Project joe dirt

So I've had one iroc before, and fell in love. My buddy wrecked my first one in 2005 and I've kinda been looking for another one here and there. Don't scold me but I got heavy into fox bodies for quite sometime but always had love for the third gens! Found this car on Craigslist seemed to good to be true. Ad read 86 iroc one owner car 115k transmission went out, and they started removing the motor and tranny for a ls swap, but ran out of money. So I go look at the car. Few things scared me on the car. A few wires were cut, but that has turned out to be no big deal, have them mostly repaired already. So I had to hunt down a good 700r4 or have one rebuilt. I picked up a 89 Chevy 2wd for next to nothing. Drove it around tranny shifts smoothly no problems. Going to start removing the tranny this week, have the stock tranny for the torque arm mount. Starting to rip into the 305 for a inspection. Plan on replacing valve seals, putting a new timing chain in, with lt1 cam. New water pump, intake and pan gaskets. Found some headers locally picking them up today. Now keep in mind this is a budget build. I want to get it back on the road and looking decent before I spend my money going fast. Bare with me as I will update this as work progresses on the car. I am beyond excited for this build!!

Secured the purchase of the camaro

Got her loaded, beyond excited to start this project

And got her home!

Re: Project joe dirt

more pictures to come this evening. Weather is kind of crap this evening. So I'll mostly be focused on taking the motor apart.

Motor ready to be tore down. Getting rid of the emissions stuff right away.

I Hope to have it moving under its own power soon.

The wheels aren't in the best shape. But I'm going to try and refinish them. I really like the wheels as well. Semper Fi Ron

Re: Project joe dirt

Little update, work has been pretty busy and I haven't got to my car until this morning. Got a few things done. Got the donor truck running well enough to make sure the transmission shifts. Transmission shifted great. So that's some weight off my back. Got a good 700r4 for next to nothing. Got the 305 tore down, it seems pretty gummed up. Weighing all my options right now. Should I rebuild the 305 so I can keep my tpi. This is a budget build. Buy a good 305, or buy a 350 and put a carb on it. I'm in between right now. But need to make a decision very soon. The budget is a major factor.

Donor truck we (my brother and myself) picked up for a good deal. Good shifting 700r

Got the 305 tore down. It's pretty gummed up.

Re: Project joe dirt

If you're wanting to keep the fuel injection, why not just use the tpi on top of a 350? It wouldn't take a whole lot to make it work.

I'd def go with a 350 if I had the motor out and had the money.

Re: Project joe dirt

Ok so I solved the engine issue this morning. I traded some work for a built 350. I now have everything. Just waiting on my water pump and a few accessories to show up I ordered this morning.

carb to pan Fresh motor. This is a huge weight off of me, and a big power boost to get moving along on this car. Just have to pull the motor out of a old Henry j project that never got finished. Here's a quick picture of the motor.

Re: Project joe dirt

Got the engine pulled, set on the stand and re arranged the garage for more space to work. Submitted my order for parts needed, and got the truck ready for the tranny to come out. I'll be doing some serious cleaning on this car this week..Just did a quick mock up with my stock valve covers. I'll update this more detailed as time permits. Still have a long way to go.

Re: Project joe dirt

Ok just a little update along with a few questions.. So I dove into the motor. And boy am I glad I did.. Had a rocker stud that had pulled out of the head. Found a replacement double hump and ran to pick that one up. Got back changed over the springs and decided to check the rod and main bearings.. Two rod bearings right out the gate were bad. Pulled the crank and dropped it off at the machine shop. It has a summit 1103 cam in it. The motors .40 balanced roatating assembly, flat top Pistons With 1.94/1.5 heads. I'm thinking of a different cam. Just haven't found one that I like. any suggestions would be great, and encouraged.

Well I haven’t updated in quite sometime, I still own the car. And have been working on it on and off. Biggest thing, had the 350 checked and rebuilt at the machine shop.

