speedometer

my 92 rs speedometer is completely inop. also the RPM gauge is working but incorrectly. I have a repair manuel that says the speedometer is plugged into the cruise control transducer ( cause its a standard ). I see the pic in the manual and i see no cruise control transducer or any signs of there being one under the hood. I do have cruise control and no it doesnt work but the whole unit is there and nothing is missing from it that I can tell. I figured that it was a cable that plugged into the tranny, but I see nothing but electrical connections to the tranny not cables. can anyone help me diagnose any of these issues so that I can get my speedo working right. I just want to know for sure where it plugs into so i can diagnose it. If its electrical I think it is the connector by the tail housing of the tranny but just want to be sure. Also I think the rpm gauge plugs into distributer and if all is well wouldnt it be the controller inside the cap that is probably the problem? thanks for the help in advance!

Welcome to TGO. The transducer is long gone, so forget that. Your 92 speedo is electric. Often the problem is the VSS located on the tail shaft of the trans. Since the problem is fairly common, a search, which is always a good idea on TGO, is in order.

Re: speedometer

Well after looking around on this site i concluded that I may be able to take the VSS apart and fix it by cleaning it out. Well I took the VSS out of my tranny (didnt know that it was gonna pour out tranny fluid!) and realized that it is a solid state plastic unit. So after cleaning up a big mess and putting the VSS back in I thought that I was just gonna have to replace the VSS all together. Well I started to wonder if there was a possiblity that the vss was even the problem at all. So I took my instrument cluster out and looked at the little circuit board that the speedo plugs into and realized the real problem there. The board had serveral components on it that were fried completely. So now at least I know what I need to do to fix speedo. This repair should also fix my inop cruise control correct? My RPM gauge is still not working correctly it reads way too high and I have seen on here that is not a uncommon issue.

Re: speedometer

Did these gauges ever work correctly since you've owned it? Just wondering if PO swapped in a V6 cluster or something. Just curious, I also have a 92 RS with 5.0 and 5sp and an extra cluster if that is your problem. Sorry don't know much of anything except how to remove and reinstall. Good luck to you How much higher is the tach reading anyway and where are the redline markings on it?
