What to do with Trans Am seats???

I have a 84 Trans Am, 15th anniversary edition and the factory seats seam to have a hard to find material. The seats say "Trans Am". Right now, my best plan is to have my local shop repad the seats, using the same material, whether or not they can do this is a question, I will go there tomorrow. Has anyone else seen this material available.

Here is the car, scroll down to see the seat pictures...

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

I've seen the 'CAMARO CAMARO CAMARO' seats before, but never the 'Trans Am' seats....A lot more subtle & not near as cheesy.

I think the CAMARO fabric is impossible to get already, so the TRANS AM fabric would be even harder to get. Custom dye the lettering on some new fabric?

Good luck man!

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

go to a shop that prints on fabric. like a place that takes peoples designs and makes company shirts out of them.

theres a place like that in my town. they can take any graphic and print or soe it on any kind of fabric, shirts hats etc... i'm sure if you can get the fabric they can help you print or get the trans am letters on the fabric somehow.

also an opportunity to do something custom but i understand if you as close to stock as possible

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

Those look like the Recaro seats, but I don't remember ever seeing them with that "Trans Am" fabric. It's pretty cool. It was probably limited to the anniversary edition.

Send a PM to 82FirebirdTA about this. He might be able to help you. He's one of the more knowledgeable guys on these boards regarding early thirdgen 'birds and Recaro seats.

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

this may not be exactly what you want, but what about finding a fabric shop that can take the "Trans Am" design, and creaete a stitch for it, so that it looks almost like it's embroidered and more perminent. It would pop a little more depending on the color of the string, but would be more permenant than dying fabric i would assume. Just an idea.

BTW, did you custom do those tail lights? I love the look.

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

Hey guys, thanks for the reply's.

After taking the seats to the local shop (the kind of furniture shop who does this kind of stuff), I have decided to wash the seats and reuse the same material.

The guy had suggested the same thing everyone else did here, print screening, embroidering etc. These are great ideas, the only problem is, if I change the front seats, they wont match the back.

So, the guy wanted $150 per seat to take the material off, put new padding in and replace the leather on the sides. Thought this was reasonable enough.

BTW, I thought about trying to find the same material but, considering they only made 1500 of these cars, I doubt that I could find someone else wanting to get rid of the seats. Even if I did find someone, I would assume they would want a pretty penny.

So, I am taking the least expensive route.

Thanks for your help guys, keep up the good work. You have a great website here.

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

That sounds like a great price for what they're doing with the seats. If you go to http://www.earlythirdgen.com/forums/ , there is a section dedicated to 15th Anniversary Trans Ams. The forum is new because they just relocated, but there are several people that are very knowledgable about the early birds. You can also look in the History/ Restoration section here, you might find out about if and where that material is available if they aren't able to salvage it.

Re: What to do with Trans Am seats???

The material may still be avaialble from SMS:

http://www.smsautofabrics.com/

I purchased exact matches for my 1985 Trans Am.

Call them and give them the information, they will send you the material swatched used for that year car. Match and order what you need.

Hope this helps

Camaro camaro camaro fabric is scarce but not gone. I got some NOS stuff just recently to redo my interior. Yea its a bit cheesy but i still like it..in fact i liked it enough to put the correct seats from the 83-85 camaros with this option in my 88 iroc.

Anyways, call up Original auto interiors. I had called them looking for the NOS fabric saying camaro all over it and they had tons of that so they might have what your looking for with any luck. Here is a link to their website. If they dont have it you will have to get lucky with some collector having some.

All i will add is dont get rid of those seats. Those are a nice original option. I see many people getting rid of those for 4th gens that done look as good IMO. Be different and go original!

Thats a very good price. For comparison..i had all seats in my car reupholstered using NOS and new material and it cost 650. I was glad to pay that though cause i have heard of people spending much more for interior work.
