With the heads I also bought all his valvetrain parts.
Custom bullet turbo cam
Aswell as a set of LS7 lifters, Manton 11/32” 0.120” wall series 5 pushrods, Rockers with trunion upgrade, valves, and dual valve spring setup with titanium retainers.
Also picked up a JEGS Chinese swap pan, actually very impress with the pan, I’ve hot tanked all the paint off and will add fittings for turbo drains and oil temp yet. Since the pan is identical in dimensions to the moroso, I ordered the pickup PN 24050 and will test fit it all once it arrives.

Took the car back to Iroc Custom Auto (Shop that belongs to my buddy James that painted the car) to get it polished
Finally moved into the show and somewhat setup.

Also, quick update on the engine.
Finally poured hardblok on the other side of the new gen IV 6.0L block
Cast iron intake valve seats installed. Need to bore the heads for the new 1.750" OD copper exhaust seats as they will interlock into the intake seats and cut out all the damage seen on on the cylinders similar to this one.

Not too sure how I missed this build after so many years, but I just stayed up late last night and read through the whole thing in one shot. All I can say is wow. Such an impressive build. Your knowledge and craftsmanship are incredible. The car is really well put together. Gives me something to aspire to one day. Keep us posted!

Some changes happening to the transmission, shorty planetary for gear vendors, gear vendors, new PRV in valve body and a few other small changes.
old PRV
Sent the torque converter back to PTC to loosen it up
Gotta modify the torque arm mount to clear the gear vendors
New to me planetary from hutch
new PRV assembly
Sonnax billet yoke for GV

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Engine and transmission going back in (This is mid June by this point lol)
All back together and its maiden voyage for the summer to the car wash.
Later that night. lol
That was the first weekend of July, Next weekend I took the car to Lethbridge for Street Machine Weekend. It was 37-38 degrees in Lethbridge that weekend, really tested out the cooling system in the car, never once ran over 200 and never missed a beat all weekend. Also put the 5.3 on the dyno for the first time and won the dyno competition. Made 998RWHP un-corrected which is roughly 1170rwhp SAE corrected.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Next I loaded the car up for Team Norths annual no prep race. Left work early on friday to get in on some testing friday afternoon/night. The track was what you'd expect for a no prep, starting line was surprisingly good, but anything after that wasn't... Made 3 test passes the fastest being a super soft 6.04 to the 1/8th, and when I went back up for my 4th pass... the 5.3 decided it finally had enough on the burnout. Engine stalled (or so I thought) and it had broken #6 piston/rod.
Ready to load up...
The hired help
RIP little 5.3

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Ended up buying an all aluminum 5.3 with the intentions of using it, but got ripped off and the engine was completely full of water.
So I pieced together a shortblock using pistons from 3 different 5.3's, rods from 2 different blown up LS3's, the crank out of the blown up engine, and a block from a friend, only thing I was able to salvage from the 5.3 that I bought was the 243 casting cylinder heads.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Plans for this winter include:
- New 6.0 engine with Lunati rods, CP pistons, Trickflow heads etc...
- Rebuild transmission(nothing wrong with it, just going through it while its out)
- Mini tubs
- Some fab work on rear suspension to change from a panhard bar to a wishbone
- Install new rear double adjustable coil overs
- Chromoly lower control arms
- Narrow rear 1" per side to bring the tires further away from the wheel lips
- New heavier springs for front coil overs
- Lower car more front and rear
- Change fuel lines to -12an feed and -10an return
- Install new cable driven fuel pump
- New front k-member
- Raise rack and pinion (will allow me to remove bumpsteer spacers on tie rod ends) It is also the lowest point in the front of the car and constantly hits things.
- New rear end center section, Switching from a 3.50 to a 3.89 gear, also installing a Moser Big pinion bolt through aluminum case to save weight
- Install safecraft onboard fire suppression system
- Install new spring loaded parachute launcher
- Hopefully new front wheels
- Also going to attempt to remove approximately 250lbs from the car. LOL
new rods:
cable drive fuel pump components
Rear coil overs and 225lb 14" front springs

Never less than impressive Charlie.
Still hoping to see this car in person one day. Perhaps a test and tune at Castrol should my work schedule be a little different than this years.
I'll be touching base with you and AMS this winter for some additional parts and machine work (I hope).

