Console plate swap

found a real nice console plate for my 89 bird and the question I have is this:

I need to know the best way to pull the top off the shifter so I can slide the new shifter boot back down over it's shaft as I install the new console ...

I figured with that button on the side there must be a special way to get it off without messing something up...the rest of the swap out seems like it should be simple...

alos if there's anything I should know about the switches (pwr mirrors & windows)

any help and guidance is greatly appreciated

TIA

Re: Console plate swap

There is a very small "U" clip on the front of the shifter. use a small flat screwdriver to pull that out and the shifter will slide right off..

I see now what you mean...

looks like a small flat screwdriver or maybe some small flatnosed pliers?

will it go back on as easy as it comes off?

any tricks to it before I pass the point of no return?

I was kinda concerned about the thumb button mechanism and springs and stuff goin' flying when I pulled it apart?...

had bad visions of getting it apart easy but being a problem getting it back together...

thanks

It's all self contained, nothing will fall out like springs, etc. Just get something under the staple and pull it straight out. With the staple removed the entire **** will slide up and off. It's fool proof.

that sounds good...appreciate the reassurance...

gonna try to swap it out prolly tomm...

the new plate and boot look so much better than the old one...it'll be a nice upgrade...

I have a Formula hood in the body shop for color matching should have on the car by the middle of the week...it's absolutely cherry and I got it for only 160 bucks but I had to drive all the way to port St Lucie to get it...

got my air deflector set up on this past week and lordy what a diff that makes in eng temp....

the old bird is looking more and more like a spring chicken...

add'l thanks to all the folks here who have been so helpful...

I should try and post a pic of it if I can figure out how...

thanks
