This is some great history, very interesting. I hope this thread will also slow down the questions about the meaning of my screen name.

I spent all night staring at these photos. You kept me awake all night wondering about this stuff. One of the red 92 z28's could have been mine. Does anyone know if the heritage cars got there stripes there or at the dealership I see the Iroc-z cars have the stripe package on.

Sexiest cars ever built... and I mean that! If I ever win the lottery, you can rest assured I'll have an awesome collections of thirdgens... No Porsches, no Ferraris, no exotics, just thirdgens and other GM power from the glory days.

Thanks!

My thoughts exactly !

Thanks for sharing the pics . Those just blow my mind to think these were actually "new" cars way back when .

I love the old pics of our Camaros when they were new. I was at Norwood Ohio in 1987 for the USCC show and took some pics of the loader with those IROCs. I have to go look for my pics of that Camaro show. I had my Cortez silver 69 Z/28 RS there and would love to see pics of it that other people have taken.

My brother's IROC is a 1987 Original Yellow t-top car...one question, was it a factory option to have those IROC wheels painted body yellow? Been trying to figure out if some one painted his wheels or if they came that way.

I've offered, a few times, to scan and host the additional pictures David has so all can see them. However, I have not heard from David on it. I'm guessing he doesn't want the pictures sent via any carrier. However, the offer still stands. I have the tools to do it and can host them.

I would love if this could be done, if he's still around.

God this thread is just one of the coolest ever. It's weird, it's like I could go look at a lot full of 2011 Camaros rolling out of the factory and it would be like "Meh, so what." It's like the nostalgia/age is what makes it cool--to see our cars brand new, and even being able to see some of GMs factory quirks like parts constraints seen on cars waiting for final assembly while still out in the lot, quite cool.

Giving this another well deserved bump.

The offer still stands. I've messaged David a few times but have never received a response. I'd be willing to work with David if he has special conditions/requirements, but we haven't even gotten that far.

Maybe some of the members need to convince David. He does still visits and posts on ThirdGen.

So many nice cars....all the red irocs on the trailer is sweet. I just saved all of these photos actually. It's cool seeing into the past, before I was even born. I know where I'm going if time machines ever come around

Sad to think that most are probably screwed now and sitting in a junk yard or being parted out

This is fantastic. It is very cool to see so many "new" 3rd gens from the past. These cars may not have aged well (in terms of rust, etc.) but more than any other car the 3rd gens defined a generation of Camaro/Firebird.

These were great to look at. Amazingly clear and beautiful cars from the factory. So shiny and nice looking with great style. Too bad more than half of these cars are now laying somewhere in a junkyard or rusting away.

I think my 86 bird has a factory set.Not sure. They look nicer than others i've seen in adds. They are made of plastic, and are a three piece style. The third light of corse in the center panel. There are some crackes and such,How would a person fix the finns that are cracked?Love the pics, wish we had some of the 89 Irocs on the line.

I used to live one block from the Texas DPS when they were getting the 91 and 92 B4C's. I took a few pics but need to dig them up.

Also, took some pics of the two 1992 B4C's from the El Paso Police Dept in 1993 and 1994. I need to pull those out.

Very cool pics!!

I have a VIN# on one of those red IROC's on the car carrier. I had taken a closeup shot of the window sticker of the car on the very bottom of the trailer. After years of trying to read it (very poor quality) I took it to a local Ritz camera shop and asked the guy to try and scan it for me and enlarge it.
After a few miniutes he read it off to me! I was ecstatic! I rushed home and dug through my Canadian '87 Camaro build archives and it matched a red 350 IROC. Last eight on the car that is located in the belly of that trailer is HN168532. The only other car I can probably verify is the one right above it as it's a hardtop car, and you don't see many hardtop IROC'S. I'll try and find this one and the others as I am going through and logging in all the '87 Canadian built IROC's and Z28's.

Agreed. I've sent David a few PMs over the past years about this subject when he indicated he had a lot more photos after this batch got posted. Unfortunately, I don't hear back.

I'm guessing the pictures are valuable to David and he may not have an easy time parting them.

It looks like a replacement hatch of some kind. U bolts were there to make removal easier. I would guess it's hatch got damaged and that was there for protection until it could be replaced. Just guessing, however, use to work at a dealership and had cars come in like that when some kind of damage happened. Awesome pics bumpdidy bump bump !!!!!

That's a shame, as the pictures could easily be returned after being scanned in, etc.

This is a great post. I just went thru and read all of the of the posts. I can clear this part of it up. GM was divided into 2 Engineering groups, BOC and CPC. BOC was the Buick ,Oldsmobile and Cadillac group. CPC was Chevrolet /Pontiac /Canada group. The sign was only stating what group within GM the plant supported.
There were assembly plants that would have had a BOC sign and did not build Cadillacs for example. So....hope this helps.

Brought back memories of working in a dealership in the summer of 1987 and watching the brand new Irocs coming rolling off the truck.

I remember one Yellow Iroc coming off the truck being 7 noticeably different shades of yellow. From a light greenish yellow to a darker greenish yellow.

Never would have occurred to me to write down any VINs...

That's the truth about the stock paint on these cars, probably the Van Nuys cars especially. The orange peel might seem minimal compared to some new cars today, but Third Gens were never one solid color, except for black I guess. If you look close, you can usually see that the metal is one shade, the bumpers are another, and the GFX/spoilers yet another. Many cars were that way from the factory at the time though. Today, the paints match nicely but they seem have tons of orange peel in general.

Oh yeah. None of them were great. But this one was just incredible. You could watch the progression of colour from one part to another and one panel to another. Probably didn't help that it was yellow. I just remember near enough everyone from the dealership coming down to the yard for a look. I remember we ended up painting large parts of it to try to make it saleable.

Anyone here own a yellow 87 Iroc they bought from Robertson Motors (The Old Reliable), with original paint?

I know my car is a Van Nuys car, but the orange peel and color issue is something that's plagued my car since day one. It has excessive orange peel and "striping" in the paint. The "striping" is only on the driver's side, but the orange peel and color difference between body parts is very noticeable.

BTW, does anyone know if Canadian cars came from both plants, or just one of them?

Such a shame. The good thing is that this stuff is not really noticable in most lights. I don't have anything on that level since I have no flake in my paint, but I've thought about repainting my car one day just to have it perfect and all matching. That would not represent what a factory/stock 87 IROC-Z28 was anymore though and people like to see them the way that they were. I think it would be destroying a piece of history a little, so I've pretty much decided against it.

Wow, I never noticed that before on your car.

Hate to say it, but almost makes me glad my car had to be resprayed in '92. I don't think I could cope with striping like that in my car.

This is a tricky problem... stick with good originality or go for perfect paint?

I don't have the striping problem that you have, but I do have the problem that every thirdgen seems to have: the plastic bits like the nose, ground effects, side-moulding, spoiler, and bumper are fading/discoloring differently than the steel body. I've even seen some cars have slight warping in the nose piece and GFX over time, even if the car has been beautifully preserved otherwise.

On your IROC it shows up as a different shade of red. On a white car, it shows up as a slight yellow cast. It's unnoticeable in direct sunlight, but was the sun sets you can start to tell. The good thing is the plastic parts are all easy to remove and repaint; the bad thing is it's original paint, so repainting it takes that away...

If it makes you feel any better, GM still can't get this right. I have owned an 05, 08, and now a 2011 Chevy; the black and white ones had orange peel, and the silver one had orange peel along with striping and inconsistent colors from panel to panel.
