'82 Camaro Built LT1 with T56 for AutoX
++++++++++++++++++++++++
New plan as title says, built LT1 with T56 all aftermarket suspension just scroll through
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Some of you may remember me. I have an '82 Camaro Iron Duke, with the saginaw. I have changed my mind on several occasions at what I wanted to do with the car. My first Idea was to boost boost the I4, but then we have the issue of needing to change the injection system with (F.A.S.T.) and the fuel pump, then the entire drivetrain and support the chassis, and then have another 5-10 in the motor and turbo to make it respectable and reliable. Then I discarded that idea, because why have a four banger when you can have a LSX for the same money making double the power.
The LSX was my plan...that all change with seeing the the LSX motors would only get a few passes on high boost at the drag strip.
The plan now is to build a mild 355 or 360. High 300's low 400's. Nothing too crazy. I plan on using the Saginaw for a while I just cant beat on it too hard . The car is mainly going to be for autocross and street use.
I have ran dirt modifieds for years and I got tired of working on them. So I decided to make the transition to asphalt.
Parts List
-Global West SFC
- Global West Wander bar
-UMI Suspension Package (Just came in) UPI-201529-R
-Posib Eibach Prokit EIB-3801-140 or BellTech springs
-Founders Relocation Brackets
-Founders Caster Camber Plates
-UMI or BMR Tourque Arm
-Energy suspension bushings
-4th gen Rear
-Excel-G Shocks and struts or AGX
-Lakewood blowproofbell
-Grant 12'' wheel
-Non A/C heater box
Thus far.
So far I am waiting for a nice day to pull the 4cyl out to get the bay cleaned up for the new heartbeat.
Here are a few pics of when I brought it home.

Not a bad looking SC, I like the Iron Duke cars, but not the lack of power of them.

Re: 82 Camaro Build
Exactly. I think they are neat things. But this one was leaking like a sive out front and rear main seal. The original owner was going to scrap it because he thought he grenaded the trans, when the only the shifter was loose. I also put a battery and it fired right up after it had been sitting for almost five years. The battery tray is the only spot from the damn battery. The underside is heavily undercoated and coated with oil.
Progress Update
I just got the UMI suspension today along with the drilled and slotted rotors for the rear. and I am going to be finishing up the 4th gen rear that got a few weeks back. It has the PBR calipers and is a 3.42 Posi with about 30k. I also picked up a brand new 4th gen rad and elec. fan with the rear for about $150.
I am hoping to have the car finished by early June at the latest.

Re: 82 Camaro Build
4Th gen rear I couldn't get the axle seal before I painted so I will have to got back and finish that before the new brakes get put on.
Quick shot of the interior after I bought.
Only dent on the car! The paint however is getting thin on top of the front
fenders which is not much to worry about for now
Out for a spin before I put it away for a face lift.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Well it has been an interesting past couple of days. I had started to rebuild the calipers and The one is frozen so I am going to end up ordering a reman. for the right side. I replaced the left side axle seal since it was leaking, I was surprised the bearing was still in good shape. I ended up going to the junk yard looking for the caliper so that I did not have to order a reman. caliper, well I walked out with two car loads of parts! I still did not get what I went there for. Any ways I picked up a rear spoiler, new window felts, a good power hatch switch that is not discolored, a cargo hatch and the back panel, rear sway bar brackets, new sway bar end links, a WS6 36mm hollow front sway bar, and a almost new Magnaflow SS cat back. The same place a GTA with the 9 bolt disc rear, with the digital dash. I hit the jackpot for walking out of the yard for around $150. It was a good day!

