Daytona Pace Cars. Possible Reunion at 50th Daytona 500!

Members from several car clubs are working together now to see if there is interest in having a DAYTONA 500 Pace Car REUNION at the 2008 Daytona 500. (Yes, it is early, but this will take a full year to plan).

It looks like the interest is out there, and we already have several ORIGINAL PACE CARS signed up (1996 TA, 1999 TA, 2000 GP, 1999 Parade Car, 2002 Parade Car).

We have some people going to Daytona in October to meet with NASCAR and see if we can do this. We can do it on our own, but with Daytona on board, we can make this an incredible Pace Car event.

So we are seeing how many people would be interested, so we can make a strong case to Daytona.

We are looking for some 1983 Pace Car Editions, and any ORIGINAL DAYTONA 500 PACE CARS you may know about. I have located a 1982 Trans Am Pace Car, but we do not know if it one of the DAYTONA 500 cars yet.

So a lot of research is going into this.

If anyone is interested in this, let me know, as we are bringing together some of the top collectors in the field.

Anyway, I have set a up a TENTATIVE web page for those interested at:

Pace Car Reunion at the 2008 (50th) DAYTONA 500?

Also, I have one of the two Grand Prixs used in the 2000 Daytona 500 (they also made a Pace Car Edition Grand Prix that year). I am looking for a 1983 Daytona 500 Trans Am to use as a weekend driver. I also have a friend interested in getting a 1983 Daytona 500 Edition TA if we get this event going!

No promises, but things are looking promising to do this right now!

Thanks

George Tuominen

A few cars have been found already

1996 Trans Am Daytona 500 Pace Car
1999 Trans Am 30th Anniversary One car sold to the public (found in ND), and GM has the other
2000 Grand Prix I have one, GM has the other

There was an article about a 1983 Trans Am in High Performance Magazine sometime last year, and I think that was one of the original pace cars from that race (I'd love to find that car, as I want a 1983 Pace Car Edition)

We know some cars were sold at Barrett Jackson over the last few years, including cars from 1994, 2002, and 2004. Plus, Daytona has some cars from 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2004, and Jay Leno owns a 2006 car that they gave him after the race this year.

The 68 Camaro Pace Car is at the International Motorsports Hall of fame museum in Talladega, and the 69 Pace Car Camaro made the car show circuit last year.

So, not a bad start considering this idea is only a few weeks old!!

So, anyone see that 1985 Trans Am at any car shows in WA?

That was at Talladega

I believe 1986, maybe 85.

A fan hopped in the Pace Car, and took off from pit road.

Did three laps around the track, even being followed by a state cop on a motorcycle for awhile.

The formed a roadblock, and the guy stopped.

The car was recovered undamaged.

That's NASCAR!!!!!
