Camaro Sport Coupe or LT Sport Coupe???

Hey again everybody. I was readin through some articles on the main site, and I came across the article "Third-Gen Evolution-- Highlights of an overlooked decade in Camaro history" in Camaro Performers, Fall 1998, Volume 3, No. 2. While reading the details of my car's year, 1987, I read this:

"The center mounted stop light was moved to the rear spoiler on LT , Z28, and IROC models.
The Camaro Sport Coupe continued the center break light mounted on the exterior hatch. LT "

Now, my 3rd brake light is on my rear spoiler, yet my RPO codes and VIN number say nothing about my car being an LT. Am I to assume that it originally came with a third light on top of the rear hatch, and that it was changed to the spoiler? Honostly, that wouldn't surprise me, one my car's previous owners obviously wanted it to be a Z28, because he painted on a black stripe for gfx, and put an IROC/Z28 hood and front end cover on.

What do you guys think about this?

Re: Camaro Sport Coupe or LT Sport Coupe???

The LT was an option on the Sport Coupe, so it will not reflect in the VIN. It's exactly the same for the 1987 IROC-Z. The IROC-Z was an option on the Z28.

Am I to assume that it originally came with a third light on top of the rear hatch, and that it was changed to the spoiler?

Here's the scoop. For 1987, the third brake light was moved from the leading edge (top) of the hatch glass to the rear spoiler on Camaros equipped with the rear spoiler. The 1987 Sport Coupe does not come with a rear spoiler, it is an option. So all Sport Coupes (with and without the LT option) without the rear spoiler had the third brake light in the 1986 position, the leading edge of the hatch glass.

Hopefully, you still have the SPID sticker in your center console storage compartment. Look for RPO B4E (LT) and D80 (rear spoiler). This should solve the mystery.

Ok thanks, I'll check for those two codes. I know I have the rear spoiler code, but I don't remember if there was a B4E, although I doubt it.

The LT had many standard features that were optional on the Sport Coupe. Here are some off the top of my head:

Interior
Custom Interior (45-degree angled stitching)
Luggage Compartment Trim (carpeted rear sides)
Locking Rear Floor Storage (covers the well)
A/C is standard (optional on SC)

Exterior
Silver "CAMARO" Nameplates (gold on SC)
"LT" Badging on Sail Panels
Full Wheel Covers on 14" wheels (optional was the previous years' gold Berlinetta wheel but in silver)

Another way to discern an LT is the tire size sticker in the driver's side door jamb. It will list a 14-inch tire, not the 15-inchers found on all SC's.

This is totally off topic, but I saw the originator of this post is from Waldoboro, ME. Hey, been to Moody's Diner lately? I love that place! My family trips when I was a kid always involved staying in Moody's Cabins...I like Waldoboro

Willie,

Not to argue, but the only Camaro's that got the gold fender badges were the Berlinetta's. The coupes all used silver Camaro fender badges.

Also of the LT's I've seen, all had spoilers. I've yet to see one without.

Didn't the LTs badges on the pillars come in gold? I thought this was because the LTs stripes were in gold...could be wrong though...

As a matter of fact, my girlfriend and I were both on break last week, and we went to Moody's and got pie for dessert 3 nights in a row . Yea, I like Waldoboro too! Moody's is about a 5 minute drive away too!

Jason,

You guys seem really close. Hey, why don't you check out this alleged LT and report back to us?

According to this site, aren't all 87 LT's LG4 equipped?
