1984 Camaro Sport Coupe 305 exhaust

Did 1984 Camaro sport coupes come from the factory with dual exhaust? And if so, was it the same stock set up that came on a 1984 Z28 with the same base 305 V8? Thanks!

Re: 1984 Camaro Sport Coupe 305 exhaust

Dual exhaust came in about three forms on thirdgens...
  1. Y pipe behind the manifolds, into one cat, one pipe to the muffler, two pipes out of the muffler.
  2. Y pipe behind the manifolds, into one cat, one pipe to about the axle, splitting off into two pipes, each going to a double T arrangement, two mini mufflers and two tail pipes.
  3. One pipe from each manifold to a pair of cats, then Y-pipe back to one pipe to the single muffler, two pipes out.
None of the above is really dual in the true sense. No thirdgen had true duals. Of the three above the dual cat version made the most power.

An LG4 in a sport coupe would have the exact same exhaust as an LG4 in a Z28. Which is pretty much the same exhaust you'd find on a LO3 TBI V8, lower output LB9 305 TPI cars, and aside from slight change to the Y pipe and different manifolds - most of the V6 cars. L69 HO 305s, most better 305 TPI, and all the 350 cars got higher flow manifolds, better Y-pipe, and a 2.75" intermediate pipe. The exhaust is generally one of the big contributing factors to the difference between the low output and high output engines.

Thanks Drew! When I bought the car used many years ago, it needed a new muffler. The muffler shop pointed out that the car only had one exhaust pipe and their shop manual indicated it should have 2 tailpipes, which is what I had them install. The car was 11 years old when I bought it so I guess the previous owner decided to have a single tailpipe. Thanks again for clarifying this!

#2 was a great sounding exhaust. That is what came on my 82 Z28 pace car.

That bugs me so much! But I don't want to be known as a spelling ****. To me it's as bad as , "Car for Sell" or "I'm gonna sale my car".
