LQ4 Torque Converter Removal
Is there an easy way to remove the torque converter from the engine other than removing the oil pan? I have worked on it without any luck due to the tight quarters and would appreciate some direction and advice?

Remove the starter. Unbolt the lower bellhousing and remove. Unbolt the upper bellhousing and separate engine and transmission. Just be careful not to allow the front pump to be loaded as the engine/trans are separated - in other words, pull them straight out with both being supported at all times.
Then you can unbolt the converter from the flexplate.
It isn't much easier doing it that way than unbolting the converter from the flexplate before separating the engine from trans. I happened to do it as I described above about a week ago because I was working in a storage unit and didn't have the right tools with me. I brought the engine only home and pulled the torque converter then.

Re: LQ4 Torque Converter Removal
Thanks. I worked with my problem while waiting on a possible reply and did discover removing the starter would give me access to the torque converter bolts. Now to get a 15mm socket on them and see if I can get the transmission removed from the engine.

Re: LQ4 Torque Converter Removal
I assumed you have a 4L80E, which might not be the case. If it is, it's as I described. If it's a 4L60E, it's about the same except for the part about removing the lower bellhousing (it's all one piece with the 4L60E).
But, either way, the easiest access is at the starter hole.
Oh, 4L80E has six torque converter bolts...
