Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
most of the times people seem to try to fill the _ _ _ and it sticks we all know the GTO to stand for Gran Turismo Omologato or we think we do? but last week i had MECUM AUCTION on and they had a GTO on the block and the guy was talking about how most think it stands for Gran Turismo Omologato but he was saying its not true i was like what the hell..if my camaro is a touring car why in the hell don't i have a frickin cup holder lol

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Guys, I'm not sure where the breakdown is but the LT is a model line as is the Sport Coupe and the Z28. Those are the models available in 1987 for the Camaro. You then got option packages or trim packages available for each model. The above paperwork was simply corrections to the brochure and also an option breakdowns for each model.
And the GTO does stand for Grand Turismo Omologato. It was derived from the Ferarri GTO. Just because someone on TV says differently, doesn't make it so.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Scott, but technically, not wanting to be a douche here, wasn't the Berlinetta the only seperate model in the Camaro line up until 1986 when it was discontinued?
Only because like I mentioned before that the VIN numbers on standard third gen Camaro's were 1G1FP and the Berlinetta's were 1G1FS.
But I agree with you on the GTO desgination. Courtesy of the late Mr. John Z. DeLorean and Ferrari.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Exactly! They are salesman. They don't know all of the details of the car or it's history. They are always making sales comments about cars that are incorrect. Barrett-Jackson makes a lot of mistakes also. They advertise what the seller gives them. Pontiac advertises where the name GTO came from in their lineup, who is Mecum to dispute that?

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
I'll throw this out here for anybody that's interested...
I have a horn cap for a LT that I'm using on my car. It's just about in perfect condition, or at least very good.
If anybody needs it for their car, I'd gladly trade it for an IROC style cap, which are much more common.
let me know if anybody is interested, I'll take close up pic and post it

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was !!!!(inspired)!!!! by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato, (exact translation is Grand Tourer Homologated) which means officially certified for racing in the Grand tourer class. The name drew protest from purists, who considered it close to sacrilege. so what i get out of that is GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato to ferrari but to pontiac its just GTO!!!!!!!!!

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
A while ago someone wanted info. on who owned a 87 Camaro LT for a personal registry. A few months ago I bought one for my son here in N. Cali. Silver in color, auto trans, cruise control, AC, but it has manual wind up windows. Nice car in awesome shape. 1 dent, hardly visible.. The typical little old lady driver story. Near perfect interior, runs great...87,000 orig. miles on orig. engine

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
I picked up my 87 camaro lt a few months ago. It has been grourage kept since the 90's. Bodys in great shape other than a dent in the front left corner panel thats mostly poped out now. Interior is in great condition with minimal wear other than a rip in the top of the storage box in the middle. I just finished instaling a more updated sound system so i could listen to my ipod in the car.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Finally done replacing the head gaskets and found out the previous owners mechanic used a 5.7 long block on the engine rebuild so I thought I would paint the engine and dress it up a little.
Last edited by twood; 06-29-2011 at 08:53 PM. Reason: engine rebuild was long block not short block.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
The previous owner only cleaned the car and did very minor repairs. The documents he supplied with the car covered everything from oil changes up to the engine replacement and body work.
The RH head was good and I replaced the valve seals while it was off. I ended up replacing the LH head because it had a repaired crack that looked like it was opening up again. The engine has 191 heads which I believe are 350 heads. The intake and exhaust are from the original 305. My guess is the mechanic used the 350 block and heads because it was cheaper than a 305. I don't think the previous owner even knew the new engine was a 350.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Hello fellow LT owners,
I am currently 19 and attending Millersville University in Southeast PA, anyway my first and current car is a 87 LT. What is pretty cool is not only is it my daily driver, but I purchased the car from cdartz who posted the same car on the first page of this thread. Anyway since I bought it I put a lowering kit on it and tinted the windows. I also put IROC-Z lettering on the side, since it has the motor and suspension parts of an IROC-Z. Currently I am thinking about removing those stickers and placing the good old LT badges back on. Anyway here is some pics of my pride and joy!

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
What gives you the impression that it is a 1987 LT? Does the steering wheel look like the ones on this thread (basically a non leather Z28/IROC steering wheel with horn cap that says CAMARO LT). The two LT emblems on either side of the sail panels of the car. But just to be sure, do you have the original RPO code sticker in the center console or build sheet under the seat?
You'll be looking for RPO code B4E.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Triple stripes. I had the passenger door repainted about 10 yrs ago d/t a dent and they put on new ones. The old ones were a little different. May have a pic somewhere just for my own curiosity. Car is completely stock and original(except for a cd player and new parts as needed) as far as I know. Has the RPO codes in the center storage console which is cool.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Wondering if someone could help me? In general, is there any added value for having an LT due to the low production numbers? Or is the price generally at or near the price for the standard coupe? Thanks

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
I agree with MY87LT. NADA shows it's about $330 more for an LT. An LT Convertible is about $1300 more than a sport coupe. My calculation. NADA actually has N/A for LT verts due to not enough information. There is $1000 difference between a standard SC and a vert SC.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
i have a 87 camaro lt, that i got for $380, ive read a little of these post here, it a ttop car it had a 305 carb and it had louvers on it when i got it,the interior was black in it, the body in good shape other then the floor boards form sitting in the glass from the car i got it from, someone said there were 800 made, is that inculding the ones with ttops or just the ttops.
i plan on rebluiding the car since it is kinda a rare one if that info was true, and if i do should i redo it back to the original, cause it is a all mathing number car???

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
That's correct. There was 794 LTs made. Redoing it back to original won't make it worth a lot more in my opinion. I'm keeping mine as original as possible because you don't see many original third gen Camaros, especially sport coupes.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
Check out post #77 in this thread. It shows a convertible LT with the front and side profile. The wheels are obviously not stock. Should give you an idea. Oh, and it has the rare LT fog lights.
Does it have the LT specific steering wheel and horn cap? And of course RPO B4E is the give away. I take it you dont have the original code sticker in the center console?

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
MY87LT covered everything I could come up with. The only other thing to do is pay $50 and have GM look up the original invoice for the car. I did this just to prove my car is a real LT and I wanted to see what it had for options. The origninal owner replaced the center console cover and never thought of keeping it for the sticker.

Re: All 87 Camaro LT owners
It looks just like the one in the post number 77 just with out badges,
And it don't have the steering wheel, of a lt, and it dose have the sticker, it was just on with the title, and it dose not have that rpo code but have the rpo code for the.lt opinions