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Something cheap you could do is change out the idiot lights for gauges. I had the same idiot lights as yours. I found a set of V8 gauges that had the same style needle for the tach as my '84 dual speedo gauge. Since you have the 4 cyl, I don't know which gauges you would want. The V6 oil pressure reads 40/80 psi and the V8 reads 30/60 psi. Anyway, I wanted to keep my original dual speedo so the mileage stayed correct, so I swapped my old speedo into the new set of gauges that I bought. Then all you have to do is buy an oil pressure sending unit and water temp sending unit that's for camaro's with gauges and replace them on the motor. Swap the gauges in the dash and you now have factory gauges.
Mine with factory gauges now.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
I am more than likely pull the bulbs out of the idiot light and run mechanical gauges, I have a lot of old left over Longacre Accutech and Autometer stuff it's just a matter of deciding how I am going to wire them and my painless switch board into my aluminum shifter plate with the Acc switch . I am also going to put in a few hidden kill switches to the coil pack ground, fuel pump, and ignition for some security.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Well the weekend has been very crazy. I have gotten the stock exhaust out and removed the old rear end. I have also gotten my rear spoiler painted, along with the torque arm and drive shaft. I also touch up spots where the undercoating had been removed. The undercoating is too thick to try to be removed without taking the car to get dipped in acid. I want to graduate school and have a bigger garage and better funds so that I can build an Ultra Street or X275 drag car. Anyways I broke two craftsman ratchets and I had to go get my good Snap-On ratchet, I cringe every time I use it on the dirty stuff. I had some issues with the rear caliper mounting bracket, it had a slider pin froze which gave me a hell of a battle, lost two drill bits in the process. I called it a day after the second one and just ordered new pins, dust covers and mounting bracket from Rock Auto, they should be in by next weekend. I also ordered the Eibach Pro-kit 1" drop springs, KYB Excel-G for all four corners, new front grease-able sway bar bushings for the front, and the Global West Wander bar was on back order through Motor State. The wander bar and will be ordered through Atech in the next week or two. The Global West SFC's will be order as soon as I can drive the car down to our main garage to be welded on. The strut tower brace will also be a custom fab job, once I can drive the car down to use the welder.
Here are some Pics:

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
The sad part is the most expensive part will be the damn tires... I am not looking forward to buying them. I am crawling all over CL for the 315/35/17 and the 275/40/17. I found the 275's I may go get them, not sure yet. Brand Sumi's HTR-Z for 260, it seems a little high for what they are worth to me.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Well this weekend was pretty uneventful. I got the rear end plumbed for brakelines. I also got it installed, and rough set the panard bar. I had to remove the rear bump stops to install the tires when the car is in the air. I have also ordered the Wilwood proportioning valve. I started to get the rear hatch prepped to repaint the black outer trim, because the louvers had scratched it pretty bad and was just starting to rust. I need to sweep the floor bad, damn undercoating

