It looks like you are from my neck of the woods, I grew up in Wisconsin about 4 miles from Road America. In the summer once in a while we could hear the cars running.

Yeah, I would say that I live real close. Midwest F-body track days are only 6 weeks away:

OK, yeah, you're real close. I grew up in Plymouth. I joined the Army in '04 and have only been back a few times since, the last time was I guess 2011 for a few days.

Re: My '89 IROC
Alright, I guess that it's about time that I tried to do a thread on my car. I had been lurking on here for a few years, and then picked this one up last year while I was in Afghanistan. The car had been sitting at my parents house until I got back to the states. It's a blue '89 IROC with a LS1 and a 4L60E. The plan is to make it a quick weekend warrior that can still be driven daily.
I was crawling under the car in the last few days, and some parts started falling off of it. Weird.
There is also a pile of new parts that are waiting to go on the car, but this pile keeps getting smaller. Strange.
Once that stuff goes on, and I get the car from my parents house in Missouri to where I'll be for the next few years in Louisiana, I'll be ordering a 12 bolt and a set of track tires. The car sit's pretty high, I can crawl underneath it (barely) without it on jackstands, so I also have a set of V6 springs coming to hopefully drop it back to stock ride height. Wish I had some better pics besides the car in the garage, but when the weather is nice I just take the car out and enjoy it, instead of taking pictures.

Thanks 79bluebird.
Not much to update lately, haven't really had much time to do anything besides drive it a few times and wash it enough to get the pollen off.

I drive it from time to time, when the weather is nice. It needs some more work, mostly the tune needs to be touched up to get it to run really well. I really need to get back to the track on a decent prep day and see if it can hook.

Re: My '89 IROC
Thanks 86Z, it does OK for being a stock engine, besides the long tubes and tune. Currently my goal for the car is 11.51, right on the edge of needing a roll bar. I really need to figure out what I'm doing with this car, if it's a race car that sees street time, or if it's a street car that once in a while goes down the track. Right now the upgrades that I want to do aren't really in the budget, so I'm trying to trim my budget down for more car money as well as taking on side jobs. The bike is up for sale as well.

Re: My '89 IROC
So I picked up a clay bar and wax that I thought I'd try out. It's been at least 12 years since I last used a clay bar on a car, I forgot how much I don't like doing it. However, it was pretty obvious that the paint needed it. So anyways, the car looks pretty good right now and I thought I would go and get some pictures of it.

Re: My '89 IROC
If anyone is still paying attention to this, sorry but there isn't much to update. I had been busy building another car for a friend of mine, actually the blue '92 Camaro RS in a picture from a few months ago. He had paid for an LS swap, which was done very badly. I spend a few weeks building him an exhaust, subframe connectors, a fuel system and fixing his coolant system and harness. It was a lot of hours spent after work and on the weekend, but I finished it right before I had a 3 week obligation for work.

OK, here's about the only update that I have right now. I picked up the speedometer cable drive box and these billet AN line clamps, both from guys on MM. I want to say there are something like 8 of each the single and double clamps, and they came with a machined weld in nut similar to a nutsert. I just haven't gotten around to installing this stuff yet.
I also fixed a few of the pictures that went dead on the first page.

Re: My '89 IROC
OK, I've finally got something to update on here. My daughter came down to visit for two weeks this summer. She helped me change out the tires on the car.
She actually enjoyed rolling the tires outside as well as loosening and tightening the lug nuts.
After she had gone back to her mom, there was a car show in town. I went along with a bunch of the guys from one of the local car groups. Even though I entered, I didn't expect to win. I entered in the "Classic" category, because the only other category that I fit in was "Modern", which was full of new Camaro's, Corvettes, Mustangs, and Challengers. When I entered, there was only a '40 something rat rod Ford and like two muscle cars. No sooner than I entered, a bunch of muscle cars showed up, including an AC Cobra replica. I stood no chance, but I had fun either way, and some friends of mine took trophies home. The group I'm in won some kind of award for group participation.
I was tinkering on the car some not that long ago and decided the horns were too heavy. So they got speed holes and met the grinder.
Since we were off on Friday for Labor Day, a bunch of us decided to go to the track for the midnight drags.
A bunch of us from the group met up and convoyed out the three hours to Thunder Road, with me in the lead. The group is mostly import cars, with only a handful of domestics, but we are predominantly all soldiers. This was really the last outing we are going to have since a bunch of us are deploying soon. Anyways, here I am surrounded by the Fast and Furious cars.
The car did alright, but basically ran the same as it did this spring when I went to the same track last. I did the online calculator then, since they were only doing eighth mile, and it came out to 12.1. I wasn't expecting to go any faster this time out, since I haven't done anything to it since then besides wash it and drive it to work and back.

