Re: For those who part cars?

I have parted out 1 car for myself and helped a friend part out 2. for an 84 base firebird we took everything but the V6 and rear axle, for a 82 T/A hard top and a 86 mustang both were stripped down to every nut and bolt, engine axle crossmember dash you name it. Nothing left but a rusty shell as i only part cars that are rusty beyond the point of no return

Re: For those who part cars?

In the past decade I have parted out like 50 cars or so ALL have been 1982-1984 "Birds".Most of the time,I leave windshield washer/coolant Resv bottles,A/C,emissions junk, drum brake rears,Doors, rear hatch.front and rear bumper impact supports (If they aren't the aluminum versions) lol so that way I get more at the metal scale when they get crushed and leaves more room in my storage for more valuable parts.

And sad to say most of the cars that I have parted out,Had been Wrecked,Neglected/abandoned for YEARS and have had a TON of body damage and or SERIOUS rust which would make them money pits to restore back to original.A FACT that some on here DON'T clearly understand

Re: For those who part cars?

If a car is parted because it is beyond repair, that's OK. It helps out guys like me who are trying to find parts for our projects. But we have all seen countless times, cars that are in decent shape that get parted out.
Here is one listed in the for sale section:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cama...e-me-part.html
Guys don't get any bites on a sale and decide to part out a car. This one is a project, but there have been threats on here of parting out low mileage, pristine cars. There was a low mile GTA a few months ago. It was eventually sold whole, but it would have been a shame if it got parted.

Re: For those who part cars?

yeah its sick at the amount of parted 3rdgens on this site. even worse is when they are nicer than my own daily driver 3rdgens...i could name a handfull of members on here who never sieze to amaze me at what they are parting out, but i wont. i parted my buddys totaled 87 sc, and rotted out 87 iroc. nothing but a shell remained on both. thats why i have litterally 2 cars stuffed under my house and in the garage....(parts)

Re: For those who part cars?

Usually all I have left is just the shell, plastic dash panel and if it's a V6 then if it doesn't sell right away I leave those in there. I haven't had one where the doors were bad off yet but if they were rusted really bad then I would just leave them on the shell for more cash at the scrap yard.

I actually bought an 87 IROC that was missing the fenders, hood and bumper and the rear end was sold to someone else. Got it home and removed the 350 and trans, guy came and picked up the rear end. I sold the doors, trans, TPI system, hatch and interior pieces. After scrapping the rest I made $150 and kept the 350 motor, less intake

It all depends on demand and how much you are willing to put up with having people calling all the time. I typically won't hold onto anything for anybody (there are few exceptions). That way I'm not waiting forever on someone trying to "get the money together". Also full payment on delivery. Don't have the money you don't take home the part. I have excepted deposits on some items due to price but there's also a time limit for final payment that we both have agreed upon.

It sounds crappy but you have to protect yourself. You see local posts all the time "so-n-so gave me half and I gave them the part and now they wont pay the rest" or "Hey so-n-so when are you going to pay me for that part you want, it's been over X weeks now"

Re: For those who part cars?

I voted but it didn't specify what type of cars were being parted. I have parted around 30 cars (all 1st, 2nd gen or 64-71 Mustangs). None of them were third gens as the parts for them are dirt cheap. For example, a ram air system for an 82-84 TA won't sell for more than $200. I used to get $1000 to $1500 for a Mach 1 RA system, ditto for a 70 TA. Most of this was about 10 years ago when you could still buy those cars in rusty shape for less than 3k. You would end up with at least 6K in parts. Plus I saved all the shells and papers for them, then sold them when the cars went way up in price. So really, nothing went to the crusher.
Now third gens are another story, A friend of mine gave one to me where he had taken off the six parts that everyone wants. I tried selling the remaining parts and ended up spending more in postage than I was getting for the parts. So I would say for third gens, you can easily sell the TPI, ILE and WS6 parts plus nice dashes and a 5 speed set up. After that, you get peanuts for the parts. So why bother?

Seems like there is only a few hundred in profit from parting a 3rd gen.

Re: For those who part cars?

exactly, thats why i wonder why people STILL do it . i think enough have already been parted that (exagerated) that everyone has the parts they need now. some say that parting 1 3rdgen helps 10 3rdgens. when realy it seems parting 10 thirdgens may help 1....

Yeah, of course. If a car suffers from severe damage or rust and is too far gone that's one thing. But like you said, I see lots of cars that won't sell at the price the seller wants, so they just part them. Or......if someone found a car for cheap, they just part them.

I see a few cars right here, every year, that really should be saved rather than parted and junked.

I have personally never parted a car just to part it out for profit. I have bought wrecks, and used the parts I needed for my projects and sold the remaining parts to offset the purchase price.

I think there is money in doing it, but its not something your gonna get rich on. I have sold pretty close to $800 worth off this after getting the parts I needed. I have only bought accident damaged cars to this point, but does suck that in a lot of cases the cars are worth more in parts than whole.

Re: For those who part cars?

Sometimes a car can get parted because of a title problem despite it's condition,
I just picked up an 86 T/A that is really clean underneath but the title had a "child support lien" on it. Bought it anyway because i could make some money parting it and scraping it without the title. I called the DMV the next monday and they said there was no problem with that, so i will gladly put some extra money into freshening up the interior and selling it as a whole saving this one from the crusher.
A tow truck driver i knew was going to scrap an 89 firebird because of a title problem (don't know what exactly) and he let me take all the parts i wanted for free first.

Re: For those who part cars?

In the 20+years that I have been parting 3rd gens, I can honestly say that the percentage of whats left really depends on the car.An early model v6 plain jane will have alot more parts left on it then any later model V8. I have junked cars that were probably 80% still intact down to cars that were basically shells..
