The Firebird standard gauge package was a really nice design. I always thought that the Mustang interior had sort of a stripper quality to it, like it was intended for guys who were going to track the car and really didn't care about interior looks. Maybe that was some of the thought behind it.
I was never a big fan of the GT's, the tail lights and ground fx always looked cheesy to me. I had a 7up LX a few years back and I loved the look of it, but even on a car that was "loaded", it was definitely lacking inside.

The Foxes are fun in a straight line, but 3rd gens are simply better overall cars. In the way they drive and handle, their build quality, appointments and feel.

The ride is horrible in a fox lol. Fun cars, but I was daily driving one for awhile and I think I lost a few fillings lol.

I think the collector part of foxes is pretty much maxed - when was the last time you saw a basic 5L fox pull 30k? At least not in Canada. They don't have anything that ties them to that era. Third gens had such unique "Corvette-ish" looks, TPI motors, pop up headlights etc. While Foxes are really just basic looking cars. Interior's were low quality and didn't seem to have much design behind them, and the exteriors (even though I think are sweet looking) are very simple and ugly to a lot of people. Your top trimmed convertible 5L could easily be confused with a Chrysler LeBaron.
collectors pay huge money for mint no mile fox bodys .. when was the last time you saw a basic iroc bring 30k ?

I'm talking in Canadian dollars btw, but regardless there are a decent number of them that get posted through here. When I say "basic" I mean not a special variant like a 1LE. Not often, but I've seen a few -5000 mile/km foxes run through Autotrader/Kijiji and the asking price usually floats around 20k CAD, while a similar iroc is high 20's / 30k

Other than 1978 (or other Bandit color-schemed late 2nd gens) and TTAs, is this anything new? Hasn't a comparably equipped Camaro of similar condition and historical pedigree always garnered bigger money than the Pontiac?

This isn't a knock against birds, either; collector car market valuations don't always reward objective superiority. Cars are emotional purchases more so than logical. What are the most iconic GM cars of the 80s? I'd say the IROC-Z, Grand National, C4, and KITT.

Chevrolet has always been the bigger/more popular marque for GM, at least in the last 50 or so years. Makes sense that outside of a few stand out examples (like a Bandit Trans Am) the Chevrolet model collector market is going to be more popular.

I think the Pontiacs had a better looking pony car every year except 82-84. Certainly after 92. Still I agree that Iroc is king of the 80s as far as popularity and seems to be that way in the market as well.

I always kind of liked that the Pontiacs were less common than Chevys and Fords.