Re: My '89 IROC
All but the speedometer. Speedometer is manual, transmission has an electric drive sending unit. That's the reason for the speedometer drive box in post 113. The tach, water temp, oil pressure all work and are accurate. I have a bluetooth OBD2 adapter that I connect my tablet or phone to and can see everything that the computer is doing. Fuel gauge has nothing to do with my swap, since I'm still using the 3rd gen tank. If you want to use the 4th gen tank, there is a sending unit from a Grand Am or something that still has the correct 0-90 ohm resistance.

Re: My '89 IROC
I didn't do the harness on this car, I bought it already swapped. However, my friends car, mentioned earlier in this thread a few times, I did have to go through his harness in order to get it to work. The oil pressure sending unit, it's pigtail, and the water temp sensor and it's pigtail can be found with a little digging on here. I'll save you the trouble though, the water temp sensor is the 3 wire deal from a 98 Fbody. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...nid=493&jpid=5 and it's connector http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...nid=681&jpid=3
Here's a thread on how it connects. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...mp-sensor.html
The oil pressure sensor is even easier, black is ground, green goes to the gauge. Nothing connects to the computer. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...nid=535&jpid=0 and it's connector http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...nid=645&jpid=2
In all honesty, after working on Ryan's car, build your own harness. It's not that hard if you follow the pinouts for the computer. It's much better than the mess that I had, his car allegedly had the harness sent out to some company to be converted to a swap harness. It was a hot mess. There are plenty of threads on here about it, the best are written by Jon (Pocket). He built my harness, it's amazing. Clean and labeled roughly every foot.

Re: My '89 IROC
Time for an update, I'm once again deployed, which means that I have money to spend on the car, but I can't touch the car. It's packed away in storage waiting on my return, but I've started acquiring parts for the car.
So far I've picked up a set of Street Lites to match the front, 15x10 with a set of slicks, courtesy of MW66Nova. I also picked up a MS3 cam, a nitrous kit, a FAST 92 intake, 799 heads, breather can, Lingenfelter LNC-002 box, MSD window switch, triple gauge pod and the AC delete box.
Plans are to send the 799 heads to AI to get CNC ported and put them on the LS1 short block along with the MS3 cam and FAST 92 intake. I still need to pick up a 92mm throttle body and the 85mm truck MAF. I also plan to drop a little more weight, weld in a roll bar, and pick up a 9" from Moser.

Re: My '89 IROC
So it seems that an update is long overdue. I've been back from deployment for a few months now and have been putting in some work on the car. First was removing almost all of the interior and then dragging it to Maryland to have MW66NOVA install a 6 point rollbar welded in. It was a weekend at his house, with a full day of working followed by a 4th of July get together of some third gen enthusiasts that I can now call friends.
After I dragged out back home I spent a week and a half with my daughter, and returned home and started taking everything apart. Since then, I've gotten the engine back together and have fired it up. There are still some things to finish before It's driveable again, but that will have to wait for now.
Here it is before I dragged it out of the storage unit.
And then once I got it back to my house.
Before I went on leave there was a local children's baseball team doing a carwash, so I got them to clean off 9 months of storage gunk.
One of the many changes I made was to remove the air conditioning.
All loaded up and ready for the trip to Maryland.

Re: My '89 IROC
Rollbar is painted.
The new trans cooler is mounted. I changed the routing from going to the cooler in the radiator and then the remote cooler to just running to this remote cooler with it's own fan on a thermostat switch. The transmission cooler lines and fuel lines are now all -6 AN PFTE line with black fittings. Simplifies working on the car when I only have one size and type of line and fittings.
Started putting the interior back into the car and trimming stuff to get around the roll bar.
And this is basically how it sits right now. I put an air filter on the throttle body and fired it briefly this Saturday. It's loud and angry, but it needs a tune and won't idle on it's own. I'm out of town for the next few weeks for work, but I'll post some more once I'm back.

