Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
Okay, I'm trying to start something here. I brought this up in the current COTM thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/auto...tm-voting.html and ran it past IROCZTWENTYGR8
I'd like to assemble about 10-20, low miles, 95% or better, all original cars that we can use to reference with photos, for current and future restorers. Just factory originals.
I guess I'll take the lead here for now, until we can get this all figured out.
If anyone wants to join in and help, that'd be great. This is kind of a work in progress, so any suggestions are welcomed.
For starters, this month's COTM has several cars which I think automatically qualify.
They are:
-ev305tpi's '87 IROC-Z
-Scottmoyer's '87 IROC-Z
-drjewalton's '84 Z/28
-Russlecronk's, '87 IROC-Z
-and my own '89 IROC-Z.
We need some Firebirds as well.
If the owners don't want to be on this list or anyone feels that one of these shouldn't be on here, let me know.
If you want to be part of this, post a pic of your car, so I can remember which car goes with which member. I'm pretty familiar with most of low miles, originals here, but I need to be reminded on who goes with which car. That way, we can know who to contact, if the need arises for a specific photo.
What do you have to do, if your car is one of the reference cars? If it comes up, maybe post a picture or two of a specific detail. For example, what did the factory muffler hangers look like? Or, what underhood decals were there? How did the shifter ball stitching look? Stuff like that.
For now, I guess this thread can serve as a depository of sorts, for a dozen or two cars we can use as reference.

When I see an original 3rd gen in good shape come up on ebay or elsewhere, I save the photos if they are any good. I can send them to you if you like, some of the files are fairly large.

I think this is a great idea. Chazman you might get with a mod in this section and see if a sticky could be approved to put in, and then members with amazing examples as you have listed could post their pics, and info about the cars.

I started taking pics of things with my car as I dismantle it. When I needed to lube the tach cable assembly, I removed the instrument cluster and took many photos of it. When the dash pad was removed for the heater core, I took pics of all stickers, etc. I removed the door panel to tighten the upper black arm rest and I took pics of the interior door panel, the window guide felts, etc. There are thousands of pics that could be taken of a car and I don't think I have enough drive space to get them all!

Hey, we've got sticky status!
I hope this thread turns into something good. We've got enough benchmark cars here.

Here's a 1982 V-6 car for reference. LC1 engine, auto tranny.
1982 Firebird base model, 24k
I have different rims on it now, but still have the original wheel covers. The battery, exhaust and tires have been replaced, but everything else is basically untouched.

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
Hi Chazman,
Both of my cars will be good for this.
1982 Pontiac Trans AM WS7, This is a very highly optioned t-top car, with 24K actual miles. I am the second owner, and have all of the paperwork, including the original 1982 buyer's agreement. The car is original down to the tires. The only non-OEM parts are the upper radiator hose, the right hand A.I.R manifold, and the battery. The car has been PHS documented.
1986 Pontiac Trans AM WS6. This is a highly optioned t-top car with 30K actual miles. I am the second owner on this one also. It has the PHS documentation, and all the original paperwork. The blue part has been resprayed one time, and the decals replaced with Phoenix Graphics OE replacements. The car is all stock and original except for repairs that have been necessary to keep the car running and safe.
I have original dealer order manuals for 1982 and 1986. I also have the dealer service manuals for both years, as well as brochures and other model/year specific memorabilia.
If you are interested, let me know.

For your first assignment, take pics of your pedal pads. We've got a thread going on that. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...edal-pads.html

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
Okay, this thread is evolving into something bigger now. I've been talking to JT and we want to a create a monthly?? (or bi-monthly) feature car. Cars must be mint and original. It will also appear on the front page of the site. It'll be kind of a big deal.
So, essentially, we need people to take pics of their cars, write a little story about it and it's history, and we can take it from there.
Let me know who's interested by posting something in this thread like, "yes I'm interested" or PM me. We've got some really superb factory cars on this site. Let's get rolling on this and show them off!
This won't be voted on like COTM, the mint, stock cars will be self evident.

I'm not sure if I'd call my car 'mint' but it is at least 95% original. 1985 Trans Am WS6, everything works, totally unmolested. It has 46,000 miles...and even the stock tires on the front. I'd be willing to help out if you'd like.

Here's my 1984 Z-28 H.O. with at the time 11,525 Original miles. Odometer now reads 14,840. I put a little over 3000 miles in a year and a half. Car still sported original Eagle GT tires when purchased.

Chazman,
My 89 Iroc Camaro will be on a lift Saturday or Sunday, I can take all the pics you want. Im Interested in your feature car. This is the car that has under 50 miles, 44 to be exact, and it is obvious. Let me know what pictures you would like posted, still missing correct wheels and emblems, otherwise it's unbelievable. The story is pretty cool too if you recall the 38 mile IROC thread. I have some good pictures already, but if someone is looking for something specific, let me know.

