Cockpit/Dashboard Question
Hey Guys. I need some help here. Its the first time I need to remove the dashboard or whatever it is called for changing some cables and for the roll cage. I am having a hard time to remove the cable that comes from the transmission for the speed (at least thats how it was at all other cars I had before). How can I unplug it without destroying anything and from where is the best way to access it? I already have Alien-Like ET arms and fingers but I just cant get to it... haha

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
If you have a cable-driven speedo (82-89 for Camaros), check the first post in the following link:

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
Is the dash pad off? If so, you might be able to reach down behind the cluster and unclip it that way.

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
I tried to pull the piece which holds the instruments to get behind it with my hand (thats how it worked with the cars I had before) but it feels like im reaching a point where the pressure is too strong and I might break something.

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
pull the gauges out and unclip it from the back of the gauge cluster itself.
dont try and reach up from the bottom

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
Yes thats what I am trying to but I cant reach it. But I will try it again tomorrow. Im not sure, but I think thats what they wrote in that link as well. I was already thinking to unplug it on the transmission or where it goes.

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
what you do is this:
remove the black plastic gauge cover. its held on by 8 or so torx screws
next, there is a clear plastic cover to remove, get that off.
next take the metal cover off.
now you should be able to see the white gauge gauge cluster.
there is a bolt down where the check engine light is and one mirrored on the other side
there might be one or two more up top, i cant remember.
once you have it hanging free, it is only held in by the speedo cable.
lift the cluster up and tilt the top towards you (as if you were sitting in the seat)
you should be able to finagle it so that you can get your hand behind it and just touch teh clip and the cable will come off.
getting it back on is much harder, but once you've done it, its not that bad

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
Thank you. But that is exactly what I have done, thats how I always did it but it just seems like that the cable is too short and I cant get it far enough open to get in there with my hand or anything else. Thats the problem I have. At least now I know thats the right way to do it. I thought maybe at this car there is a specific spot from where to access it because there is nothing at all where I could get near to it.
I will just try it again. I not the most patient person so maybe this time is works.
Thank you. I let you know if and how it worked later today.

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
As I suggest in the link, remove the panel above the pedals. You should, with the aid of a flashlight, see both the cable and the cable clip. Trip the clip with a long, flat-bladded screw driver.JamesC

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
OK, I tried again today and I got it out. I used a long screwdriver and got to it from below, kinda where the key would be. Does anybody have any link or info about a plan of what cable is what? Especially for the gauges like gas and all that.

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
All the gauges except the speedo are controlled by the PCB on the back of the cluster, they are all routed to a single plug designed to plug into the cluster, the speedo is controlled by a mechanical cable, the one you were struggling with

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
Well, I am planning to make a custom cockpit with mainly those gauges on an aluminium panel.

I guess I gonna use new connections for each, if not I will need ages to figure out whats what. Anyways, at least I can take out the rest now and paint the rest of the car inside.
Thanks again for the fast and professional help!

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
just get a wiring diagram and then do it by hand, you will be able to control each gauge with the wires going to that connector, but you also gotta ask yourself if youre gonna run mechanical or electrical gauges, ive got a mechanical oil pressure, temp, and voltmeter, they just connect directly to the motor rather than using a sending unit
if youve got the $ you could just spring for the autometer setup, much simpler lol

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
I guess thats why I love 80s cars. I like it mechanical and to be able to change the tire without connecting a laptop
For the most I will use mechanical, especially for turbo pressure where I need to be 100% sure its right.

Re: Cockpit/Dashboard Question
well for the most part, the car is already set up for electric gauges, which are IMO better than mechanical gauges.
also, with electric you have the option of using a digital readout vs a traditional gauge, which can be useful for things like water temp, voltage, ect...
