Thinking about selling. Scrutinize this! 1982 Pace Car

Ok guys. I know you enjoy looking at cars that are for sale. I've often wondered what you guys would find wrong with one of my cars. Maybe you can also provide some suggestions on pricing based on condition. So, what do you guys think it's worth?

1982 Z28 Pace Car, LG4, Super T10 4 speed, PW, PL, power hatch release, AC, ttops, 29k original miles.

Recent repairs include Chuck Pelton steering wheel re-wrap, valve cover gaskets, front calipers, front brake hoses, rear wheel cylinders, complete brake flush, new clutch/throwout bearing, upgraded front and rear sway bars (36mm/24mm), carburetor adjustments, both outside window sweeps, the correct rear hatch switch and all new speakers.

What's wrong: The AC doesn't work, some of the interior blue panels are fading (easy fix), both door sills are cracked, the seat belt covers are missing, the original radio doesn't work very well (newer radio is in place now), slight tear in rear seat fabric, small paint chip in driver door (in process of being fixed), door moldings are cracking and the side windows have scratches that will require replacing. The entire car has been repainted once in 1989 or 1990.

This is a nice one and a 4 speed to boot. You'd think a Pace Car would go for top dollar, but they typically don't. BTW, I've forwarded it to my friend who's been looking for a nice Pace Car with a stick.

What? No scrutinizing? Tell me what you see wrong with it. Oh, I did forget to mention that it has the nasty black undercoating.

I actually think it looks nice. The repaint may affect value, or maybe not. As you can see, the Chuck Pelton leather is a lighter color than the factory leather, but it will darken with use. I needs a few minor items addressed that you mentioned. No biggie.

I have another friend with a 2,000 mile Pace Car he's thinking of selling. It's a CFI auto, though. He asked me what I thought he should ask. It's a tough one, because these things are all over the place on price. I told hime start high, since his is probably one of the nicest ones in the country. I told him, start around 20K and take high teens.

On your car Scott, I'd ask 14-ish. But, I could be wrong, you know as much as I do.

I agree with Chazman on the value. I dont know why their values are so soft. I absolutely LOVE the 82 Pace cars, and I've owned one, too.

Bummer about the back seat. I actually have a pace car rear seat back at my brothers farm.....but I'm not sure what shape it's in.

That's a damn nice car Scott......I'd love to have it!

How in the world do you get all your cars to shine like that??? Even *blah* colors such as grey end up gleaming!

Re: Thinking about selling. Scrutinize this! 1982 Pace Car

Hi Scott,
I have always LOVED the 1982 Pace Car edition, and yours is very nice. In order to get top dollar, fix the items you already mentioned. Find a good upholstery shop and they can probably fix that rip in the back seat. See if they can steam your seats and door panels as well, they can straighten the piping and make the seats look like new.

Under the hood looks good, but the coolant tank and washer tank are letting it down. Get new reproduction tanks and it will brighten up the engine bay. Don't scrimp on the little details, that's what separates a really good car from a top-notch car. On a top-dollar car, you can look all day and not find a single nit to pick!

Re: Thinking about selling. Scrutinize this! 1982 Pace Car

To an extent, I agree, but when a car like this, a Pace Car, has already had a repaint done, do the underhood plastic tanks really bring it down? I think the LG4 hurts this car more than the issues of a 37 year old car. However, I did consider replacing the plastic tanks with new.

The rear seat is going to either cost me the price of a full interior (to match) or close to it. I'm not sure I'll recover that cost. I've already contacted multiple upholstery shops and was quoted upwards of $600 to replace the panel. I can get a full seat set for that price, but then they won't match the rest of the interior because they're so new.

I have also reached out to get the plastic paint to fix the faded interior plastics, but I haven't done the work yet.

What, no original speakers, OMG you will be lucky to get $ 10 cents on the dollar for what it is worth!
Scott the car looks fantastic and by your pics, the way you present it, it is hard to find a flaw. Unless as you did and that is point it out. Other cars we see here are trying to portray the cars as something they are not. I am not sure why this is not a 20K car. I would think a Pace Car would bring more $, the vette's sure do.

I like Qwk want to know what you use on your cars, man do they shine!

Re: Thinking about selling. Scrutinize this! 1982 Pace Car

$600.00 to replace a patch of fabric on a seat?? Is it mostly the cost of the fabric? Man that seems high.

I can't really scrutinize the car because a price is not posted. For instance if you'd said "Here she is, first $40,000 takes it." Well, scrutiny would certainly be in order then.

I see a well cared for, clean example car with a few minor flaws here and there that I think most buyers would pretty much ignore for a chance to own such a nice 82 pace car.

That car is show ready. I'd have some Camaro memorabilia in the hatch including a T-Shirt that just climbs up over the back seat to cover the rip and show it with pride!

See to me.....the only way to have an 82 is with the LG4, 4 speed combo. I'd personally never buy a Cross Fire car. The only good thing about CFI is the cool hood flaps, lol.

