Sports coupe low option

Why do people mess these cars up so bad? Just got a 88 sports coupe with a decent body. Has the hole hack over the fuel pump like 9 out of 10 do. Plain Jane car. Even manual vent's. Some one tried to change it and messed it up alot. Here's what I found. Motor runs with gas poured in throttle body. Injector wires half fried off. No pulse in connectors. Accessories fuse blown. Fuel pump doesn't work with key when turning engine over. But does work with hot wire at sending units pig tail. Dash is a mess. Not the pad so much. But the dash it's self. Now is where you come in. I want to save this car but can't dump 2k in it. I've got alot of parts from different year models. I have a nice dash out of a 86 carbureted z28. Have engine harness and ECM out of a 88 TBI Camaro. That's good. I've got a 89 firebird parts car with running engine with what seems to be stuck open injectors. A 85 iroc parts car with a good dash. I'm going to pull the engine harness and ECM and install the other 88 stuff to start with. Getting the other stuff back the way it was made won't be so easy. Pics coming soon.

Re: Why?

Well, to answer the question why do people cut a hole to get to the fuel pump reason most people dont have the knowledge or they just dont care. Its not hard to drop the rear end down to get to it i would rather do that then hack it up.

Re: Why?

Just plan everything out on paper first and make long term realizations about the use of the vehicle.

If you can't see yourself keeping it forever or getting back what you invested then start with something cleaner.

Re: Why?

This is a c41 car. Correct me if I'm wrong. That means it came with no air conditioning. They attempted to install air in the non air box and rig up the wiring and controls. The box doesn't look like a standard air box.

Re: Why?

I won't even buy a thirdgen if a hole is cut out above the fuel tank. It's the first thing I check on a car I'm interested in. I walked away from a GTA once because of it and don't regret it a bit. Do you have a picture of the A/C delete box? I installed an aftermarket fiberglass one in my 82 Trans Am and no hacking of the wiring was required. It's shaped differently than a factory A/C delete box, but I was able to use the factory A/C blower motor and resistor harness. The only thing I did differently was reroute the main harness under the box.

Re: Sports coupe low option

I will get pics of the box tomorrow. It runs up and down like a a/c type. But it has holes instead of elongated groves. 1 piece box instead of 2. Wire harness has the factory connectors but they don't match the AC pump. Is c41 a no AC car?

Here's the box. See how they tried to solder the line to it.

Re: Sports coupe low option

Oh, now I get it, they added A/C to a non-ac box... I missed that... That is crazy right there! Can't really tell if the box is home made or if it's some type of aftermarket a/c box for a different vehicle. Got a wider shot of the whole thing? Never seen that before!

Re: Sports coupe low option

I only paid 650 and the engine run good as long as you keep feeding it. If ECM is bad can it still run if you hand feed it?

Re: Sports coupe low option

hear is your RPO. C41HVAC SYSTEM, HEATER OUTSIDE AIR, WITH FAN
as for it running and a bad ecm it is very possible. you said the wires on the injectors are half fried. it could have fed power back to the ecm burning out the injection system in the ecm. i would pull the wires out of the harness for the injectors and trace them back a bit and atleast cut them and check for a signal in the good area. if your getting a signal there then it might be ok, have to put new pigtails on them. also check grounds and 12+ for burnt fusable links, or broken wire. this could be an issue as well.

Re: Sports coupe low option

I have another engine harness for a 88 and ECM I'm going to probably put in. Take out all the stuff that was add for the AC. I think it will save time and headaches in the long run.

Re: Sports coupe low option

Got the car in the shop finally. Hood is off and got a better look at the mess of a fan box. It's gotta be off some other vehicle. It's only a quarter inch from the exhaust manifold and stick's farther off the firewall. I may have to go to another forum to get the info I will need to straighten out the mess.
