UL5 radio delete in 1988

I just picked up a fairly stripped 1988 SC with the UL5 "option". This car has the factory antenna on the fender - identical placement and equipment as my brother's 1991. So, either the fender has been replaced or the car left the factory with the antenna (I don't know how to verify either scenario). If ALL 1988 UL5 cars left the factory without the antenna, then I probably have a car that was hit.

It was probably there on all of them. I remember buying a 1990 Chevy Cavalier new and it was the VL model with radio delete yet the car had an antenna and all 4 speakers plus all wiring was there for a radio install.

My 85 z28 came with UL5 and has the antenna but has the rear quater sail panels in th eback seat with no foam covers where the rear speakers went. Those sail panels are a 1 piece plastic.

Re: UL5 radio delete in 1988

I'm surprised that speakers or an antenns would be included with radio delete because assembing cars is all about saving cost. Wiring, yes because there's less cost in using the same harness for all. But an antenna costs GM $2.00 and a plastic plug costs $0.02.

My 87 IROC was a UL5 car and came with an antenna & lead. Made it very easy to install the radio - harness was there too.

It's easier on the manufacturing process to have all fenders stamped with the antenna cutout. The cost of the antenna was probably less than having multiple fender stamps.
