$4,500 given the work needed. It's still a great car, though, and a perfect starting point to make really nice driver. It needs a lot of work, but it sure has a lot going for it, too.

Oh I know lol. If it was in my back yard and I had the extra cash laying around, I would probably be willing to go up to that amount for it. For me, its SUPER desirable. Its a rag top, the right color for me, and optioned like I'd want. And I can do all of the work it needs by myself. It's not a rusted out pos.....its a super solid car, and it's all there. You can enjoy the crap out of it while it's being fixed up....and you dont need to make a show car out of it, either. I'd replace the fender, replace the top and drive it. The injectors aren't a big deal, either.
It'll bring more than that on ebay, for sure.
I always laugh at the guys that think it needs to be fixed up into a museum piece and think the the cost to get it there exceeds what it'll be worth in the end, and therefore this car isn't worth $1,000. Cars like this have value, too.......and value to a LOT of buyers.
I already have a garage queen, and I'd love to get my hands on a car like this to drive all the time and enjoy the **** out of.

So, here goes.
If this car had no dents, didn't need new injectors, had a better interior and the top didn't need replacing, I could see it selling in well presented form, for 9K to over 10K.
In it's present form, I'd call it a 5 or 6K car. Maybe more to the right buyer

I was going to say $6k tops.. If it’s 1 owner and clean as a whistle underneath..
It would need body work.. You’d want at least $5k in paint and body, new decals, $1500 for a new top, new injectors, Interior would need to be redone (seats are beat) $2k not including carpets if they are good.
You’d have to put $8-9k into it to have it show well. It could be around the same or cheaper than finding the same car that doesn’t need all that.. (assuming they’d sell it for $6k)
If you can do paint/body work yourself and replace a top, you could come out on top with this one..

Folks underestimate what it costs to properly restore an interior. This interior is pretty trashed. The dashpad looks uncracked though. Keep in mind that replacement seat covers don't even look anywhere near OEM.

I know you can get covers made with the OEM fabric for around $2k and then you can pay a shop $500 for installation or do it yourself..
If there’s broken trim, door skins need replacing, carpet worn with holes, center console cover cracked, etc.. Yes it can probably cost even more than exterior. Can’t forget about those door sills too..
I’d worry what the underside looks like with the seats like that! Looks like the car was outside with a leaky roof..
Theres a reason I was really looking for a car with mint all original interior.. I’d much rather have a car painted than deal with all that..

Not really though. To me, they are like lost puppies who follow me home because no one else wanted them. Once I give them a make over, they find a good home,and another puppy shows up. It's kind of fun and interesting!

Well, I came close to getting burned on this one.
And this is what I learned. It's okay to bring home a mouse infested non-running field find. And it's okay to bring home a car with accident damage which parked it 20 years ago. It's NOT okay to bring home a non-running, mouse infested, field find with accident damage which parked it 20 years ago, (unless it's Boss 429 or Hemi 'Cuda), because the effort and cost will simply exhaust you.
Thank heavens, an AMC collector/restorer, took this one off my hands and I nearly broke even.

Oh, you have no idea. The weird thing with this car was, even though it had spent 20 years under a tree in North Dakota, it had no rust. I mean, how does that happen? The AMC guy who bought it, had a rusty 1979 AMX he was planning on restoring. As he loaded this one on his trailer, he kept looking at the wheel wells and floor pans and kept repeating, Oh My God. Oh My God. Oh My God. It was at that point I knew..........I could have gotten more money out of him! . Actually I was just exhausted with it and glad it went to someone who appreciated it.

A rust free semi running driving car is 75% of the battle for me. Def don't need to buy it and throw a ton of cash at it right off the bat, just fix what's needed to safely enjoy it on the road. That fender dent could be worked out enough to be a driver. I sure wouldn't replace it because of the date code and vert mods (or maybe I'm lazy).
Throw some injs and a top at it then slowly gather parts for interior while driving it.

Since we are talking about 89 IROC vert values......I just found this one locally, a 2 owner car with 45,000 miles, looks to be mostly original
What is the opinion on price for this one ???

Yes, I posted a couple pics of this car almost a year ago - the seller had a title issue to resolve and he just contacted me

The last two look like they'd clean up nice. The Bright Red would be a pass for me, but the Iroc decals would make it more valuable from a Hawaiian shirt perspective. I'd rather have the titanium cherry 92 Z28 (all things being equal), even though it doesn't have the "IROC" bonus, it's a better car day and night.

I agree with you Scott, but for me, I like the 92 Z/28 vert better then the 89 IROC vert, that is why I agreed with Drew.
But, yes, that 89 IROC vert with 45K miles is a good buy as well - I'm going to look at both cars on Friday and will report back as to what I see
and maybe post up some more pics as well - I'd like to buy both, but the practical side of me is forcing me to choose 1 or the other - LOL

What is the price of the '92? You posted about it last year and said it had 13k miles. Now it only has 10,500? How's that possible? Did the price go up since last year? That was a good buy at last year's pricing, so it'd be even better this year.

That was my mistake - the 92 still has 13K miles - the price went down $500 to $17K - looking forward to see both cars in person

i seen a twin to that red one over the summer with 39k on it and it sold for 13k .. if you can get it for a few grand cheaper then the asking price it looks like a good deal ..

The IROC-Z was probably one of the most iconic cars of the 1980's. I see the red car being able to bring $20k. To me, the desirability if the IROC is far greater than the 91-92 cars. It just seemed like EVERYONE wanted an IROC back in the day...and I just didnt see the same popularity with the 91-92 cars back then. I mean, they were pretty popular, but it just wasnt the same..

I love am both but they won't fetch 20k. Maybe 15k. I'd rather have the 89. I think just having those "IROC" stickers on the doors makes it more appealing.

I think it wouldn't be ridiculous to ask around 20K for it, but this time of year it's gonna sell for around 13-14K.

If it's as nice as I've been told, I think it's a $15K - $16K this time of the year and in the summer months closer to a $20K car. (I'm told it's pristine)....
We all know finding buyers for these cars this time of the year is tough - Looking forward to seeing both of these cars on Friday !!

i think the real nice low mileage third gens are getting to the point where the price doesnt matter on the time of the year it is , kinda like the grand nationals .. and ive tried to use that line on the grand national owners and get a deal in the winter and they dont care what time of year it is .. they know most people buying these cars have money and buy on instinct and the car wont be driven that much anyway ..