This video is a fellow TGO member. What's not to love about this?

Personally, I'd rather have the LG4, 4 speed, than the auto CFI.

I would say yes, the tanks let the engine bay down a bit. It was the first thing that caught my eye, everything else under the hood looks good, so the tanks are the only things that really stand out. They are yellow, and all the black plastics still look good. The reproduction tanks are not expensive, and they would be the last touch on the engine. It's not like the tanks are going to be a deal-breaker, it's just a finishing touch. If they are done, I would look under that hood, and think, "I can't find a single part that looks out of place." That's the mark of an outstanding car.

You car is super nice, I am trying to encourage you to take the last few steps to make it THE pace car to have.

Re: Thinking about selling. Scrutinize this! 1982 Pace Car

My comment regarding the LG4 was not in reference to the pace car options of the LG4 or CFI. It was an in general statement. Here we have a 1982 Z28 with an LG4 producing a whopping 145hp. If the LG4 was putting out 200, then it might be a different story, but it's a whopping 145!!

I use Wolfgang Uber compound with a Porter Cable DA polisher to get the shine up. I then use 3M Finesse-It finishing polish. To maintain it, I use Meguiar's NXT 2.0. I keep the dust off using Garage One spray quick wax.

Well, honestly, there is no claybar residue on this car. you might find camera trickery though! Or flash issues.

If you don't have photos of Boyd Coddington giving you a foot massage at a meet & greet, this car will never garner the attention it deserves!

Car is beautiful even with it's "flaws". 82 Pace Cars are often completely trashed. Yours stands out from the crowd. You'd be crazy to sell it.

looks like you have a nice car there scott .. i do agree with you on the lg4 thing .. its hard to sell a sports car with a 145 horsepower for good money .. i just went through this with my 83 trans am lg4 , 5 speed ,3.73 gears and 33k miles .. guys on this board thought it was a 10-12k car but in reality i had a hard time getting 6k ..

I love the car and don't mind the LG4. Easy to drop a 350 right in easy disguise. My Pace Car had the CFI and I pulled it. Your car is probably my favorite Third gen Camaro and I wish I was in the position to buy it because I do want another one day. I think it could fetch 14-16k.

I think selling it in the winter was probably the bigger obstacle. I seriously thought about buying that car....but just the wrong time of year.

That was a cool car!

But the fact of the matter is, all the money right now is on IROCs. Fast ones, slow ones, LG4 ones, TPI ones, doesn't matter.

Re: Thinking about selling. Scrutinize this! 1982 Pace Car

Scrutinizing the car isn't needed became YOU as the owner know more about it and are realistic! No one needs to get your head out of the clouds.
I believe these 82 Pace Cars cars are a STAND OUT. We could have 40 IROCs at a show but people would attack to the Pace Car. It is a KEY part of the heritage about these cars. They are WAY undervalued in my opinion. 145hp vs 10 years later at 245hp isn't enough to brag about. I buy these cars for looks, styling & overall memories. If you are buying to go fast...lol....you have a LOT to learn.
Sadly the 82 Pace Car just dosen't have much value. You couldn't pay me to take one with a CF & I believe yours is the one to have. If I didn't know the market, I'd say $18k BUT we all kind of know the current market & I doubt $10k. Keep it & let EVERYONE know you have it. Possibly someone has the perfect spot for it that has the money to make a crazy offer!
I personally would LOVE to own the car. I just bought one of the mini aerodynic pacecar lights off Ebay so I could have that stashed away for the day I finally do own a Pace Car.

As far as the water tanks go I agree with you that new ones would be a finishing touch to the engine bay. Reproduction radiator tanks are readily available for the 1982, but try to find a new window washer tank made for that year and it is impossible to find. I've been looking for a new one for my 1985 for years. The 1988 and newer window washer tanks are easy to find, but not the older style that this car has. If anyone has the correct one for sale pm me I'm still looking. Another Item that is really hard to find are door sill plates that aren't cracked for the 1982 model.

As far as the car goes it is a beautiful car and Scott has described what it needs to make it perfect.

I think I got that tank from Hawks Motorsports. Mine is an '86, but with the non-pump style, same as this.

That isn't the correct one for the 1982-1985 cars the part number for those cars is 10017700. I already have a new one just like yours that I bought years ago by mistake. Yours has the part number 1003581 on the top. It sure looks nice when the tanks are pure white and the plastic hasn't yellowed. Here is a link to a thread I posted 8 years ago that gives the various different window washer tanks for the third gen cars.

AFAIK, the correct '82-'85 tank is not available.

Pace cars are the type of car you love to see other people preserving.

Got a chuckle out of reading your comment. I wish someone were preserving MY Pace Car.

Got this stuff and results are amazing. Scott knows what he is talking about!

For anybody in the Pigeon Forge area, you might see my old Pace Car running around at car shows. That's where it ended up.