Re: Project joe dirt

Got the motor in and the car running last summer, added a set of roller rockers, removed all the tpi wiring and boxed it up. Did new brakes on the front, and got a set of torquer wheels that I’m not to crazy about. .40 350. Balanced, flat top pistons. Double jump heads (ancient) I know.
This was a pain... the engine hoist wasn’t long enough to reach with the front end. Had to come at it from the side.
New set of wheels.

Re: Project joe dirt

Girlfriend and I pulled the carpet for a deep clean, after a once over. We decided it was just trash so ordered a new carpet with the mass backing. It wasn’t as difficult as it was on a fox body, and the fit was great. Let it bake in the sun all afternoon while I was cleaning and prepping for the carpet to lay down. And then deep cleaned the front seats, not sure if I will be putting the rear seat back in the car or not. Still on the fence.

Re: Project joe dirt

Things to do. Get new headliner, sail panels, and sun visors. New steering wheels. And I’m looking for a original ball shift ****. I know a guy on here was redoing them some years back. Does he still do it? Has anyone used him? Also searching for a fourth gen rearend. After a few clogged fuel filters just from driving from shop to shop, I dropped the tank and put a new one in. I’m needing a new fuel sending unit as the one it came with has the plug for the non in tank fuel pump, so my gas gauge doesn’t work, and my old sending unit was rusty. I didn’t realize the plug were different until the tank was already bolted in and I was ready to drive it the 7miles home. I’ll get back to that soon. Crappy cell phone picture and low lighting in the garage does not help. Pictures do not do the inside justice.

Re: Project joe dirt

I’ve been looking at a set of rims. Along with searching on here about figment/backspacing. I found a really nice set within budget. But can’t find a defiant yes or no if they will fit. Stock iroc front brakes with drum rear. The wheels I’m looking at are 17x7.5 5x120 +35mm. Would really like to buy some wheels today. Hopefully have them on before the weekend

Re: Project joe dirt

I swapped out the rear drum, for a stock third gen disc brake rear end with 3:23 gears. same gears as the drum rear end. Added a borla Xs pro Muffler, got the stereo working. And I also had a double din bracket 3D printed for the car but no double din radio yet.. searching for window switches. as you can see from the picture the passenger switch has the trim busted off. I couldn't believe the price when I looked them up!! I will search the junk yard and try to avoid paying that price.

I like your work.

Personally, I prefer to see Electronic Fuel Injection (any kind of electronic fuel injection) on a Third Gen.

But still, you’re doing nice work.

Great work dude! Glad to see that you are enjoying the IrocZ after rescuing her and putting in so much work. My IrocZ (daily driver) is a '87 I rescued from a woman's yard after having sat there for ten years. Also just rescued my next project, a '83 CrossFire Z28. These old third gens are awesome cars, gotta love 'em!

Do you have any under hood pics now that it's all completed? Always love looking at a good Chevy small block!

Re: Project joe dirt

Was at wal mart walking away from it, couldn’t help but look back and snap a picture!
Newly acquired parts! Don’t know if I’m going to use them on my current short block. Or build a 406. I Got a pretty decent deal on the parts, and I could t pass them up. I’m excited to see what I can do with them. I will post the flow numbers this week.
I will snap some tomorrow, still trying to make it better every day. I will upload a picture of my double din bezel. I need to get over to the passenger side and change that header gasket.

I bought a set of aluminum head castings that came with valves, Locks, and comp roller tip rockers. I’m going to put them on the flow bench at school, and then decide what cam and order my springs, also need to order rocker studs. All the parts including the castings are brand new. obviously the Weiand intake is not new.

Re: Project joe dirt

I’m going to start gathering parts for a small block 400, I put the assault heads on the flow bench. And this is how they flow right out of the box.

