1982 Trans Am Value

Hi--

Does anyone know what a 1982 Trans Am with 29,000 miles is worth? Car is TOTALLY original (no modifications, ever--including the radio). Factory original paint (red w/black interior).

Car has: T-Tops, power windows, power locks, cruise, black viscount bucket seats in mint condition, rear wiper, AM/FM stereo, WS7 package, Cross-Fire Injection engine. All options (except rear wiper washer) work. Interior/exterior near mint.

I inherited the car, and just did a total tune up (Delco plugs, wires, PCV valve, oxygen sensor, fuel filter, air filters, etc). Runs/drives perfect. Just drove it 400 miles home with zero problems--and average 23mpg. Trying to decide whether or not I should sell it--I don't want to by any means, but I'm a college student, and might need the money to pay for school...but I'm going to try and hold on to it as long as I can! Here's a few pictures...

Any advice on a price would be greatly appreciated.

Nice 1982. I can see the sun has taken it's toll on parts of the car but overall it's in great shape. I'd love to have a red/black t-top with charcoal viscount interior '82 T/A of my own one day.

I say anywhere from $5000 to $8000.

Thanks a lot...Actually there really isn't much fading at all. The picture was just bad (I tried to enhance it since it was somewhat dark). Gauges aren't faded at all and interior is nice and black. No carpet fading either. Here's another dash picture that hopefully shows the interior better.

One thing though--the A/C is currently inoperative. Heater/fan works great, but compressor doesn't engage. All parts are present, and there's actually some pressure (about 8psi) left in the low-pressure line. Any idea why it wouldn't engage? I checked the fuse, and it's fine, but does it require a certain level of pressure to turn on? I was thinking of recharging it with Freeze-12 (an R-12 substitute) and seeing if it would turn on.

The car sat indoors for a couple years unused, and during that time the refrigerant must have leaked out.

Any other value estimates/info would be very helpful. Thanks.

wow, that's one sweet car! I hope I can finde one like that once I've moved to the US this spring!!!

Where is the car located at? Was it ever winter driven? Basicly a car is worth as someone will pay for it, but I'm guessing 5k sounds good!

Nice car. Try to hang on to it. If you do go to sell it though, just dont let it go to one of those Knight Rider idiots. That car would end up being destroyed.

If I where to get my hands on a car in that shape I defenetly would never convert it into a replica, and most real conversion enthusiast wouldn't do it either.

Let me know if you need to sell it

I doubt that...I mean, I've seen people convert Recaro's into KITT cars. I'd hold on to it though, it is a nice looking car. The interior is really nice too, mine looks descent but your's looks brand new compared to mine. As far as price goes, I'd say 5K-8K is a little high. Even with the low mileage I don't think these cars are very desirable unless someone is looking for an '82 specifically. Even though the car has the top of the line (For '82 anyway) CFI, they were still underpowered and the engine has a bad reputation. Alot of people steer clear of CFI's or they just swap the engine or swap it to carb. Also the engine is only a 305. Again, top of the line for '82 but compared to today, most people would probably want a 350. Also there were over 52,000 Trans Am's made in '82 and total production of Firebirds for '82 was over 116,000 so they are not rare by any means, although some people like to think differently. At least you have the original rims and caps. Keep those, even if you don't like them. I say hold on to the car for awhile, I don't think right now is the time to sell it, especially if you are trying to make a profit. There are so many other cars out there that can be found cheaper than $8000 and have better engine options. Don't get me wrong though, I love my '82 and '82's in general, and I wouldn't get rid of it. I got lucky I guess since I only paid $3000 for mine, but I don't have the original engine, It got swapped out by the previous owner for a 400SBC. Another case of the "I hate CFI"

I have a '82 Z28 with 20,000 miles and a 83 with 49,000 miles. Both cars are the CFI version engine with the '82 being a top of the line heavily optioned car. Both cars are bone stock all original and in almost flawless condition.

In my opinion the Trans Ams are not as valuable as the Z28's. Although looks are subjective, I think the Z28's are considered by most as the better of the looking cars.

These are NOT good cars. These years were the low point of GM's history in regard to quality. I've got mine because I had a brand new '82 Z28 in high school - I love these cars because they are what I dreamed about as a 18 year old kid.

This Trans Am pictured should be worth in the $5-$7,000 range if it is as nice as the pictures show and if a buyer with a history similar to mine is interested. It really is a nice car. The Trans Ams were a little more of an "upscale" car than the Z28's. Your Trans Am would be a great car to drive every day as a piece of dependable transportation.

Keep it as long as you can and have fun with it.

Out of that total number produced, How many do think are still on the road? Not that many, and in good condition?? even less... Maybe theres alot more is the warmer climates, but up here in PA they have become extremely rare. I think you have a great car. It looks and runs great, hopefully you kept it. There will always be faster cars out there, but there's something to be said for a unmolested T/A like this.

That is one sweet 82! One question though- are those chrome bodyside moldings? Or is it just the light? I thought they only came in black.

wow! nice car man! you are one lucky bas%!#% lol

be good to it, dont let a moron buy it if youre really going to sell it

glad to see at least one is still nice looking and in existence still, 82 is one of the one year only ones, i havent seen an 82 t/a other than mine in many years now, they are rare in some regions, such as here

everyone lets them rot apart and/or strips them for dirt track racing

but theres none left to do that with now, so..

good luck
keep it a few years in the same condition or better and it will be worth lots more

good investment for someone

mones going no where i am keeping it forever, no matter what

and wow you can sure tlel who the camaro lover is in this thread! damn
these 82 83 84 trans ams and s/e's are th emost beautiful of all the TG f bodies imho,

they are so sleek and non-bulky and not covered in plastic crap, and are the most unique imho

by far

i wish i could find a set of those wheels on that red one for my 82, some previous owner removed mine in its past sometime unfortunately, those are rare to get a hold of

i would remove and keep those wheel covers in a safe palce if i were youo, i cant believe they havent bene stolen by now

congrats

It's been over several years since the owner of that beautiful car has posted on this forum. I wouldn't hold my breath in hopes of a response from him anytime soon.

Just gotta say, I searched up GTA's on google to show my girlfriend how I wanted to refinish my rims last night and I sent her the GTA pic in your signature lol. I spent about 5 minutes drooling over your car and didn't even know you're a thirdgen member until I just saw your post

Re: 1982 Trans Am Value

Hi there!

I am the original poster of this message and just came across it again--forgot about it after nearly 10 years!

Needless to say, I still have the car after all this time. It has around 33k miles on the clock, and I've enjoyed it, though to one poster's previous point, it is not a well engineered car. Even with low miles, squeaks and rattles are somewhat frequent over bumpy pavement. I have kept the car as original as possible and have made no modifications aside from normal items requiring replacement. To that point, in my ownership, I've had to replace: cruise control transducer and speedo cable (old transducer seized and snapped it), ignition module under distributor (left me stranded once), fasten belt module (light wouldn't go out), readjusted CFI system (used to idle high, now runs perfectly), T-Top and door seals, transmission servo cover seal (started leaking), torque converter clutch solenoid (wouldn't disengage), and perhaps a few other items that I'm forgetting at the moment.

The car still runs and drives wonderfully and gets quite a few looks. I keep it garaged, and it rarely sees the sunshine these days. And, it never sees use in the winter.
