1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

Hi there:
I just bought this 1992 Z28 convertible 5 speed with no engine and I have tons of questions!
First, the car needs some work. Based on its title, is suppose to be black but the two previous owner painted the car its current blue with custom two tone blue/black interior. I am trying to find out what options this car came with but considering the interior was redone, I am assuming I won't find a build sheet under the rear seat. Is there any other place that I can find a build/option sheet?
How can I find the option list Based on the VIN number? Based on the VIN ( 1G1FP33F2NL107337) what I have found is the car is 1992, 305 LB9 engine with manual transmission. Is there anything else I can find with this VIN number? It has 4 wheel disc, power door and window.
The car just came with one ignition key. Is the same key opens the trunk? If not, how can I pop the trunk? Any trick?
Is this blue looks like stock period correct blue for this car?
Thanks

Re: 1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

Look on the underside of the center console lid for the RPO code list. It will tell yiu exactly what the car is and what it came with. Does the car have the fog light switch?

Re: 1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

Thank you. I found it and now I have a lot more questions!
If the fog light switch is the one under the headlight switch (it just has on/off, doesn't say what), yes, it does have the fog light switch. What does that mean?
I have been looking all over the web, including this site, to decode the option list. I can't find few of them and few of them don't make sense.
I can't find the meaning to following codes:
B86, D8N, NB2, UX6, VG8, YA7, YF5, 19C, 19I 199, 41T, 6XW, 7XW, 8NM, 84P, 84Q and 84U
Also, I have questions about these two codes:
- 1AY= Dealer ordered: does mean the car was ordered by the dealer or by a person through the dealer?
- 1SC: Option package 3; What is this package?
- J41: front disc and fear drum: This car has 4 wheel disc?!
- MD8 and MXO: Auto 4 speed tranny OD: This car has 5 speed manual and it does look factory installed?!
Also if you can answer my question above about the key, if the ignition key opens the trunk too, or not.
Any help would be appreciated.
Update: I found few of the codes: 84Q and 84U seems to be custom paint: Hawaiian Orchid. 84P is gray wheel option. 6 and 7XW and 8NM are "computer selected springs". What does that mean?
Sorry about all these questions.

That means it's probably a real Z28 as RS's don't have fog lights. Your RS front grille threw us off...also it looks like your car has the 1985-90 style hood louvers. But nonetheless, it shows an "F" engine code in the VIN, so that's undisputable evidence that it's a Z28 right there.

Thanks. So the front bumper cover and hood have changed at some point. Or is it just an insert inside the pumper which house the fog light?

Why don’t you try the key in the hatch, and see if it opens it? There’s no way to know if the ignition or hatch lock have been changed, so it may or may not work.

It's just the grille. Chances are it's missing the fog lights behind it too though. You can get the grille new from GM for around $110. The finish on them sucks though, haven't even had mine for 2 years and it's already flaking off.

Sorry about all these questions.

Most '92 Z28s had drum brakes. Check for RPO J65 for 4 wheel disc. If that RPO is not there, someone has added rear disc.

5 speed swaps are not uncommon, particularly in a car with no engine that's also had exterior and interior color changes.

That's really a shame that this was originally a Purple Haze/Hawaiian Orchid car; that's one of the rarest colors on any third gen ('92 Camaro only), and IIRC there weren't many Z28 verts built in that color.

"computer selected springs" is the same term GM has used for every car with every spring configuration since the 1970s. It means absolutely nothing.

Re: 1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

Meh... Enough froot loops and teenage girls have Maaco'd a car purple because its the color of their favorite dinosaur that it's more than OK a factory purple was set right in the world.

In all fairness, does it really matter what it was? The original engine is long gone, and with it the 'value' to collectors that would appreciate what it was. Now is the time to be concerned with what it is or what it could become. It is/ a blank slate, a project, it can be whatever you want it to be. Unless you're planning to restore it, and I can tell you it'll cost several more times as much to restore a thirdgen than to just buy one already nice, then what difference does it make?

Truth told, the market on Z28 convertibles is soft. Maybe in 5 or 10 or 20 years it'll heat up and suddenly it'll be fiscally sound to restore a car like that. But you'd be playing the lottery. My vote would be to put it together and enjoy it.

Re: 1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

Problem is solved! It is RS As you can see on the picture, the light reflection on the VIN number made the 'E" looks like "F". and since somebody was trying to colone the car to Z28 with al the outside badge and trim package, I thought it is a "Z". At the end of the day it really doesn't matter since I was just looking for a third gen convertible manual preferably not red (no offense to people with red Camaro) to build up. I am just finishing my 79 Z28 LS swap which I am going to take on the road this summer and I already have a vortec engine lined up for this one which I am doing a mild cam swap on it. I was hoping if it is a "Z" car I might be able to reuse some of the suspension stuff. I guess now , I have to see what kind of T5 it has. I believe the rear end cam up as 2.73 and I have to change that as well.
So thanks for all the help.
The key doesn't open the trunk, that is why I asked before I really try hard with the key. So, do these trunks open from inside? It seems this car has rear folding seat option, if I can get to the trunk from inside?!

Re: 1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

When it comes to the later convertibles, there isn't much difference between a Z28 and an RS anyway. The Z28 would be TPI, and have a Z28 hood with blisters, fog lights, and Z28 badges. The 305 TPI would be the lower output version with the same exhaust as a TBI RS. A Z28 convertible would even have the same F41 mid-level suspension as a V8 RS convertible. It really doesn't matter. Do it up however you want to do it.

Good to know. Thanks.
At the end, I paid $1700 for the car, it has very clean interior with decent outside paint. New top and clean title. I think it is a good foundation to start with.
Thanks for all the info here.

Re: 1992 Z28 Manual Convertible

As Drew stated Since you have the F41, that is the Base suspension for the Z28, so that is a good thing...

FE1 - 671 - Base RS Suspension
F41 - 2699 - RS optional Suspension, Base Z28 Suspension
FE2 - 95 - Z28 Option

More than Half of the F41 suspension cars were RS...

Edit:
The Z28 and the RS (with V8) used the same Transmission. The only time the Z28 got a different Trans was when they went to the Performance gear option on the coupes. Honestly if you could pick up an LS with the 6 speed attached, that would be more ideal as it will better handle the power.

What trans came with the performance gear upgrade? Was it the Borg Warner T6?

It was still the same Transmission as the base V8 transmission, the only differences was the gearing and probably some stronger internals.
