1989 G92- 5 speed

Is the 5 speed in a G92 optioned car considered an overdrive trans or were they geared differently ? Mine doesn't feel like an overdrive.

5th gear on your MK6 T5 is .73. The more common M39 T5 got a .63 ratio 5th gear. So it's an overdrive, but a bit steeper than some other T5s.

Thank's Charlie,

It must be the 3.45 rear end that makes it feel like it isn't much higher of a 5th gear.

I BELIEVE so. I know the 1LE got steeper gears in the transmission than the standard T5's.

Re: 1989 G92- 5 speed

.73 is LESS "steep" than the grocery-cart .63, which is such a HUGE step from 4th, that it feels like there needs to be another gear in between. I know, because I accidentally stuck a .63 in some one of the dozens of T-5s I sent through before I got wise and threw that piece of trash in the garbage where it belongs; I COULD NOT WAIT to get it out of there and put a .73 back in. I actually pulled the trans WHILE IT STILL WORKED!!!! and changed the gears before I tore it up again, it was SO unbearable... couldn't have been more than a few days that it was in there. What a turd.

Re: 1989 G92- 5 speed

What I feel driving my 89 is a fifth gear that just keeps pulling.... and no big spread like an overdrive would have.

The old 1992 Camaro corral Magazine I posted kept mentioning 5 speed overdrive, which I guess you can call it that if the gearing is different .... but the way the G92 is geared 5th just seams like the next gear up, hence the question.

Of course in 1992 4 speeds were still in recent memory.... a 5 speed was a big deal.
