust, and it sounds really good in my opinion. Maybe it's an L98 I don't know.

Re: Best muffler?? with a nice sound
The muffler you want really depends on the sound you want. Magnaflow offers a more mild sound, flowmaster sounds like crap, Borla and Dynomax are loud yet refined, and SLP is raspy and loud (probably my favorite).

If you think an AeroChamber is stupid loud, you've never heard open headers.

With a center inlet, it's basically a straight through muffler with some tuning chambers in it to cut out the high frequencies, and that's exactly what it sounds like.
I would very much prefer something closer to the volume of a flowmaster 80 or something, but this thing sounds good and a 3.5" pipe is just gonna be loud.

Re: Best muffler?? with a nice sound
The Edelbrock SDT muffler, and their exhaust systems as a whole, have been discontinued for a few years. In 2004 I bought the Edelbrock system and it came with the SDT muffler, it was horrible compared to the older RPM muffler, sounded like a knock-off Flowmaster (which it was) and droned like a pig...
Thank you for the plug! I'm the sales manager for Porter Mufflers these days and you are correct, no drone and an awesome sound. We ran them on a Superflo dyno before buying the company in 2010, against every product you can name, and they out-performed every one of them!
