My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Bought my 4th Third gen Nov 27 of this year. It was posted as a IROC with 305 HO and t-tops, ended up being a RS with stock 305 and t-tops. All I wanted was a V8 and T-tops so it really didn't matter to me. I have taken a few pictures of the car and have started to fix some things. I bought the car for $1,700; runs and drives just fine.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Pulled the driver seat out couple days after I got it because it was moving around a little too easy, pulled the carpet up and found that the floor pans were a little rusted out and the left rear bolt was rusted out of the brace. The driver door was all rusted out on the bottom. Took that off and took out the power options and went and bought me another door to replace it with. Transferred all the power options into the other door which was a manual door. Ive done this before so it was pretty easy.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
I took the new door and just set it in place to see how she fit and it was pretty close. The lines were pretty even. I have to remove some surface rust from the door but its a lot better than the one that was on it. The old door was sagging really bad and they ended up messing up the lock mechanism so you would have to set it before you could close it. All better now, that door was sent to the scrap yard today lol. The driver fender was pushed in just behind the tire so I had to bend it back out and pop out the dent, its pretty close right now, just have to finish straightening it out.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
I had these rims on my 97 S10 this past summer, so I knew they would fit the Camaro, they don't look too bad on it. They are 18's so thats the biggest I would go on these cars.

I hope that floor rust is just some surface issues. Looks like the outer sweeps on the doors let rain in and settled or something. Good luck on the resto, going thru the same myself.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
I have the rusted parts cut out already, haven't taken any pictures, but I had to cut back from the rocker panel about 6". I have time and patience and have repaired a similar problem on my last 89 RS I had. Shouldn't be too bad of a fix, like I said, I've done it before and I'm kinda handy in these situations lol, not saying I'm a master fabricator or master mechanic. The front of the rocker panel is rusted apart but the back half is solid. I'm gonna have to take off the front fender to assess the rust damage because I saw it was making its way that way.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Thanks! I just want to get the little issues done and repaint it in the spring. Maybe add some chrome to the engine bay and tint the windows. Its not very far from being like my last 89 RS that I had, I wished I never got rid of her. I bought me a set of grid taillights on eBay for $50 with no cracks and in good shape. Maybe buy a 3" cowl hood soon.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Well had some time tonight to work on the car. Ended up riveting and welding in the first piece for the floorboard. Here are some pictures of the progress. Gonna have to wait til I get back from Vegas to get the new rocker panel and complete the rest of the floorboard.

Ugh I hate rust! If your floor pans are that rusty I would check the other common rust areas too. Hope everything goes smoothly for ya.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
It was mostly the driver floorboard and the rocker. Just got back from Vegas so now im gonna start getting to work on it. Had to save cash for the trip lol. Im gonna tear out the rest of the interior and carpeting to check for rust spots. Im definitely gonna make sure the floorboards are solid. Shes not gonna be ran in the snow period. No more snow for this 3rd gen lol.

Keep up the good work man, I remember from another post that you said it had IROC decals on it, Oh well it's a V8 T-top car that runs and drives for a nice price.

Got one HECK of a deal on some 91-92 ground effects. I got both side skirts, both door effects, front chin spoiler and rear quarter effects all for $125! Just need the brackets and the chin spoiler needs very minor work. I'm gonna reinforce the chin spoiler just for extra strength. Thought that was a great deal lol

So your going to make it looks like a 91/92 car then? Are you doing the Z28 hood blisters?

Yea gonna make it have the 91/92 GFX and gonna go with a 3" cowl hood. Gotta save up some cash for that yet.
I got rid of that Camaro for a lifted Yukon a couple years back, I wish I never got rid of that car. I loved that Camaro lol. The dash-pad in this Camaro has a few cracks but nothing major like the other one.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Well since I got my full-time job, I haven't had much time to work on the camaro. I have made it out to the garage at my buddies a few times and have made some progress on the floor pans and rocker. I only have the gas door opening to fill in left and I can start putting things back together. The door that I bought is gonna have to be sanded down and some filling done.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Had to cut the seat bracket out of the parts car and make a custom bracket for some more support on the rocker. It works out really good, got it riveted and welded. Tested it out and shes pretty strong, im gonna poor fiberglass on the floorboards too so it will be even stronger.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Took the split rear seats out of my parts car and put them in my Camaro. Had to take the bracket out of the parts car and riveted it to mine, they work really good and are gonna work out a lot better than the solid rear seat! Took the driver door off my parts car and put it on mine. It was in A LOT better shape than the one I bought, plus it already had the door lock, ground effect, door molding and power window system in it! Heck yea!

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Tore off the rear bumper yesterday and found that it had been in a rear end accident, maybe backed into a tree or pole. The impact bar was bent really bad and the bumper bracket had been dented along with the back of the car. I had to pound it out a little to make it better. So the PO tried to take off the impact bar and failed, they took the bottom two bolts out on each side but couldn't get to the top ones so they just LEFT it on! Stupid idiots I tell ya!! So I got someone that has a impact bar and honeycomb for $50 for me.

It's not like I have to spend alot right now, just need the wether and time to do it, alot of light body work is all really.

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
I hear ya, im in the same situation. The garage I have my camaro at is a 2 car garage but has no heat and has a dirt floor and is 15 miles out of town. If I forget a part or something, I have to drive all the way back into town and after awhile it gets old. Im moving to a different place here in a couple weeks and ill have my OWN garage and will be able to store the camaro there. That will be a lot more convenient and better for me. Ive spent over $300 in gas just driving out to my buddies to work on my car in the past few months.

Nice, yea gotta have to keep the bike out of the cold/snow. I think we keep getting projects is because we like to work on them and keep changing/upgrading things. And they are usually cheaper to buy as projects. Lol. I couldn't see myself spending like $5k-$8k on a finished car. I would get bored with it too quick lol.

Made some progress on the Camaro. Got the rear impact bar on and painted. Filled in the holes for the quarter panels. Ground down some areas. Went to Cincinnati to get my 3" cowl hood, got it on and installed. Took out the gas tank in my car and my parts car, have to swap them out. Mine was all caved in and bent. My parts car had an almost new one so im gonna use that one. Pictures are attached!

Made some big progress today! Got the sending unit put back together and got the gas tank back in. Had to take off the sway bar end links to get it in but shes in there now. Just have to put new shocks in and bolt the brake line bracket back in and that nightmare will be all over with! Lol

Re: My 89 Camaro RS Build Thread
Been doing alot of work on the camaro, mostly body work in some areas. Had my water pump blow out on me the other day so now that led me to do some engine work. Ended up pulling belt off, that is in need of replacement. Alternator bracket is broken, power steering pump started leaking, upper and lower radiator hoses need replaced. I had planned to change out timing chain and cover, took those off and the chain had ALOT of slack in it. Putting new chrome cover on and chrome valve covers. Going to change out my valve seals while I am there. The camaro smokes pretty bad so hopefully that will fix that problem. Then my gas tank started leaking again, so have to change the tank out, AGAIN! But hopefully this will make the car run a little better!
