Ok what HP is that compressor? That gun calls for 13.8CFM @29PSI.
I am asking because I am looking for a good gun and compressor combo to use once I get started on my car.

Great job on the car. I'm hoping my son and I can do that good on my '83 Daytona T/A. We hope to have it done by the time he is 16.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Got a little more work done over the weekend. I cleaned up my interior heater/flapper box assembly and reinstalled that as well as installed the heater box in the engine bay. Also got my LS1 master cylinder and wet sanded and detailed my brake calipers.
All new weather stripping on heater box
And my new LS1 master. It's quite a bit smaller than the fatory one and extra room is always nice in the engine bay. Plus the reservoir looks 100 times better!

And heres the caliper. No more drip marks, and the corvette letters are now sanded.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Those calipers look great!!! I started to clean mine for paint, but gave up. There was too much grit and grime on them. My plan was to paint them black, put on the stainless "TRANS AM" sticker that I have, then clear over it all. Or something like that... But I decided to wait and get new calipers so I have a heads up on cleaning them. They're cheap enough...
But those look awesome. Its got me wanting to do a color on mine. maybe match my body color. Whatever I decide that to be. haha.

Thanks, and mine were actually brand new so they were nice and easy to prep for paint lol. If you did the stainless trans am on yours that would be awesome looking. Never thought about doing something like that. I like the corvette lettering too though, even though it's a trans am. Doesn't bother me at all!

Man you don't know how jealous I am of you! So is that LS1 master cylinder a direct bolt on?

Yep, bolts right in. Even has the same threading and size as the factory brake lines, however the LT1 master doesn't which is why everyone uses the one from an LS1 car. If nothing else, it makes the engine bay look much cleaner but I heard it helps the brake feel a tad too because of the design.

Yes you could. I've heard from some guys that the lines have to be slightly bent to be in the right spot on the LS1 master as opposed to the stocker but it will "bolt" right in, and looks great!

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Just picked up my 6.0 exhaust manifolds from a freind of mine that just happened to get headers for his 04 2500HD truck, so he let these go for $10!!! Score! Now I have the first piece of the puzzle for the turbo build. Heres a few shots just test fitting them.
I'm starting to get frustrated too because the few parts I need I can't get, and it really gets to ya when you have the cash in hand but the parts are nowhere to be found!!!!!! I'm getting sick of seeing the car on jack stands but the caster camber plates were out of stock, so the front end can't be put on, and I am having a heck of a time getting an LS1 tank so the back end can't go together!! Every time I find one for sale on LS1tech, the seller gives me a price, and then goes "it's too much of a pain to pull out, so I'm not getting it. GRRRRRRR. I am honestly on my 5th try for a tank now so hopefully this one works out. Anyways, enough ranting. Heres a quick shot of the bay how it looks as of today. Still bare!
Hopefully I'll have some exciting updates soon!

Amazing build. After doing a build myself (though not nearly as complete as yours) I have a definet respect for anyone willing to go through with it.
What camber/caster plates are you trying to get? Have you checked junk yards for a tank?

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Just stuffed a bunch of paper towels in the crevices and one by one brought each cylinder to TDC, put rags in the other cylinders, and used WD40 and a very small toothbrush sized wire brush to clean the pistons. Got to go slow though so that if any metal bristles come off the wire brush, you can wipe them off. For the old head gasket material, I just use a box cutter blade and scrape it off.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
I was going to go with the J&M plates. Called and he was out of stock. (said they were at powdercoating and would be back soon.) As for the tank, NO junkyards in my area have one out of an LS1 car, and the one that does doesn't have the sending/ bucket assy with it which costs 400$ at a parts store! I MAY have found one though, and am in the process of sealing the deal, thank god.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Got some parts in the mail today along with a bunch more on the way as we speak. I got the F-body oil pan along with my F-body ported and polished throttle body. Also got the block all cleaned up. I was going to re-spray it black, but honestly, after a clean up, the factory black paint was still nice and glossy, so I left it.
Parts on the way are my LS1 gas tank with the sending unit and bucket assy for my dual walbro 255's as well as some cometic head gaskets and ARP head studs. Gonna be prepared for some BOOST!
Nice shiny throttle body...even got it powdercoated orange!
And heres the motor with the new pan installed. It even has a drain hole for a turbo drilled in it!
Really starting to make progess now. Check back soon for some more!

It's actually an LM7 (5.3). The LQ9 is the 6.0, which go for a little more, but I bought mine as a 100% complete engine with harness for 850$. They can be had for cheaper though ussually now.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
A scraper, kerosene, and a LOT of patience lol. You can scrape most of it off with a metal scraper since it's plyable, and the leftover I just used a rag soaked in kerosene and it did the trick. I'll warn you, it sucks, haha. Well worth it in the end though.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
alright thanks but one more question and anyone can chime in on this if they know
what does the kerosene do? is it some sort of chemical reaction that takes off the factory undercoating, dirt, grime, and whatever else our cars pick up over the years?

