Backpressure=Torque?

ok, I have a pull cut-out and I was wondering if when I'm at the drag strip should I :
Keep it open the whole time, on the launch
or Launch then pull it.
I've heard that restrictive Exhaust will create Low-end Torque but if the cut-out was pulled I'd lose that power on the launch.

REstrictive exhaust creating torque is a myth. Back pressure is confused with VELOCITY. Down low, the volume of exhuast gasses is low, so there is less velocity, and therefore less 'scavenging effect' It is this scavenging effect which promoted low end torque. Now, a smaller dia header/pipe and so on would promote higher velocity, but up top, it would be very restrictive. Anyone please feel free to add to this or correct me if I am in error!

Darn, I was hoping I could point out the backpressure myth, since I just learned about it last week. Check out the thread 3" duals for a daily driver, for a very in depth explanation of backpressure.

Search for backpressure or back pressure and put ed maher in the name box. He had a great explanation a while back. Now that I think about it, I can't remember if it was Ed or Vader--try both.

Who was it who made the "pick up a piece of pipe and blow through it" analogy? As goofy as it sounds, it actually made a lot of sense and really explained velocity/scavenging quite well.
