Re: help changing air bag steering wheel

You can do it as long as you don't mind giving up the airbag. Just tell them you have an 89 Camaro. The steering column is the same, and that was the last year before the airbags were installed. Any wheel/adapter that fits an 89 should fit yours no problem. My 92 RS was wrecked in the front end when I bought it and the bag had gone off. I bought a Grant wheel on Ebay and picked up the adapter kit at Autozone. Worked just fine.

make sure the battery is disconnected because those things have killed people. I have seen some serious injuries because of bag deployment while working on the car and some car thieves have been killed because of bad hot wiring or touching the wrong spot.

Re: help changing air bag steering wheel

Yeah, good point there crytical. I didn't think about it since my bag had already gone off, but yeah, you DEFINITELY want to make sure the battery is disconnected before you start messing with them.

One other thing I forgot to mention, there is a clock spring wiring connecter inside the steering column that you can remove as well. It's not necessary, but it does clean things up a bit and make it easier to install the new wheel. I just cut the connector off the end of the wires under my dash and pulled them up through since it was no good anyhow. If you may want to put it back at some point, you'll want to remove them without cutting them and that means taking the column apart a bit more. Not difficult, just extra work.

Re: help changing air bag steering wheel

I had a 90 formula, and I replaced the airbag wheel with a grant. I loved it. I never cut any connections, and there were no special parts needed. I think the Summit reps just aren't allowed to tell you it's a direct swap for legal reasons. There could be that insurance issue if you wreck, though.
