A/C restoration help needed
I'll be doing some A/C restoration on this 89 IROC, so what would I need? I searched, but didn't really find anything. Am I on the right track here?:
condenser
accumulator
compressor
lines
Anything else? Thanks guys.

Re: A/C restoration help needed
Don't forget the Orifice tube and PAG oil, ad a couple oz's to each major component during assembly.

Re: A/C restoration help needed
The orifice tube goes to the inlet side of the evaperator core, it is located inside the tube, you can see it with the line disconnected, you use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove and install it. Here is a link to it:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...uestid=3054014
PAG oil is the lubricant used by the ac system:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...randName=Quest
You will need to determine the total amount of oil for the system, I dont remember off hand. If you buy a new compressor it will come with instructions on how to prep it with oil.

The orfice tube goes inside the evaporator, but ins't included in it if I buy it new? Also, is it possible to us 134 since I won't be mixing the 2 together?

No, the orifice tube is a seperate piece, I don't think the evaperator core comes with it. yes you can use R134 no problems, you will also need the r12 to r134 fittings to connect the r134 charge hose.

Yeah I knew about the conversion fittings. I also realize leaks are all too common in AC systems, so what do I need to use on fittings? Teflon tape? Also aren't there some crimped fittings that I'll need a special crimper for?

You might also check into buying a upgraded condenser. I cannot remember the exact name of it,but it is a different design and is more efficient. Maybe someone can chime in and give you a proper description.

Awesome. So what size should I get? I know A/C is hard to think of right now.

Re: A/C restoration help needed
The condenser should be upgraded to a larger size or the AC will not cool with r134 while idling. While moving, you'll be ok, but at a stop, if you have ttops and the sun is shining, the cooling capability will be minimal. Newer cars can cool with r134 because they use a different condenser. Also, be sure to do some homework on this before playing with parts. The dryer needs to be just that, dry. Once you start connecting things, the dryer/evaporator is open and getting contaminated with the outside air. Look into this before you start. I've looked into getting a new R4 compressor, evaporator and orifice tube. The good part is a AC Delco evaporator is about $20 and an AC Delco orifice tub was about $2. The compressor was unfortunately about $220. I found local AC shops willing to do the repairs for about $150 if I supplied the R12. I plan on keeping R12 in my system so I didn't need the condenser. I think the condenser costs about $180, but I could be wrong.

Yeah that parallel flow condenser looks awesome!
What do you think of this guys advice?:

Seems pretty solid yeah? Also, the any crimp fittings? What tool would I need?

If you buy new lines they will already be crimped. Otherwise, you could buy something like this:

Buy the lines, use the correct O-rings (per your refrigerant), and hook them up, nothing to it. Unless your doing something custom, I dont see why you'd have to crimp anything.
Also your conversion fittings will have a rubber seal in them, no need for any tape or anything. Be sure the schrader valve is tight before installing them, as its a common source of refrigerant leakage.

Yeah I'd love if someone could give me an idea of what size condenser to buy. I'm assuming the bigger the better correct?

Since ours is 26 11/16 X 15 3/4, this condenser would be our best bet.

Sure did, and since it's in great shape I'd like to have everything factory working. AC, cruise, exhaust..........Drove 7 hours in that blizzard on unplowed highways at 30 mph both ways.

I think the decals were just never replaced after paint? I could be wrong though. Yeah, I had to jump on this deal. It's currently taking a back seat though to my other Camaros T56 install. I'm getting so burned out on that so I hope to be wrenching on the 89 soon. Where are you from anyway?

How's your AC system? I'd love to get a look at hose routing and connections so I'll have a better idea of what I'm doing.

Re: A/C restoration help needed
so output of the compressor goes to the condenser, output of the condenser goes to the evaporator? Where might I be able to find adapters for the parallel flow condenser cause I doubt I'll be able to use stock lines?

Re: A/C restoration help needed
im talking with a guy now about either making adapters for using our stock lines, or having new hoses made all together.
im trying to get him to make a complete ac package for our cars using the new parallel condenser.
ill update you when i get more info

Re: A/C restoration help needed
That would be badass! jenses73110 sold me his AC system components so I hope to get the system up and working before march. T56 swap is still taking up my time on the other camaro. What kind of adapters would we need if we didn't have custom hoses? Also the parallel condenser connection are at the top and bottom as opposed to the stock condensers connections being routed to the upper middle area.

Re: A/C restoration help needed
im more interested in the adapters.
see the tubes on the stock condenser. make those tubes. one side connects normaly where the old lines go. and the other end would have a flare end and nut to connect to the condenser. so basicly it would look the same.
prob will hear back on monday.

he didnt have the size condenser that we wanted in stock, and didnt want to order them. It was a guaranteed sale..... whatever i guess. im ordering the condenser from ackits and having someone local fab the connectors for me. ill take both old and new condensers with me, that way there will be no question on the measurements, size, or bends.

Re: A/C restoration help needed
Considering that all 1989 - 1992 Chevy V8's used virtually the same parts, you might consider going to a junkyard and getting the parts off of a salvaged car... The tubes are different from the compressor to the condenser to the evaporator but typically they are all similar, obviously you would be best off to find an F-body, but any one will work.
Take parts of of one car and install onto your car... it would obviously answer most questions.. I would think for about $100 (or less) you could get everything you need... I helped a friend pull off a whole serp system including the whole serp setup including the evaporator. We did not grab the condenser... he only paid $100 for everything...
I would take the parts then to to an AC place to have them tested, they should be able to do a pressure test on the parts, and see if the compressor is good... The most common places for the AC to leak is the Compressor, typically it comes out of the front seal, and the condenser coil...

You're gonna have to either way because the inlet/outlet is wider than the stock condenser. We're also not sure of the connections and how they match up to stock, as well as there being any adapters.
