IROC-Z Strut/shock info

Hello guys!
I have a 1986 iroc-z with g92 option. I also have a 1990 base iroc-z (both LB9 stock cars). I am going to swap the "G92" parts from the 86 to the 90. The 90 doesent have rear disc (86 does) but has g80 posi, 90 didnt have the "wonder bar" 86 did. They share the same front sway bar but the 86's rear sway bar is larger. My question is, i see the 86 has yellow delco/bilstein rear shocks and the 90 has ordinary black one's in the rear. Do both iroc's share the same front struts or does the 86 have better struts??

Thanks

Re: IROC-Z Strut/shock info

After all these years the Struts & Shocks are shot and not worth the effort.

Yes that would be true but the 86 didnt drive much in its life time and the suspension is still in great shape. So im going to swap them on for now, but im wondering if the front ones are the same. They seem stiffer on the 86.

Re: IROC-Z Strut/shock info

The '90 should have a wonderbar. The fact that it doesn't might be why it seems stiffer on the '86. The '86 and '90 should have a 1.3" front stabilizer bar and a .9" rear.

1990 Suspension
Shocks -
type - Direct, Double Acting, Hydraulic(a)
piston diameter - 54mm front, 25mm rear
rod diameter - 25mm front, 13.49mm rear
(a)=Delco Bilstein on rear for IROC-Z

Front Stabilizer bar -
Steel 34mm (1.3") Base IROC-Z;
Steel 36mm (1.4") 16" tire IROC-Z

1986 Suspension -
Shocks -
type - Direct, Double Acting, Hydraulic(a)
piston diameter - 54mm front, 25mm rear
rod diameter - 25mm front, 13.49mm rear
(a)=Delco Bilstein on rear for IROC-Z

Front Stabilizer bar -
Steel 34mm (1.3") Z28;
Steel 32mm (1.3) IROC-Z

Re: IROC-Z Strut/shock info

OK so they should have the same front struts! So the 90 should have rear bilstein and a wonder bar?. It is a base iroc though with 15inch wheels and i think it has G80 posi only because it was stantard in 1990 for the iroc-z. Whats wierd is im the 3rd owner and its a documented car from its first oil change at the dealer and is all original..

I'm probably stating the obvious, but I think the '90 not having RPO B4Z might the reason for the differences between the two suspensions and their components.

No. This has nothing to do with it. The RPO B4Z wasn't used from 1988-1990. All IROC-Zs came with the wonder bar. The reason for the different suspensions is because Chevrolet downsized the model lineup in 1988 from Sport Coupe, LT and Z28 to just a Sport Coupe and Z28. All Z28s now had the IROC-Z appearance, but could be had without all of the options required for the IROC-Z in previous years. In 1987, the IROC-Z package was built on top of the Z28, so it was an upgrade. By 1988-1990, the IROC-Z *WAS* the Z28, and vice versa.

Re: IROC-Z Strut/shock info

I don't know much about the Camaros but I do know that on birds in 89 the WS6 struts were improved a little bit from the 88 and older WS6 struts.

Re: IROC-Z Strut/shock info

For a moment, I thought your 86 might be an old Player's car ... the 86 Camaro's would have had all the good stuff. Rear shocks were stock, but front struts were different. Your car may have had parts swapped from a donor.

I have all the VIN's from the players cars and can verify if needed.

Cheers!
Mark.

Re: IROC-Z Strut/shock info

Don't swap the axles. Those old cast iron calipered rear discs are a downgrade from a properly adjusted rear drum setup.
