Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
Yo peeps
usual weekly ebay scan for camaro/ firebird items came across this picture of what the lister says is a camaro pace-car.
Looks like quite a modified camaro - you'll notice the widened arches and one piece front clip/fenders - almost a 3rd/ 4th gen hybrid
Can anyone shed any light on this? Really more of a firebird guy but this caught my eye -

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
All you need to know is printed on the door... It's a PPG pace car. Note it says Indy Car World Series just below that. PPG pace cars in general included a lot of concept cars and cars modified to look different. One of them that stands out is the car from the Wraith was a PPG pace car. GM probably didn't have anything to do with it.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
thanks - yeah figured it was custom
Would be cool to find out the date of that pic - as per the above, clearly some LT1 DNA in that front clip - maybe GM liked what they saw here?
anyway, thanks for clearing the legitimacy of that up

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
Without doing any research on the car itself, I would say it's an early car. Look at the CFI hood they used. If it was based on a newer car, I doubt they would have gone backwards to the 82-83 hood.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
That picture looks almost identical to the Camaro GTZ concept from the mid 80s (which was sold as part of the GM Heritage Barrett Jackson auction):
http://www.supercars.net/cars/4354.html
Google "camaro gtz" and you'll get some good info.
I actually saw the GTZ at a Chevy/Vette fest in Chicago back in the day. Great looking car in person and a nice evolution of the 3rd gen styling.
The pace car picture is a bit confusing as the yellow GTZ is a one-off -- the only one ever built as far as I know. I doubt it ever hit the track.
The pace car in the photo certainly has very similar elements but looks to be a crude mock up of the GTZ. The hood is completely different (and doesn't line up with the front fascia at all) and the rockers aren't the same as the actual GTZ concept. Maybe the pace car picture is an early version of the GTZ that was later refined? No question the pace car above and the GTZ are very similar....

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
PPG did many concept car pace cars back in the 80's, they usually were ahead on the design curve and made things very futuristic, and in many cases those ideas actually were implemented into later production cars. Little do people know that many concept cars were not made by GM, even the Pontiac Banchee from the 80's was made by C&C, not GM.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
The more I look at that car, the more it looks like a 4th gen. It appears that GM took just about everything from that car and put it on the 4th gen, changed it very little, the concave door shape, the headlights, the lack of fender flairs, the rear spoiler scream 4th Gen. This car had more influence on the 4th Gen design than any other concept I have seen up to date. Even the 1992 Camaro concept in post 7...
One thing that strikes me is the car is a silver in the first post, and definitely red in the ebay ad.
Also the wheels have been changed, they appear to be the Firebird 16" "GTA" style wheels.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
interesting thoughts guys
the more I look at the car (esp. the ebay pics) the more I think this can't be from the early 80's.
The GTA rims, the more pronounced coke bottle shape of the car, rear smoothed bumper and the 4th gen doors -
it's like a crystal ball into late 80s, 90s less angular styling...

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
It was supposed to be a DOHC V6 engine with a 5 speed. The doors opened like a Lamborghini and it was going to be made to appeal to the West Coast folks back then.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
^^I actually bought a 2011 Camaro calendar a week ago with that 1989 California IROC-Z concept inside. If you think the exterior looks strange, then you should take a look at the interior, drivers side specifically. Has a sort of 'cockpit' vibe, and an equally strange dash, which I like. Image is tiny though.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
I like how the door handles are "sunken" in even though it's a wide body.
But the gas cap, tail lights, and bumpers kill it. Someone call Marty mcFly and get this thing outta here.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
To bring clarity to the discussion I am going to post a picture from the Book I wrote on Norwood. Here are the two silver examples. The car nearest to the camera has mostly third generation styling with design concepts planned for later introduction. The design on the far end is a nod to future 4th generation styling. There were multiples produced in contrast to the claims made on EBay with respect to the maroon car.
This display was in plant at Norwood just outside the paintshop.

Re: Unusual Camaro - alleged pace-car
Although I have read several people say "GTA" Wheels... Those are not GTA rims.. They are similar but different enough to say no, not the Factory wheel.