127@.200
185@.300
222@.400
243@.500
241@.600

lost some air at .600 lift, I’ll work on them and flow them again once I get a flow goal, and a engine combo figured out. But overall I was impressed with the head. It will be a budget build completely. With some decent parts. Over all I was impressed with the heads for what I paid, and never really hearing of assault until recently. I will snap some engine bay pictures this weekend while I’m changing the header gasket, and tighty up the engine bay

I do plan on driving the car from Houston Texas, to Mid Missouri for thanksgiving this year. I’m really looking forward to road tripping the car. I attached a couple pictures of the double din I got printed out. I was very pleased with how it came out. I printed three if anyone is looking for one.

I just acquired a 1990 IROC and I’m looking at a double din radio as well. That’s a really nice piece you got made. How much do you want for it?

Great job saving that IROC. I’m trying to figure out what to do with my aging 305 TBI. I’ll keep following this thread for your progress.

Re: Project joe dirt

Sorry for the late reply guys. Holidays and all have been busy. Car made its trip to Mid Missouri from Texas and back with no issues at all. Minus the oil sending unit that started leaking profusely. I averaged right at 17.5-18 mpg. I am very impressed with the car. Right before thanksgiving break we had a dyno day at school. While I wasnt impressed with the numbers. It still made me smile.

As far as the cup holder goes, I ordered it off of eBay a pack of three for $5 but I didn’t pay attention to where they were coming from, and I ended up waiting three weeks for them to get here. By far my favorite interior mod and makes life easier.

The double din bezels I posted in the marketplace on here. I love mine. Still waiting on my double din to show up in the mail. I will update that hopefully very soon. Hope everyone is having a merry Christmas with their families! I’ll try to post my dyno video.

Re: Project joe dirt

Is it me, or is something wrong with that graph?
I thought HP and TQ always cross at 5252 rpm.
That graph has them crossing at about 4050 rpm.
Someone please explain.

Re: Project joe dirt

Alright gentlemen, so I installed a new sending unit today on the car to get the fuel gauge working properly. Fuel gauge works great. But now I’m not getting any fuel up front. It’s a brand new 1a auto sending unit. I put a line right off the mechanical fuel pump and shoved it in gas. Sucks up the fuel fine. Hook every thing up after back feeding all the fuel lines. Still not sucking fuel from the tank. I’m at a loss. I checked all my lines made sure they weren’t wrong or kinked. Replaced two rubber lines underneath the car that were dry rotted. Still nothing. Pulled the sending unit again made sure the pick up line wasn’t bent or kinked. It was fine. I am at a complete loss here. And pulling my hair out. Any suggestions? I’m still working on it right now. Thanks in advance.

Re: Project joe dirt

Still moving along with this project. I’ve replaced the Ttop seals (using Fairchild kit) lowered their car with vogtland springs and replaced the shocks and struts with Tokico illumas. Just added 4thgen leather seats this weekend. I will get more detailed in the next post.

Tokico shocks and struts

Stock height vs Vogtland springs.

Cleaning up the newly acquired seats. Hopefully add a little touch to these.

Air gap intake fits nicely under the hood (without hood insulation)

Still chipping away at it.

Cleaned the filter element, and put the breathable lid on. Still clears the factory hood. 3inch drop base with rpm air gap intake.

Re: Project joe dirt

it is a tight fit with the lid having a bit of a rise in it. the wing nut touches the hood slightly. with the flat chrome lid it cleared fine.

Nice little score from the local pick apart. Gonna get it home, and watch some videos on cleaning and semi restoring this thing. I’ve wanted one for a long time. Never could justify the price of them. Can’t wait to get it in my thirdgen

Thank you zman1969.

I got the radio home and took it apart to clean the eye and look it over. Looks great. I need to get a antenna adapter then I will hook it up, and unlock it. Here’s me taking it apart cleaning it and then putting it back together.

Re: Project joe dirt

Got the Delco loc radio installed over the weekend. Very happy with it. I ordered a factory harness adapter off of eBay. And it was worth it. Complete plug and play. I couldn’t be happier with this radio. This is the link for the harness I used. Since my car is a 86 it had the older style factory plug. https://www.ebay.com/itm/114291163641

Clean factory look.