I was debating on using the original Camaro bra just for the hell of it, because how many original bras do you see on a sport coupe? The original owner that I got the car thought that the bra with the firebird wing and Oliver's made the car faster lol.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Thank you.
This is just the beginning lol, will get totally stripped down to bare metal after I graduate from college, then will probably have a TT 358 Sbc, full cage, etc and still be able to drive it on the road regularly. I originally wanted to go the LS route but with only 10 head bolts the are problem-magic when under major boost. Plus I was told that the car will be a ginny pig for our race shop in the future.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
I have been moving pretty slow, I just got over the flu which was awful. I got the garage mostly cleaned up, I need to still do some more organizing, in it. I have to figure out where I will be putting the parts washer that I am bringing up from our other garage, it is pretty big, it sits on a 55 gallon drum the tub is like 4 1/2 ft by 3 foot. I am also bringing up another tool box once we get a chance its an older MBC Eldorado. Plus I am getting a fridge too. But I am waiting on my great uncle to finish redoing the shop trailer so that we can move this stuff. It may take him a week or three months . Anyways, I am going to look for some seats tomorrow at the local salvage yard. I was going to take a look at mostly the foreign sports cars to see what they have to offer. If I can find anything I may end up ordering the Sparco R100's for the car. I have yet to get notified about my sway bar bushings and my wander bar, that are still on back order.
Oh the rotors I got for the car are actually a lot better than what I had expected to get for $40 a piece. The are the Summit brand, that is made by Roto-Tech, they are cross dimpled/drilled and slotted. Which is much better then just have the sharp edge from being drilled like what a lot of the other drilled rotor have. Which helps with reducing the possibility of cracking. Only thing they do not have is zinc coating which is not a big deal to me.
I should be starting on building the engine relatively soon for it. It is a 4 bolt main 010 it's at 30 over now and will be taken out to 40 over then built. I am not sure of what entirely will be going into it because that changes day to day haha, it is nice to have an engine shop. But yet our motors are the last to be built, especially with some of our high profile clientele that we get.
Thank you all for the complements.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
I believe I found a set of seats at the yard, I may go get them next week. They are from a 2003 Celica GTS, I will try to get them next week end. my car was just not big enough to haul them. I got my air compressor finally wired in this weekend. I have attached a couple pics of the block and crank that I have along with the custom carb that I designed and built last year. I also took a pic of my bowtie that I am saving for when I build the turbo motor for the car, once I graduate. I hope to get started on the motor soon. It needs bored, honed, new cam, cam bearings. Not sure of head and cam combo, yet. I will also need to get a clutch along with a McLoed bell, shorty headers, y-pipe and some motor mounts.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Thanks a lot! I started on the rebuild on my front suspension. I am still waiting for my new sway bar bushings and my proportioning valve to come. The block will be going into the oven to be baked and then blasted in about two weeks. After that I will ready to start working that. I have finals next week. So I will not be working on the car until after, it sucks being an ME student, I actually have hard classes... I will keep updating as I go.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Well, I am done with finals and home for the summer. I have finally got the engine and trans pulled. I have the proportioning valve. I am currently sorting through the wires to see what all I am going to need to remove. I had also removed the front K member to clean it and repaired anywhere if needed. I am also going to make a SFC that will tie the kmember to rest of the car. I have also decided to build my own SFC's. Currently the block, kmember, front spindles and control arms are in the oven to be heated and then blasted. We have been going back and forth on what to do for cylinder heads. Our choices were at one point the vortecs, 441X heads, Pro-filer 23* All American, Dart SHP. We are now down to the SHP or Pro-filer, we may go with the Pro-filer. I plan to get pics up tomorrow.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
I started cleaning the engine bay, nice some of the paint starting to bubble, so I started chasing it down and will be re-doing the engine bay. The Kmember, spindles, and control arms are in the oven t be baked waiting on the shot to come in to run the machine. I also plan on finishing my half finished engine stand, for my motor so that it does not take up another one of the shop stands... I also got the rear window trim refinished.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Well since it has been well over a month I figured I could give a nice update. I have made some progress I planned on having the car done but life got into the way. I have finished the engine bay. The Kmember, 441 heads, and block have all been baked and blasted. The k member also got some gussets welded in.
Engine:
I am currently working on the heads so far I have gotten them machined for screw in studs and larger ratio rockers. They will be bowl blended for 2.00 intake valves and have hardened 1.5 exhaust seats put in. I will be using Ferrea Stainless valves in the heads. I have decided to use a small 600CFM carburetor for now, because I want the snappy response I will get from it plus I sold my 750 CFE machine body that I was going to use. I plan on doing a simple blue print cam from Comp, somewhere in the .480 to .520 lift range. I also will be using a Cloyes double roller chain. I will also be ordering a McLeod SFI bell for the car. I will be using Flowtech headers and y pipe part #16102.
Car:
The engine bay has been mostly finished. I need to put in the Kmember, make a bracket for the rad and LT1 fans, re-install the wiper motor, run the wires for the battery relocation, and go through and sort out what wires I need and do not need. I plan on having the car rolling by next weekend. My ball joints that I order from All Star should be in then along with my brake flaring line tool. The Global West Wander bar showed up a few weeks ago and its a nice product! Some of the things that I have not mentioned that I need to do include: drop the fuel tank to remove the charcoal canister line and drill holes for my interior hatch, get the front end assemble and aligned, replace old suspension bolts in the rear, make or buy a fan relay setup, fabricate sfc, fit MagnaFlow exhaust and tig weld it to fit. There are a few other things that I am missing.
Here are some progress pics:

Heads in progress I will have a better pic of them when they are finished. I will not show the bowl work, but I will tell you it is a trick we learned from racing Super Stock.