Re: My '89 IROC
If anyone is still reading this, here's an update with pictures.
We got the front end back on the car....
And then set it back on the ground. The springs need to settle back in.
The next day we rolled it outside to give it a wash. The car was pretty filthy. I still need to go over it with a clay bar, my garage is fairly small and the car couldn't get away from the grinder sparks.
My tuner also came over and put in a base tune so that it would idle.
Since then I've reconnected the rest of the exhaust. I've fired it since then and it really doesn't muffle ****, its still damn loud. We also raised the car back up, connected the rear brakes (which is almost its own thread with the fun adapting the standard threads of the calipers to the metric lines of the rest of the car), clearances the floor for the torque arm mount, painted lines on all of the suspension bolts, and measured for the driveshaft.
All that's left to get the car back on the street is to buy a driveshaft, top off the gear oil and transmission, finish the transmission cooler wiring, re-install the center console and radio, change the oil, drain and refill the coolant, connect the parking brake, and renew the registration. I'd also like to clean the engine and engine compartment as well.
To get it back on the track, I need to finish the wiring for the nitrous and the timing controller. That's really about it.

Where at in Georgia? I was stationed at Fort Benning for 8 years?
I post way more on the Mu11et Militia page on Facebook than I do on here, part of why I said "if anyone is still reading this". The other part is that this forum is dying off compared to what it was 6 years ago.

Re: My '89 IROC
So the car is running and driving and is at the tuners. I scored a driveshaft from Matt, mw66nova, for pretty cheap so I threw that in with a new yoke. It didn't fit with driveshaft loop, so I cut it out and have to weld that back in the car at some point.
The brakes were a fun ordeal. I was getting frustrated trying to find all the adapters to go from metric to standard, but then I had a brainwave of using AN fittings with -3 hose. I got a pair of 1/8x27 to -3 and m10x1 to -3 fittings and found -3 AN hose that was DOT rated for brake use. Once I got that installed I started bleeding the brakes. Remember I had already put the wheels on? I forgot that the new Wilwood calipers were 4 piston and have a pair of bleeders on the outside as well as on the inside. Eventually me and my girlfriend got it figured out, and it was very nice having her help out.
The rest of the interior got put back in without any drama.
I dropped the car off at my tuners house early in December, he's been making progress on it but there have been a few issues with it.
Here's a picture of it when we took it for a test drive and put some gas in it before dropping it off at my tuners house the next weekend.

Re: My '89 IROC
Wow, an update is fairly overdue. I had driven the car a few times and put on some street miles, including a cars and coffee event on base.
Not too long after, the same group of guys and I went to the track in Texas. I was looking forward to seeing how much the car would pick up with all the changes that I made to it.
I ended up only making two passes, but it ran a 11.2@121, compared to the previous best of 12.1. The car did have some issues which limited me to only making two passes, one was that it would pitch the belt mid track and the other was that it was all over the rev limiter on each shift.

Re: My '89 IROC
I've already addressed the belt throwing issue with a solid tensioner from ICT Billet, and I've been talking with my tuner about adjusting both the shift points and rev limiter and going along with me to the track the next time I go to race it.
Once I got the car back home I weighed the street tires and wheels and weighed the race tires and wheels and came out to a difference of 87 pounds, as well as the passenger seat which I removed at the track (which came out to 24 pounds) for a combined weight loss of 111 pounds.
So here's what else has changed since my last update. I ditched the power steering and gone with a manual S10 box from mw66nova. I also picked up a Kirkey seat and Racecraft seat brackets to drop some more weight from the car. I also got the driveshaft loop welded back into the car. In addition to the theme of using parts that have come off Matt's car, I also bought his BMR anti-roll bar.
Right now the goal is to weigh the car, as well to finish a few more things like the nitrous wiring and then enjoy it for a few months. Its looking more and more like I may be deploying again, so I'd like to drive it a little more often.
