I had an stripped down 89 RS with a v6 and 5 speed back in 1994 that didnt have a rear defroster. Probably not all that rare to see them without the rear defroster.

Why would someone want that option? and my car is power everything and a automatic just doesn't make much sense not to have add it

Re: how rare is this option
I would say that our cars came with no rear defroster standard. The rear defroster was most likely an option or included with an options group. People that bought our cars new probably didnt care about having the rear defroster. They probably wanted a camaro or firebird but didnt have the money to buy a nice one so they bought or ordered a low optioned car so they could have a thirdgen. Scott can probably clear this up some more

that may be but to skip just that one option I can understand if it was a 5 speed with non power locks and windows but to get skip a 150 at most option is mind boggling to me.

Re: how rare is this option
The rear window defroster was an option. Many people didn't think they needed the rear defroster so they didn't get it. It was fairly inexpensive so the cost was not the issue as much as people just didn't think they needed it.

Re: how rare is this option
Relatively rare....
FOR A REASON.
Reason being, nobody wanted to buy A NEW CAR without that. WOULD YOU? Nobody else would either.
"Rare" doesn't automatically mean "desirable", or even, "somebody besides you cares".

Re: how rare is this option
I've seen 3rd camaros without a/c, so not having rear defroster isn't surprising. Its just the way they sold those early 3rd gens, you could order each option as you choose. To me less is more, I like the plain jane sport coupes the best.

Re: how rare is this option
I have seen well-optioned third gens in the past without rear defrost. They are always in southern states. Ordering a car up here without rear defrost would've been suicide for the dealer stuck with it.
Reminds me of a new 2002 Z28 that was still for sale in 2004 on eBay. Car was white with tan leather...had t-tops...chrome wheels...even the $1,300 optional ground effects package. Sounds like a nice car, right??
Whoever ordered it screwed up and forgot to add the preferred equipment group with, oh, power windows, locks, mirrors, drivers seat and cruise Crank windows and leather seats....poor dealer...

My otherwise well optioned '91 T/A doesn't have a rear defroster either...I've seen plenty of base cars that didn't have it, but few Z28/IROC/TA/GTA's that didn't.

I would think that though they are around but you dont see to many in my area (Sourthen Nevada) that it is probably a more regional option since most cars are ordered by the dealer, not the consumer.

Warmer areas of the country don't need rear defrost like the colder northern states do.

From 1982-1992 63.5% of all Camaros and Firebirds had the rear defrost option... Therefore 36.5% did not have the rear defrost...

Re: how rare is this option
Really when you consider that southern states really do not need a rear defrost, IE from Southern Cal thru Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, AR, LA, FL, GA, etc. is probably 1/3 the population it fits about right... I hardly ever use my rear defrost when I drive my car... It is only on an unusual day that I get caught in the rain... Never had to use it on my convertible, oh wait, my convertible has a plastic window.
Probably the most striking thing I found with those numbers is more Camaros (proportionally) had the rear defrost option than Firebirds. Camaros had a 63.76% and Firebirds had 63.34%... Whereas exactly 89% of Camaros and 93.59% Firebirds had Air Conditioning... Typically more Firebirds had options than Camaros, 4 Wheel disc brakes as another example... Oddities however abound, less Firebirds had CD players (by total and proportion), and less Cassette players... I suppose many people did replace the Factory unit with an aftermarket, but that is not the purpose of this thread.

Its funny that my 85 and 87 T/As bought new and loaded up that neither had
rear defrost. My 87 didn't have A/C either (what a mistake!).
Both bought new in NY.
BUT..........My 84 Z-28 is loaded also and HAS the rear defrost and it was bought
new in North Carolina!
NY passed a law a few years back that rear defrost is required in all new cars.

My 92 RS is loaded besides power mirrors, 3.1 Auto, even has the hatch cover, but no rear defrost. My 87 TA has is, loaded besides power mirrors. I had a loaded and I mean loaded 95 Mustang that was sold new in FL and it did not have rear defrost.

I call BS on the regional thing ,My '82 T/A has LU5,WS6,PW,Cruise but no rear defrost and it was sold new in Iowa.
Many of the 82-84 cars I have parted out from AR,OK,KS,TX ALL had rear defrost except for one '82 T/A LU5 I stripped out last fall in Dallas,I sold that non-defrost hatch for $600 to a Knight Rider guy in France cause KITT never had rear defrost either

Re: how rare is this option
I've picked over dozens of southern thirdgens here in FL over the last 15 years; i've seen just as many with as without. A smart consumer would have bought it, down here all it takes to fog that huge glass is enough humidity and the glass to get cold from running the a/c, or from sitting outside on a mild damp night. I hated not having it on two of my previous cars. Just my .02. My '84 has it, thank goodness.

Re: how rare is this option
my 83 T/A had pw but man locks, tilt, no cruz, 5 spd and heated glass. my 89 FORMULA is pretty loaded but no heated glass. i'v thought about adding it being I have the purple power wire, switch, and getting a glass is no biggie and its pretty much plug and play.