Very nice build so far, subscribed. What did you do to refinish the rear window trim?

sorry fpr the slow response, anyways I used nason self etching primer after it was stripped to bare metal then I used the professional grade Restoleum Flat black. I have had good luck in the past with it holding up.

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Well I been making some progress. I have put in hardened exhaust seats in the heads and bronze liners. mock up the exhaust to mark it to tig it back together. The car was rolling when I had dropped the rear. I ran wires to run the electric fans I am just going to run them off of a 3 way switch. I also started to Plasti-dip some of the interior panels they look really good! They look and feel like factory panels. I used 4 coats.
Here are pics.

Got a Garrett off of a friend for next to nothing so this may change this a little bit but its going to be fun. It is a GT37VA that is water cooled off of a 2007.5 LMM Duramax.

Awesome build man! Can't wait to see some more. I've got an 87 Sport Coupe that I'm working on as well as using as a daily driver. Good to see someone else building an SC. Love the ZR1s on the car. DO you have any pictures of all four on?

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
@mnug13
I do not have the spacers for the front yet that is on my current list of parts to get.
@Tibo
With a 93-97 rear a spacer is not needed for the rear with the 315 you may need to clearance a little with a bfh but it's not too bad. You may also want to roll the fender lips for that extra space so you don't cut a tire.
I recently just picked up some new parts for next to nothing thanks to CL,
Harwood 6" Outlaw Cowl hood, AJE tubular front K-member, and some BMR tubular A-arms.
I will upload some pics of how the 315's fit without spacers compared to the lip of the fender. I will also put up a pic of my new parts.

Re: '82 Sport Coupe AutoX Build
@ Tibo Do you happen to know what year 4th gen rear that you have? I have a '96. The 98-02 rears are about 1" shorter in overall length so that maybe your problem. The 275's that I have fit with no problem I would not have to do any work to the bumpstops or the inner wheel well.
Here is a pic of the 315's from the rear and new parts;

Re: '82 Camaro Autocross Build
Hello all,
I figured it was over due for an update. I just picked up two 1994 z28's. The one runs and drives, LT1 T-56. Needless to say that the swap will probably be happening in the near future. I hope to heave the engine pulled while I am on my Christmas break from college and make a standalone wiring harness from the factory one. I also plan on swapping the '82 belts out for the 94's and also the 98-02 ebony leather (no tears) seats that are in it. So I have my work cut out for me for a while. I am also parting both cars.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap
After cleaning the 94 Z28 (running one) I found out that it is a 1LE. I am still in shock that nobody caught this. The question is should I part it out because there is not much left to the body or underside. This is upsetting and it also has 170k on it. I am not sure what I should do with only 135 1LE cars being built that year. I would like to here some of your guys opinions.

Re: '82 Camaro Sport Coupe LT1 T-56 Swap
There are a lot of things wrong with the 1LE. The most devastating thing is the underside is mostly swiss cheese from what I can tell. The front shock tower is rotting away, the drivers side rocker is about gone, drivers side rear quarter is starting to rust from what looks like a panel repair done in the past, etc,. The car is also an R-Title from being a theft/collision recovery. Drivers side door material by hinges has gone soft causing the door to sag. Most of the original panels and interior pieces are missing or or in rough shape. Axle bearing howl in rear, front control arm needs a new bushing etc... The upsides the door panels are in decent shape, everything for the A/C delete (heater set up) works from what I can tell, the engine runs very strong, starts first crank. The T56 shifts well but the shifter bushing feels worn (nbd). Headman headers, 3in stainless Y-pipe, Hooker Aerochamber cat back; it sounds really good. May have an aftermarket shifter not sure. Handles very well.
