91 Horn

For some reason, my horn doesn't want to work. I have taking the wires off the horn, and hard wired them, the horn IS good. I have a hard time believing it is the switch in the steering wheel because neither side works... (unless there is something I dont know, about only one switch connecting both sides) Has anyone encountered this problem? wiring / fuse / relay ... etc?

I dont even know where to begin, what to test, etc... advice please!

Its a 91 RS camaro...

Re: 91 Horn

When the steering column in my 85Z28 took a dump, I had my favorite shop put a new one in. When I got the car back, the horn didn't work. I'd press the horn button and you could hear the switch in the column click, but the horn didn't sound.

It turns out one of the connections at the horn was loose. Although it seems this isn't the case with your scenario, if you can't hear the column give an audible click when you try to sound the horn, might be a bad switch.

Re: 91 Horn

The horn in my 86 does not work. Nor does the one on the '92 RS. Same problem, neither side works. I have not bothered to take off the air bag or wheel to see the connections. I just never really worried about it but if you come up with a good reason why it does not work I will fix mine as well. Sounds like we have the same problem. My horn hardwired works.

Re: 91 Horn

yeah, sounds like the same problem. Its one of those things that isn't too urgent right now i guess, but I want to get it fixed.

If I figure it out, or if someone else knows, i'll let you know as well! thanks

Re: 91 Horn

There is a cylinder that fits into a hole of the steering wheel. THis cylinder is what the horn wires go into and terminate at a spring loaded contact so the wheel can turn. The cylinder is held in with a small plastic tab to keep pressure on the spring contact. ON mine the slot that that tab keys into had stretched out and no longer held pressure on the spring and therefore no contact and no horns from either button.
Short of removing the steering wheel you can not fix it properly. For the interim I glued the cylinder into its hole. On mine also both button were broken from age and had fallen out of their retainers. I fabricated some new (stronger) ones out of 2-part plastic resin.

Re: 91 Horn

What is the safest way to remove the steering wheel, without having an airbag blow up in my face??

Re: 91 Horn

GM Manual says pull the fuse and then disconnect it at the base of the steering column (yellow plug connector). I have a switched battery so I just did that and then pulled it. Scary at first but then you get imune to the potential for horror and gore.

Re: 91 Horn

I'm going to bring this thread back to life...

Does anyone know where the wires for the horn come out of the steering wheel. I guess my question is, is there a way to test the horn to see if the problem is in the wheel or elsewhere, before I go through the trouble of pulling it?

Re: 91 Horn

So, I went ahead and removed my air bag this afternoon, and luckily to my surprise, it was just the fact the two buttons were broken. I used a strong plastic glue and coated the entire button. I also ended up bending out the metal terminals on the bottom of the switch. Put it all back together and wolah! it works like new!!!! I now have a horn for when those obnoxious hondas cut me off...

Re: 91 Horn

Just purchased an airbag assembly from Hawks. One of the reasons is because the old one did not look like it was making contact with the horn switches, as the horn wasn’t working.

I have installed the new airbag and the horn will work intermittent and I can now hear the button places on the airbag are pushing the horn buttons now. However, the horn is intermittent. I removed the airbag and using a test light, I can put thwe probe end where the spring goes and make the horn work, intermittent it seems.

Before I start replacing a bunch more parts, I wanted some direction.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 91 Horn

Is this airbag an original GM unit from the 90's? If so, id immediately get rid of it. The 90's airbags only had a designated lifespan of 6 to 8 years. This comes directly from a colleague of mine who worked in delphi airbag division in that timeframe.