Hi,
I just got my dream car and someone told me about this thread. So here is my 86 trans am with 7222 miles. It's a time machine! 305 4-bbl auto. Gray interior. Let me know if you need any assistance cause I'm kind of a data geek. :-)

Hey Chazman,
I'd love to be a part of this! I went out for a fall ride today to get some new pics of the white IROC, broke 11k miles and loved every tick of the odometer throughout the ride
PS - I have a line on two other cars with lower mileage than this one that i'm hoping to buy one of in the coming weeks, i'll keep you posted!

A couple more:
Wheels and tires have never been off. Lug nuts are not marked up:
This car was a demo (executive car) when new, sold with 3810 miles on it. Still has the original oil change sticker on the door jamb!
Nice hood gap

Your window sticker is more than mine. I haven't seen that yet on a coupe, only the convertible. The only difference in options is the black door edge guards for $15. I have seen cars with a price of $50 less because of the split rear seat, and equal price with exactly the same options, but your car takes the option list to a new level!!

You know what's funny, after I uploaded the pics last night, I opened up your PM to see the pic of your window sticker and ran through the options on both until I saw that was the only difference... too funny!!! I ended up pulling the door edge guards and rear window louvers off as a personal preference as I could reinstall both in a matter of a few minutes.

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
I'm new to the forum. Perhaps my car is one of the kind you are looking for?
1987 Trans Am t-top, LB9/700R4/LSD, rear drum brakes, factory exhaust, factory wheels, factory stereo, overhead console w/ flashlight, etc. I believe the car is bone stock and (with the exception of fluids, tires, battery, belts and hoses) all original. As far as I can tell the car has no mods or any customizing. The only thing on the car I'm not sure about are the little "mud flaps" that say "Trans Am" behind all four wheels. Someone suggested they may have been a dealer option? It's undergone no restoration. As of this post the mileage is 66,000. Let me know if the car can be of any help.

Grabbed some new Picts of my 86 T/A added 145 miles to her... I just have to enjoy her before the season ends. She is 100 % original... On
Y things that are not are the tune up parts, air filter, spark plugs etc. but they are all OEM...other then that even the air in the tires is from 1986.

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
Here are a few of my '92. Although not low miles, it is about 90-95% original, with almost all it's original hoses. I am the second owner, purchased 2/98 with 38K miles, older lady owned, no one had sat in the back seat, etc. It's had one respray in 2004 due to the gfx fading. It's won a 3rd place and two 2nd places in the stock/original class at STARS. It was my daily driver from 1998-2004, so it does have a bit over 100K now. The only things that have been replaced are the alternator, one headlight motor, and the front floor mats, other than maintenance items. I have owned it for almost 16 years and have never seen it's twin in person, including 3 years at STARS, so although not rare, it's no cookie cutter car either. That is one of the most common comment about my car at shows is that people haven't seen one like it (3rd gen), in that condition in years. Thanks for looking at my car.

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
I want to thank whoever started this thread. I like looking at modded 3rd gens, but have always been a stock/original kind of guy. To me it is much harder keeping one stock than it is throwing a bunch of chrome and aftermarket stuff on it. And, like it is becoming now, after so many years you hardly ever see these type cars stock. Thanks again!

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
Hey Chazman,
Are there any pics that I should take of the 82 TA before changing out the OE hoses, belts, and such? Right now the original Goodyear Eagle GT's are still on the car, but they won't be on there much longer. The dryrot is getting scary.
The hoses and belts are all OE with the exception of the upper radiator hose which failed two years ago.
The brakes are a little spongy, so we are going through that system also. This is a WS7 car with the aluminum drums on the rear.
I think that the thermostat is stuck open, as the car never gets up to operating temp unless it is a hot day and the car is driven a few miles or so. So the car is at a point where these items are going to have to be changed to keep it operational and safe.
How much of this stuff should be documented before it is disturbed and no longer original?
The mileage is currently at 24,400.
The bad part is that this car was Z-Barted when new, so most of the undercarriage is covered with a thick layer of black goo.

Re: Seeking some low miles, all original, "Reference Cars".
I don't get on here very much but I will add mine. The car is 100% original. I still have the production line battery and oil filter somewhere in the garage. I thought I had lost the battery about 15 years ago but found it again out in the shed a few years ago. When I bought the car I also bought another set of tires and wheels. I haven't driven it enough to replace the tires. I have all the documentation for the car. I did have to replace the serpentine belt but I kept the original. Somewhere I have the front license plate bracket but never installed it even though my state requires a front plate.
Here are few shots I have on my computer. Maybe this summer I will try to photograph everything and do some documentation.
Replacement oil filter I bought back in '88. The production line filter I have was painted over when the block was painted at the factory.
Spare tires and wheels
