Re: New Purchase! 1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona Pace Car
There are currently stainless steel reproduction caps currently being finalised here in the UK, i am proud to have the prototype set on my KITT replica and the fit and finish are just superb. Ive been road testing them for the creator with them bolting to the actual lug nuts and they have never moved an inch, i love them ! Please note my set have smaller holes and dont have the arrowhead embossed with them being the test caps. the production ones are exactly as the OEM ones in appearance.
And these are the production caps which are nearly completed and will be rolling out in the new year

Awesome car man. These Daytonas are getting so hard to find now. About your bowling ball cap situation though....

one of my turbo fin/cast wheels
I guarantee you, if he was able to reproduce the covers for this variant, he'd have quite a few '83 Pace Car owners looking to get a set!
Heard the originals were notorious falling off the wheels... same thing happened with the originals for this car.

Those are exactly the caps I was talking about. I saw them on a knight rider message board but couldn't remember which one. They don't attach to the rim but bolt directly to the lug nuts. My buddy in Mexico has 2 sets. I'll find out how much he paid.

Re: New Purchase! 1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona Pace Car
You get a fitting kit with the caps, new lug nuts and 3 bolts. You simply offer the cap up to the wheel making sure its lined up with the bolts and you bolt the cap to the lug nuts with the provided allen bolts and special allen tool, its that simple. and ive had these on my car now for 3 months and they are on there solid

Ah that is a shame then. I thought they were the same bowling ball caps but it was just the aero rim that was different giving it the totally closed look. thats a shame

Re: New Purchase! 1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona Pace Car
Hope so ive had repro caps on my car over the years and ive lost a couple here and there. Then i got some OEM ones and still cable tied them around the rims because they fall off. I honestly believe these are the solution. They wouldnt of been cost effective for GM to make like this though obviously.

There are plenty of repros available and i have to tell you some of them are garbage, wafer thin fibreglass, two separate pieces bonded together that separate, uneven back surface so they dont even sit on the rim flush ! ive seen them all.

There is yet hope, I think...

There's no website for them yet until they are ready for release, price to be confirmed too. There will be a thread going up about them in the new year though when they are ready.

Not a cheap part but my buddy swears up and down that it was worth it to him. He junked his GM caps for these repos and couldn't be happier. He's down for 2 sets of the production caps when they are ready next year. He's getting them from a guy out of Ft Worth or Dallas.

Re: New Purchase! 1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona Pace Car
Thanks Barry. Yeah my friend Chris is the mastermind behind these. They have not been cheap to create thats for sure, they have to have jigs and tooling made to be produced. but they will be the only caps you will ever need.
Ian, are the Daytona caps different in any way to regular ones that came with the turbocast wheels ? i honestly thought they would be the same and it was just the rim that was different. If your able to confirm this then these stainless caps should work on your rims too

Re: New Purchase! 1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona Pace Car
The location of the valve looks to be more inboard on the aero rim than on a regular turbocast. I guess the obvious thing to do would be to measure the distance between the tire and the edge where the cap would sit and see if it's the same for both rims or is different.

Ian, the company behind these caps make all sorts of Firebird parts. This is their Email.
autofabricationdesign@gmail.com
Price is around $900 for a complete kit shipped. Out of my price range for sure but they're hand assembled and finished and better than oem. I wish i had deeper pockets. Maybe one day...

Agent13 - your message is a timely godsend!
Scott and Barry - thanks for sharing the tantalizing info on the glorious caps that now exist!!!
Already found the FaceBook page for craftsmen responsible - hopefully, I can convince my wife that they are "necessary"....
Sadly, I haven't had the chance to drive mine lately. Not because I didn't want to (who would EVER say that?!) but due to being away from home since late February. Have required training that will be done by week's end (FINALLY) but then we will be moving. Final destination? Michigan. Looks like a move with a trailer queen is in my future but I knew that was coming anyways - it was all foretold by the HR Gods.
On a brighter note, I do have some more pictures to post, taken prior to heading off to this training.
Thanks to y'all for the info!

Did I pull off an actual quote?
Wow, that was unintended - some Saturday night I'm having!
I don't believe it's a full replacement - the guy I bought it from said (i believe) they redid the fabric only... you can see the little of excess that was glued on after cutting it (top-left lip of headliner in picture). Either way, they did an excellent job it looks like.

I'll be somewhere around Livonia / Ann Arbor. Got selected for Recruiting Duty, so that'll be interesting. I did see mention of the F-body Club getting together in June - was actually thinking about coming out for that - provided I'm not working that Saturday.
Hopefully I'll see you there Dave!

Yes, the annual Meet & Greet is in June at Bakers. Bakers is a very active supporter of our hobby, and has events at their restaurant all season long.

I should be there, car or not.

I hear that. But, getting out and using them is what we have them for. Theoretically anyway. The Meet & Greet is very low key, and a good excuse for a meal out.
The Widetrackers are a good club. Lots of activities, lots of eating.

Hey y'all! Settled in here in Michigan, loving this spring weather today lol! Just pull a CEL code of 42 on the pace car... not having a lot of luck getting info on what could be causing it. Especially since when I drove it last 4-5 months ago and threw the light, it didn't give any symptoms... aside from speedo cutting out. Ran fine. Still doing good today, when I started it up for a bit... light persists...
Any thoughts on cause? Didn't find much to help out here, so figured I'd ask y'all!
Hope y'alls Sunday's good!

That one is pretty easy, the electronic spark bypass is disconnected/broken by the transmission fluid dipstick (black and brown single wire), or the HEI module is going bad.

Just saw pictures of your car from last year. Did you ever put that perfect original 1983 dash pad you got from me in your car yet? Sounds like your enjoying Michigan over the Washington rain. I'm glad your still enjoying your car even though you have to fiddle with these cars now and then! Take care buddy.

From what I can tell, it's related to my 4 wires coming out the base/side of the distributor. When I fiddled with them and then tried to start it, the CEL was off, then came back as it ran... wonder if there's a way to fix them w/o a whole new distributor going in....

Well good news - I finally got time to pop the distributor cap off and check those 4 wires to the computer out...
would you know it, one had broke/Got cut. One butt splice later, and CEL is off!
now for that pesky speedo cable- what do you think: upper to dash or lower to trans?

So the CEL wants to stay off, but comes back. Gonna try a new HEI (or ignition) module next to see if stays away.
Thanks for the tip on the speedo Simo. That'll be my next hard task!

Well, replaced ignition module and I'm not getting the previous code any more... then I goofed and mixed up my wires for cylinders 1 and 7... not sure how I made it all 35 miles to work, but got that sorted before driving home
Unfortunately, i got two new codes - 24 (speed sensor) and 44 (lean exhaust). Would speedo cable have any affect on the sensor? Hope I interpreted those codes right...
Kill one gremlin and get two more lol

Ian,
The speed sensor is related to the cable, is the cable bouncing? Lean exhaust is most likely the oxygen sensor.

The lower cable ending up bring the problem, speedo is back! O2 sensor swapped out too. No CEL after warming up and driving like 10-15 miles.
Speedo is still bouncy at lower speeds and I only found one point that holds it to the frame.
Any suggestions on any other tie down points?

Yes, get 4-5 zip ties and secure it to the brake lines down there, I had the same issue, and after doing this it solved the problem, the cable is flexing while going down the road.
When you work on the crossfire let me know, it probably needs a balance and new gaskets, if you haven't done it already.
