Re: New Member 1986 Z28
I like the car, and you remind me of myself quite a few years ago. In high school I had a '85 T/A, and then in college I had a '91 RS. One thing that I regret doing to the RS though was taking the whole HVAC system out. I used to say the same thing, it has two windows, but it got old carrying a rag in the car to wipe the window when it fogged up. I wish that I would have just installed the non-ac box instead. Just food for thought, it's your car, build it the way that makes you happy.

Got it pretty clean
Headed home...I HATE seeing it on a trailer!
Back it the garage, time to start smoothing!
The first thing I wanted to do was clean up where the battery box/canister mount met the frame rails....Got it scuffed up and Dad started welding

looks good, take your time patching all of the holes and smoothing them out and it will look amazing when you are done. under the hood is the easiest place to learn bodywork, most of your mistakes will be hidden by the motor once it's in. glad to hear you picked up the non-ac box.

Engine bay is painted!
Front cross member need some attention and since I could't afford a tubular one, I attacked it with a wire wheel and scuff pads, then Herculiner truck bed coating. I plan on doing the underside of the car too.
Motor work!
Camshaft going in
Dad helping get it lined up
ready for the timing chain
checking the clearance of the timing chain and the aluminum timing cover I bought
Looking good!

Timing cover going on:
Took a break from the motor and installed my new polyurethane motor mounts
old:
new $10 mounts just for the cases:
All you have to do is drill out the mount rivets and install the new bushings, they secure with a large zip-tie and are sandwiched when bolted to the frame:
These were tons of fun to bolt back in!

Looking good, I have a suggestion for you though, instead of sealing the gasket to the the block, like you did on the timing cover, seal the gasket to the cover. That way, in the future, if you have to pull it off, it will be easyier to scrape gasket material off the cover than the block.
Keep up the good work!

Re: New Member 1986 Z28
Johnny, thanks for the advice but the oil pan was already installed after I read it, Live an Learn!
More Progress:
Dad and I pulled the oil pump apart to have our friend weld the pickup on
Welded, cleaned, and back together, sorry about the blurry picture
Goin' on the motor!
Ready for the oil pan!
I went with orange on the block because I like the old school feel. Black would have trapped heat and made the engine bay too dark, and I didn't want blue for the same reason.
Almost time for the heads!

Johnny,
The cam cam with the top end kit, I don't have the came specs with me but I believe it has .488"/.510" Lift, The RPM range was from 1500-6500. The kit is rated for 410 horsepower but that was on a 9.5:1 compression small block. My motor won't quite have that compression and I probably won't spin it to 6500 but we will see!
Some more Progress
Since this car is going to see the Drag strip a lot, and we had to pull the tank to modify the fuel pump, we figured it was time to upgrade the rear as well.
Tear down:
This rear is For Sale now. 3.23 gears, Posi, Disc Brake

Thanks guys!
Dad and I have been hard at work getting the car together, goal is Ocean City Cruisin in TWO WEEKS!
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I am further along then the pictures show, but as of today, we have yet to fire the motor. That will happen this weekend!
Between school and busy weekends on the car I have not had time to post pics but I will get some more up soon.
Fyre Daddy: The overflow is a generic stainless steel canister from jegs
Here are a few pics.....
We got the old exhaust out:
And started test-fitting the headers, they are going to need to be dimpled on the drivers side

Awesome build! I love your attention to detail... I am going to be doing the same thing pretty much when I get back from deployment.
Why didn't you go with a bigger stall though? 2200 seems a bit tiny if you have plans to race it a lot.
Also, I spotted a red fox next to your Camaro... Is that one of your parent's car or something? Any details on it?

Re: New Member 1986 Z28
Thanks Guys!
As far as the stall, I went off recommendations from my Dad and my Boss. While I do plan on racing the car, it will also see a lot of street time and cruising as well as being driven to the track.
The red foxbody is also mine. When I stated having problems with the camaro's original motor(plus it was slow and I wanted something with a manual trans) and pulled it off the road, I bought the Mustang. My family is die hard Chevy so I kinda broke the mold but I have always liked foxbodys. It is a 93 Notchback, originally a V8, T-5, Torch Red, Black interior car. It currently has a Gt-40 crate motor with a Paxton Novi-2000 Supercharger and a Tremec 5-Speed (all came in the car when I bought it) Since then I have been up grading it when I can(suspension, street slicks, making it my own).I have run a best of 12.07 @ 120 in the 1/4 mile and I drive it daily.

Transmission: 700R-4

Re: New Member 1986 Z28
Update Time!!!!!
Trans is done and ready to go in.....new cooler lines from inline tube....lokar flexible dipstick....freshly bed-coated cross member
Craigslist SCORE: 12-bolt rear, 3:90 gears, posi, LPW diff cover,33-spline street/strip(user name plug) axles, beefy studs, C-clip eliminators, and a ton of suspension components
Sent it out to have new seals put in and pinion depth and backlash checked etc., time to scuff and paint
cleaned up nice
