Oh man..we’ve seen this one..
missing the 3rd brake light and scrapey-scrape on the nose..
I don’t know if being stored on a lift for 20 years is awesome or not.. would have to drive it..
I forget what the verdict was on this one but there is a post..

Re: Opinions from the 3rd gen committee on this '89 IROC vert
I personally think the third brake light issue would effect the value especially since 86 was the only year that had that high mounted light.. some people think it’s ugly, but it’s unique to that year and someone changed it.. And especially since the car is being touted as original down to the tires and new car scent.. That third brake light would bug my OCD

I also mentioned in the other thread, if this car was delivered in 11/85, it should have had an 85 mph speedo. The 145 speedo came after January production when the federal law changed.

Still a nice car, but someone has messed with it, either because of preference or other reasons. If the speedo has been changed, it makes me wonder about actual mileage. If I did a carfax and there was even the slightest mileage discrepancy, that would be a red flag for me.
But like i said, still a beautiful car, but with an asterisk or two.

I am finding other 1986 IROC's with the 145 mph speedo - and the carfax backs up the mileage on that car
I think the speedo could be correct (and original) - what do you guys think?

My understanding was the 5-speed LB9 and the L98 got the 145mph speedo..
My 85 LB9 had the 85mph speedo and my 87 LB9 5-speed had the 145mph speedo

'87 and on, all L98 and G92 LB9 got the 145 speedo. Not all 5 speed LB9s were G92s.

I think it's legit, the build sheet is with the car (which may indicate the speedo installed), the mileage on the autocheck report matches the current odometer - because of that, I highly doubt the speedometer was replaced.

Ray, that is what is in debate - this car was delivered to the customer 11/1985 (early 86 car)
however, it has the 145 mph speedo - research (and the original owner) says it is the original speedo
and it matches the history reports for the documented mileage

Re: Opinions from the 3rd gen committee on this '89 IROC vert
The build sheet for this car states instrument cluster NDM 181
I'm thinking that should clear this up - just need to find out what cluster that was.
The original owner had all the receipts for work done to the car
at the dealer and the seller is going to go through them for clues.

I can't find what NDM 181 is. I guess we should research this. I think a manufacturer selling a car with anything beyond an 85 mph speedo was illegal until 1/1/86.
EDIT: I ran through this RPO decoder and couldn't find it.http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=30
The plot thickens.

I looked at a few different build sheets for L98 cars and the “INST CLUSTER” said “NH 061”
I’m assuming that would be the 145 speedo..

I just googled a bunch 3rd gen build sheets. The instrument cluster part has no rhyme nor reason to me.

Yeah, there was another part that said speedo gear but that was different on all of them..
I was looking for that code NDM 181 but didn’t see it anywhere.. figured an 87 L98 would have the code somewhere with the 145mph speedo..
very curious

It's possible car was delivered and owner swapped the speedo very shortly thereafter, not substantially altering mileage.

Re: Opinions from the 3rd gen committee on this '89 IROC vert
First is a 1987 5.7 with 3.27 rear round gauges
INST CLUSTER NGJ 061
Second is a 1990 5.7 with 3.23 rear and half moon gauges
INST CLUSTER NH 061
The third is a thirdgen with LG4 and 2.73 rear
INST CLUSTER NDC 181
I’d think the speedo gear and speedo cable would vary based on year, axle , transmission.
Id think the instr cluster would also be different from the early third gens to the yellow/half moon gauges.
I’m leaning towards the speedometer being changed. I have a feeling someone who would change the spoiler and brake light for the sake of looks would also be unhappy with an 85mph speedometer staring back at them.. That would create a mileage discrepancy as well, right?
Very precarious..

88IROCVertZ - thanks for the info, but keep in mind this car is a LB9 as no 5.7 was offered in 86 - I tend to agree with you but have seen many strange things over the years in
researching these cars - hopefully I can get it figured out, the fact the mileage on the odometer matches the historical mileage on the autocheck and car fax reports in encouraging
and I hope there is a paper trail to this if the speedometer was swapped out for a 145 mph unit

Yeah.. I found a lot of 86 305 TPI cars with 145 speedos.. some with 85mph speedos.. strange how only the G92 5-speeds and L98 got that speedo after 86.. what an odd year 86 was..

Early 86 cars had the 85 mph speedo - many later 86 cars had the 145 mph unit - this car was an early 86 (delivered 11/1985) making us all wonder how it got the 145 mph unit ???

My 1988 IROCZ vert has the LB9, G92, (3.23 rear gears) G80. Automatic with the 145MPH speedometer, and my Tack red lines at 5.000 which only came with the G92, that year, it also has the external oil cooler and is 100% original with 17,000 miles on it. It doesn't have rear disks. You couldn't get rear disk brakes with the auto verts but could with the 5 speeds in 1988 so figure out how all that came about!

Here is an example from a firebird cluster - the build sheet would have indicated ZH for this instrument cluster

If that’s the case I’d guess it would only correspond to the group of cars being built at that time in that order at that place..

Also, I have many build sheets. I have not been able to determine a pattern yet. I might have to write down all the variables and see if I can find something.

Update: (for those who are following) - The seller states the original speedo was removed not long after the car was delivered by the selling Chevrolet dealer
and the 145 mph speedo was dealer installed - the mileage shown on the 145 speedo is accurate and correct and the work is fully documented and includes all the original
receipts from the Chevrolet dealer that performed the work including the work order and purchase of the 145 mph speedo - other then the 3rd brake light thing, this car is legit
and original !! The seller came down in price and is willing to accept a reasonable offer

Sounds pretty reasonable.. maybe the 87s were out or about to come out and the first owner wanted to upgrade some things.. I know people who bought brand new cars when the new models came out and made little upgrades so their car didn’t look like last years model.. especially if the changes seemed for the better..
Seems like you might be able to get a good deal on a pretty sweet car..
