Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
Our fabricator Andy Stapp wrapped the exhaust up this week while Matt mocked up some air ducts to cool the oil tank and route air to the filter while still being able to use the turn signals. He also drilled and tapped an AN fitting to the factory steam vent since our usual aftermarket kit would not clear the MSD AirForce intake.

Wow! Tell Matt the T/s turned out great. Did you make the CF duct in house or is there a part number I could squeeze out of you? I still think you should talk to Kyle about those skinny boy headlights for the car even if you don't use the internal lights as T/s... Projectors> incandescent That baby is gonna be loud with all those pony's only being muffled by those chambered mufflers after the xpipe... I like it!
Kicking butt and taking names on this one. I'm really happy with the further attention to detail that I think we either weren't shown or wasn't there with the last "test car".

Thanks Brandon, I'll let him know! As far as the duct, being in NASCAR country, we were able to "acquire" that piece from a friend. We could mention the lights and see what he thinks, and loud is what we like! Our "White Monster" 5th gen runs the same exhaust setup and sounds amazing!
Take a look at http://skinnyboylighting-com.webs.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/SkinnyBoyLighting/ I'm positive he will work with you making the lights as custom or unique as you need them.

We have more updates coming right after this, but we'd like to thank John over at Trackspec Motorsports for the hood louvers! These pieces are very well crafted and while they are intended for flat and IROC hoods, they were too nice for us to not make them work on our early Z28 hood! Matt also went ahead and made a fiberglass tray to keep any rain water off of the engine and transfer air out of the louvers.

Along with the louvers, a lot has been going on here. Test Car fabricator Andy has been building a mock up splitter to help gain some more downforce. Matt has also created an air box to keep all of the air coming from the duct headed directly to the MSD Airforce intake.

Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
Again things are looking great!!! I was just talking with Shipka last week about installing the Track-spec into his early Z hood. Kept saying all it is, is a little extra body work man, and here you guys got the pics to prove it. I'll have to make sure to tag him when these pop up on other medias.
I'm happy to see a front splitter big enough to meet the width of the wheels/tires. Makes it look crazy huge (especially in wood), but really a requirement. Are you gonna build a duct to bring air up through the radiator from below, or are you hoping you'll have enough through front??? Can you see if Matt is willing to throw that Alumn impact bar in his carry on luggage and bring it to me... I'll trade some of CO's finest beers lol... Since your not using it
I gotta say I really like this V2 car so much more than the last one. The time you guys spent re-thinking the project has payed off so much with little touches being done in a manor that 3rd gens nerds like me can really get excited about. Kudos!

Loud is good except for those tracks that have sound limits like NCM at 103db, Laguna Seca at 93db, and San Diego at 92db. Those 3 would be why we have 2 exhaust systems for ours. Stealth mode when we need it and louder when we don't.

Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
The only track that we have run recently with sound issues is NCM as you mentioned. We attempted to quiet our C3 Corvette and that didn't seem to work out in the long run, but we do run sidepipes. I guess we'll just see what happens...

Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
We scraped by at NCM due to suspension issues keeping the car from going WOT. We were at 101.7db with the loud exhaust at the time. Quiet exhaust is down to 95db now with 2 more bullet muffles to put on at the tips to see if I can get it down to 92db. The car sounds neutered with the quieter setup on it though.

Progress continues this week...
Our C&R radiator is in place and the nose will be receiving a face lift to fill the gap on our splitter...

Wow I thought I was only one who notice that small detail on modifying front chin as soo
the shape kinda bothers at some angles as it angles upward and doesn't match well with side rocker but it's designed so air can reach rad in stock form if it where to be angle down more would block some air flow
Super dope mod

Love what you guys are doing. Keep the pics coming. I'm gonna be pissed if you guys can't figure out how to get this thing out to the west side of the country for an event. I'll take the but* kicking just to run with it!

Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
Yes I have thought about also incorperating the splitter with 91 chin into 90 and or bolt on splitter with a more downward angle to match level of ground like above and then maybe a splitter like 6le that bolts up easily and can take damage and be easily replaceable
I'm surprised no one had came out with new modified rockers with more update modern touches seem like would be easy to bring to market
Can't wait to get back in game just waiting for the right time

I always have wanted to graft the front section of 91-92 front chin spoiler to the 85-90 as the newer ones come out a lil further and lower. Thought it would be a cool mod, that would get people scratching their heads. This does that too lol!

How do you think the metal frame will do for front impact compared to the original bumper bar or is this car only for track use? Just curious

The car will be street legal, although its primary purpose is racing. The new frame has a crash bar integrated into it, so it will be plenty safe for front impact.

Just found this thread. VERY COOL build. Any info on the wiper motor and how it will be wired?
My build has wiring that is starting from scratch so I am trying to find a clean solution.
Thanks.

We missed last week, so we will be updating you a little earlier today and will also be back tomorrow with a few more photos.
As Matt finishes up the nose, you can take a look at the crash bar and splitter brace structure. Also, our fabricator Andy has created and installed easily accessible brake lines as well as stainless steel fuel lines to feed the Baer 6R brakes and that MAST LS7.

Amazing build. All those brake line bulk head connections seem like potential leak locations, no?
very cool idea.
love the ss fuel line. Wish i could do that, but flaring would be impossible by hand, at least with tools i have.
did you use anything special to clean the underside so well.
and thanks for the wiper link. I will be picking one up when i get to that step for sure.
very cool idea.

All of the bulkhead locations are using Brown & Miller AN fittings rather than double flares, so leaks are not a concern in that department. As far as the underside of the car, we had the entire thing blasted once we tore it down so as of right now it is all bare.
When you are ready for the wiper kit, just give us a call!

When you say it uses AN fittings to seal, Doesn't it still need a flare on the hard ss line to hold the ferrule on? Isn't that another leak location?
just trying to learn more since i am in the planning phases of my build. Don't think i will be able to pay to have my car blasted. I do plan on wire wheeling the entire floor inside and out to ensure i have dealt with any rust spots.

As promised, more bodywork updates today...
Matt has cleaned up the modified nose a bunch that will meet the splitter. He has also begun fabrication for the hood pins.

AN Brake line fittings... I wish I would have known about how easy it is to work with AN fittings years ago. Its the only way I would build a system now.

Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
We'll throw in a quick update...
The car is still being torn down for paint/body, but we have a handful of photos of the roll cage. We were able to salvage a majority of it from the old car, but Matt has created some new pieces to be welded together.

The car made it's way into the Project Shop yesterday for paint and body. Here are some final photos of the roll cage since it's all welded up now...

I am going to be welding in a simple 4 point soon but am concerned about interior plastics. I know I am going to need to cut stuff up, no big deal, to deal with the mini tub I did. Do you guys have any plans for interior plastics yet that pass by the main hoop?

It would appear that you've abandoned the idea of fender flares...?

So do I.
It's gives credibility to the 3rd gen platform and helps us all as owners.

The body is currently getting a touch up blast at the local blaster before we lay down the epoxy. Something we haven't shown you is the removable tow hook cover that has been implemented into the front bumper. We will be using a screw-in style hook.

Re: Detroit Speed 1988 Camaro Test Car 2.0
Will you be offering this for cars factory bumper supports? IE: does it attach to a factory frame rail or to the tubular piece you built to replace the factory crash bar? Now that certain events (USCA) require tow hooks having these available for both Camaros and Firebirds with factory frame attachment options would be nice.
