Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

Hey guys, I'm working on my 91 T/A convertible now and I've been trying to remove the driver's side door panel to replace the bad window motor. I got all of the clips/fasteners removed (as far as I can tell) but the damn thing still keeps holding on at the top where it meets the window. I simply cannot get it to come off. I tried pulling it up like the Haynes manual suggests but that thing is stuck good. The window is up because of the bad motor if that makes a difference. I looked underneath it and it doesn't seem like I forgot any fastener. I'm afraid to wrestle with it too much since I don't wanna break a rare tan leather door panel like this.

I also need help removing the rear seats, both the backs and the bottoms. I haven't even started removing the back, but some pointers or tips on problems I might encounter would be great. And I tried removing the driver's side seat bottom, but it's somehow clipped to a bracket on the floor and I don't know how to remove it. I'm afraid to break it lol.

Thank you!

THE WINDOW BEING UP MAY MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT.Its been a while since I removed mine but did you push up on the black plastic trim piece that sits on top of the door panel. It has to come off for the door panel to be removed. The armrest has to be removed as well. The door lock and trim panel around the auto locks as well.Hope this helps but if you have the manual im sure you have done all this.

Re: Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

Make sure u push in and up when u go to take it off if it's just stuck at top. It seems like it's just bein stubborn. As for the seats there is a bolt in the bottom corners of the back after those are out with the seat down you should be able to move it side to side in order to get it off of the bar. As for the bottoms there is 1 bolt underneath the front of each one just remove and then it'll come out. Hope that helps u some

Oh naturally I removed EVERYTHING on the door. I was pushing up very hard on the black part. It's stuck real good. I might need to find a way to push the window down if I wanna do that considering how you said that the window being up makes it harder. UGH. Didn't GM think that window motors often fail in the up position? Jeez. But thanks for the advice.

Anybody got anything else?

Re: Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

You've gotta push the black trim towards the window glass, and wiggle it up at the same time. The trim hooks over the top of the inner door sheetmetal, and clips on. The clips, more like hooks, are molded into the trim, so if you pull very hard they'll just break. It can be done with the window up, it's just a bit of a PITA. Sometimes it helps if you start at one end or the other.

The back seats are easy. In the middle of the lower cushion at the bottom you'll find a single bolt. Remove that bolt and the lower cushion will pull out. Most have velcro across the back that sticks to the carpet, just pull carefully. Then under the left and right bottom corners of the seat back there are studs with nuts. Remove the nuts and if it's a one piece rear it'll lift out. If it's the split rear, you'll need to slide the back away from the middle of the car. You might have to try it with the back at different angles, I seem to remember the pivot pin at the middle keys into the seat back.

Thanks for the help guys! And Drew, I didn't think of pushing the trim towards the glass, I'll have to try that. As for the seats, that sounds easy enough. And I have the one-piece rear.

Re: Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

You can see where the clips go in post #6 of the following link, though only one shows in the center of the pic and a second, a partial, on the right. You can see how the window's being up would make the situation more difficult:

There are pics of the clips in the link below. The pics in post #13 are unclear, but they should provide an idea:

That's kind of funny James, because I've never looked at the clips, or how they clip into the doors. I just figured it out in a junkyard with mud up to my socks, and after doing it more times on more cars then I can remember, I've still never looked at the clips LOL.

Re: Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

For all those that say the black trim at the top of the panel needs to come off before the door panel is removed is completely wrong. The black trim is screwed to the door panel and is accessible only when the door panel is off. You will ruin the door panel and may break the top trim if you try to remove it seperately.

With the window still up, the process to remove it is the same. Pull the bottom of the door panel out maybe 30* or so, then push the black trim in towards the glass. You may need to slide the door panel forward and back also to release the first clips. Just be careful with it.

Re: Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

the rear seats are really easy there is a bolt on the bottom of the seats 1/2 inch i think use a ratchet or pliers to get them off and then the bottoms will come out and then you should be able to find the two or four bolts for the top it depends on if you have a one peice top or a two peice, my TA had a two peice until i switched to a camaro interior any other questions just ask!

Re: Trying to remove door panel and rear seats...

Old i know, but was never stated how it was removed with window up. So how did you finally get it out? Did the black trim piece finally come up with panel? Separate? (or anyone, thx!)

Note this everyone who posts questions, when you figure it out post results so people in the future will have the benefit of your experience!