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
430ci all aluminum LSX, Dart billet CCW crank, Callies enforcer Ultra billet I beam rods, Diamond LS2K pistons with DLC coated pins, Warhawk aluminum block and warhawk ls7x heads ported by frankenstein. Hydraulic roller cam, Comp short trav el link bar lifters, 3/8" 0.135" wall pushrods, Jesel rockers, PAC valve spring package (175 seat, 480 open) Precision Metalcraft Short LS7 sheet metal intake. Very street friendly combo.
New turbos are Borg Warner as cast S472's witht he 83mm exhaust wheels and 1.10ar housings. PT3000 air to water intercooler mounted up front. Completely re-doing the turbo kit in stainless bros 2.5" stainless mandrel bends with a brand new set of 1 7/8 stainless up and forward turbo headers. New JGS 50mm wastegates aswell.
All of this will fit under a stock 91/92 Z28 hood with blisters. Also doing a complete set of 91/92 "aero" style GFX. Ultra carbon doors may be in the works this winter(heavy on the maybe) and I've also got a Optic Armor tinted hatch window for the car.
Transmission is getting is normal rebuild, Keeping the gear vendors, upgrading to a 10 clutch high gear drum, and a slight bump in line pressure, and a new PTC torque converter (14-45 stator for those that care)
Rear end is a Completely new Fabricated housing from bearings performance, billet currie big for housings ends, torque arm mount from chassis works, LCA brackets from Tin Soldier race cars, Coil over mounts from applied racing technologies, Re-using my 2 year old Mark Williams 40 spline axles, however being that they have approximately 1" of dead spline on each axle, I am going to narrow the housing 3/4" each side to gain tire clearance on the fender lip. Center section is a Moser Big bearing with a 10 bolt pinion support, 3.89 pro gears from US gear. Strange billet yoke and U joint straps.
At the same time as the rear end, the rear suspension is getting a complete re-vamp. New chromoly LCA's with titanium spacers, New custom built chromoly torque arm, chromoly wishbone with a titanium slider, re-locating the anti roll bar and ditching the heavy S&W mounts, Also converting to coil overs since the car will no longer have a panhard bar using the strange double adjustable coilovers I bought. Also mini tubbing the car to gain the tire clearance needed with the narrowed rear end.
New front wheels which are a set of Champion 15 x 3's to replace the heavy racestar 17's up front. Keeping the same 15x10 champion double beadlocks in the rear.
Next major change is the fuel system. Going away from an electric pump to a Magnafuel Pro Outlaw 1000 mechanical pump drive off the engine but mounted at the rear. This is accomplished by a waterman cable drive fuel pump system, New 160lb injectors will feed the engine (with 80-90psi of base pressure) and new Nylon braid fuel lines will get the fuel from the back to the front (-12an feed, -10an return) ultilizing my same Weldon large orifice regulator.
As far as safety equipment goes, a 7.50 cert cage is on the horizon, however like for next winter. For now I am going to run bars from the cage into the engine bay and tie them into the tubular front end. A safecraft 5lb onboard fire supression system is also going in the car, and adding a Spring style launcher for my parachute.
Will be upgrading the holley Dominator to the new V5 software with the addition of some new sensors for datalogging including 4 wheel shock position sensors, Hyperaktive G meter, Motion raceworks hall effect driveshaft speed sensors (to replace the magnetic one) Front wheel speed sensor, Turbo back pressure and a pre intercooler IAT. and I'm also considering buying the Holley Active speed managment traction control function.
Thats basically it for upgrades lol.
As far as Performance goals, Ideally looking for a low 1.2x or high 1.1x 60 foot, and would like the car to run consistent in the 7.70 range and 180-185MPH. With the newly acquired 4-500hp, and getting the weight down to sub 3400lbs from 3725, I feel its more than achievable.

Out of curiosity, what's your build time for something like this? Think you'll be racing in the spring?

Yeah the goal is to be racing again next year. Was intending on this year but my plans really snowballed and I spent most of the summer gathering parts for the new combo. Fab work is beginning in about a week starting with the mini tubs and then the rear end/suspension. I've already begun final machining on the new engine and should be able to start assembling in a week or 2.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Some of the new (or new to me) shiny bits
PT3000 air to water intercooler
Diamond LS2K pistons with some slight custom changes and a upgraded DLC coated pin.
Dart Center counter weighted 4" stroke crank
The center counter weights on the new crank hit some of the main webbing inside the block so I had to do a bit of grinding to make room for the crank.
20 minutes later... It fits!
After that I put the block back in the hone and removed the final 0.0025" of material giving a final clearance of 0.008" (which means its ready to party)

I know the feeling. It's been one thing after another with the car or other things. I haven't even made the time to see you at the shop and discuss a new shortblock (which I think I touched on last year at this time).
Good luck.
Good luck.

Long overdue update....
Decision was made to pull the car off the street permanently.
Putting the car on Methanol, ditching the Intercooler, cooling system, gear vendors etc. Chasing 4.40's in the 1/8th.
Plans are as follows:
Engine:
LS Next 2 tall deck block
Billet 4" CCW crankshaft
MGP pro 2500 aluminum rods
Custom diamond pistons 11:1 compression
Custom grind solid roller
Jesel belt drive
Brodix HIP'd solid BR7 300 heads, Ti intake valves, Inconel exhaust, PSI spring package.
1/2" head studs
Alan Johnson top fuel hoops
Manton pushrods
Crower steel rockers
CID intake
16x Siemens Deka 220lb injectors
Barnes 5 stage dry sump
As far as the transmission I'm going away from the gear vendors. Pump and valve body are getting done by Hutch, using one of hutches proven ringless input shafts aswell. Sonnax 10 clutch drum kit and a sonnax 1.58 gear set.
Heres a photo dump of where the car is at starting in december 2018 to present.