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Not so much a chemical reaction, but it's like a heavy duty degreaser...like gasoline. You can clean basically anything with gasoline since it acts as such a good degreaser. Kerosene is the same way but better since it's nowhere near as flamable. It breaks down the undercoat and softens it up so it can be wiped off with a rag.

I can't tell you how much motivation you have given me. My 86 has just started the same process, and I'm doing it like you have done...media blast and then bring it back to paint.
Fantastic project, glad to see another third gen being restored.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Kerosene is actually a very good solvent, which does what the name implies... It dissolves and picks up any oils and contaminants it comes into contact with. It is still very flammable, and gives off vapors, but is much better than gasoline and a whole lot less dangerous.
You could do a lot of the same thing using Simple Green or something like that. That would be even less dangerous, since simple green is diluted with water and is not flammable.
I am terribly impressed with your build out. That car's gonna rock!

ive always used aircraft stripper, use a paint brush and brush it all over what you want stripped.wait for it to bubble then wire brush it off.doesnt take much effort just dont get it on your skin and use ventilated area.

Santa came today!
LS1 F-body gas tank
Some aluminum 1/2 inch fuel line and an assortment of fittings and braided hose. I'm sure I'll need a little more but this will get me started!

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
Now I'm going to be modifying the LS1 fuel bucket/pump assembly for dual walbro 255 pumps. I searched and searched and could NOT find a real in depth how-to for it, so I will show you EXACTLY how I am modifying mine, and what to do if you want to replicate it.
Heres the bucket piece itself. I already cut the lines to the pump and removed it (can't be removed without cutting the lines as far as I know).
Heres the top half of the bucket piece. I chopped off the factory supply line with a dremel since I will be upping it to an -8 AN.
Then I un-clipped the factory plug connector as I am going to use this opening for the -8 AN supply line and where the factory line location was, I will be running the pump wires through. It's MUCH less tight this way.
Heres the underside. You can see where I flattened out the spot where the original plug went through. This will make a nice spot for the nut that secures the -8 AN bulkhead fitting. I also cut the bottom off the spot where the feed line was to allow more space to run wires through.

Heres just a quick pick with the fitting sitting on the bucket to show you how it will be set up. It's going to be more inset into the little hole for max clearence but I need to trim the teflon washer down to fit it into the indent.
Thats all I had time for today. I'll add more to this in the next day or so when I finish it up.

Oh Gawd that roll of fuel line is making me shudder... you should've seen me bending just a couple small sections for my car! It was terrible lol. How do you bend yours? Since sooner or later I'll be re-doing all the lines in my car so I need all the help I can get! haha

Looks good so far! I REALLY want to redo my fuel lines. Probably going to do something similar to what you are doing, except I wont be running dual pumps. Ill most likely just run the alum line and add new fittings.
Are you going to have enough room between that big -8an and the floor pan? I imagine you cant sink that washer too far down or else you'll have issues with the nut for the fitting having clearance. Im sure you checked all this ahead of time and have a plan though haha.

Re: **Project PITA** 86 TA frame up restoration
I got my LS6 (Z06) valvetrain today so that went in. I'm bad at taking pics during the install so I ussually wait until I'm done to take them lol. Anyways, I got a nice low mileage (13k) cam, springs, locks, seals, and pushrods out of an 02 Z06. The cam is installed in the engine, and I put the new springs, seals, and locks onto my 317 heads.
Note to anyone changing valve seals on an LSx, GM uses 2 different colors on the seals. Brown and black. I didn't notice at first and had the first head done, and then I saw the difference. After a little research, I found that the brown are exhaust seals, and the black are intake seals. GM uses a different rubber compound in each to compensate for the hotter exhaust valves. Needless to say, I had to take it apart and start over. Whoops! Consider yourselves warned! Heres some pics of the finished install. Heads are just sitting on motor currently, not bolted down.
And thats about it for now. I will try to work a little more on the fuel pump this weekend and hopefully finish that up

Looks good. Dont be worried about the aluminum line. I used it for my feed and return line on my car and the feed line on my brothers car and it wasnt bad. I didnt even have a bender. I just bent it all by hand.

WOW! This is an awesome build... makes me jealous just looking at it , i had to pull my head out the clouds after reading those 3 pages... im planning on doing a similar build / restore on my 82. after seeing my stepfather spend 4 months this winter doing the body work on his 1993 dodge ramcharger im definitely soda blasting the car. id rather spend all that time putting in extra hours at work for more parts!!! i have alot of the same 4th gen interior, brake, and fuel ideas, lol, but im torn between a 5.3 and a 6.0, i know id make 400+ hp with it but i want it to be driven!!!(also gettin it from LQk)
Keep up the awesome work! thanks for the inspiration!
