there is plenty of clearance behind the rear wheels.

Converting between backspacing and offset can be difficult at times. For my 9" wide wheel, it's 9" wide from the inside of each lip and pretty much 10" wide measured from the outermost parts of the wheel. This means that if my wheels were 0 offset, it would effectively have 5" backspacing. Since they actually have 4 7/8" backspacing right now and just barely clear the tie rod, pushing that edge back another 1/8" is pushing it. It's right on the borderline. If there are wheels you really want to get with those specs, I'd say go for it and get some very small spacers (1/8" to 1/4") if you end up needing them.

Going to a larger diameter wheel won't hurt any clearances as long as the overall diameter of your tire is still the same (25.5" - 26" for our cars).

Here are pictures I just went out and took of the inner fenders. The lighting sucks, but you get the idea. Notice no bumps from where the tanks mount and the top lip of the strut tower was smoothed too.

I've been wanting to trim down and put loom on those wires for a while now, and I want to do something about the nasty looking alternator and its bracket too. It's so hard to get EVERYTHING done that you want to on a car.

Nice Jeremy, So you have no windshield wahser tank anymore and what of the Overflow for the radiator? Do you just route the hose to dump on the ground since it is more or less a short trip car now vice long distance/show car? I was thinking about that as well. i do not need the windshield washer unit either.

I have a small black overflow bottle strapped to the passenger side of the radiator, you really can't do without that because the coolant expands when it's hot and needs somewhere to go. It's only like a quart and could stand to be a bit larger, but it works. I don't have a washer fluid bottle. I was planning on hiding a small one, but haven't gotten around to it. Honestly, I probably wouldn't ever use it anyway.

How did you mount your batery in the back? Is it in the car or under the car on the outside. Pics of that by chance? Thank you for your time by the way.

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

it's mounted behind the little storage door on the drivers side in the hatch area. I got a kit that included a metal tray and the cable. The tray is bolted into the rear frame rail that runs right under there and it's held down with a plate across the top and 2 threaded rods running down (all part of the kit). I'll have to see if I have pictures showing when I installed it. You're very welcome. I spent a lot of years on here reading and asking questions so it makes me feel good whenever I can contribute.

You should get the wheels' spokes painted the same color. Similar to the black or golden spoke of the stock birds. Would really accent and match the wheels a lot better.

P.S. i actually like the original color too!

It is not an enclosed kit?
A friend of mine relocated his battery in his 69 camaro. He now has a lot of corrosion inside of his trunk around the battery, going into his second restoration. Technically your battery is in the interior of your car and not the trunk, therefore the fumes that a battery gives off must be vented outside the car. The stuff that vents out of a battery is flammable and not good to inhale if the car is closed up.

I am interested where you got the kit and some pictures.
I plan to relocate the batteries on both of my 3rd gen T/A and Formula.
Hopefully it will give me a starting point.

You have done an Awesome job on the '84.
Stripping it down to bare is the only way to go to keep the detail of the body.

I bolted the tray down with 2 bolts into the rear subframe rail and also put one small bolt on the outside front corner. I have since replaced the optima redtop with another basically identical redtop. I really don't know much about batteries, but I don't think this type will cause corrosion like a standard lead acid battery.

Thank you very much BlueZee28. I really love what you've done with your car, so it's pretty cool to hear you complimenting mine. I didn't love 82-84s when I found this one, but the price was right. I've since gained a great appreciation for them and wanted to stay with a mostly original look. 15th anniversary cars are among my favorite f-bodies of all time.

thank you! the 4th gen carpet is a 95% fit. I had to cut new holes for the front seatbelt receiver and I cut off the back part that goes behind the rear seats. Other than that, the only other thing that's kind of noticable is that the dip in the front passenger floor isn't quite the same. The 4th gen carpet doesn't dip down as low as the 3rd gen floorboard, but it isn't that noticable other than when you're putting it in. I do plan to get all new 3rd gen carpeting for it at some point though.

I stopped at the parts store to get amber bulbs for the front side markers, but I saw their cleaner's van outside and when I asked, he said they just closed. I said no, '84 and he looked very surprised and said it looks good and sounds like it has some *****. Even though the interior isn't 100% together yet, i'm stopping at a local car show tomorrow night and I'm interested to see what kind of reactions/comments it gets. I'm kinda liking this nice looking f-body thing :driving:

my camera isn't very good in night mode. I really wish that last picture came out better. I'll probably take some more tomorrow night at the car show with a better background. I got the passenger seat, headliner and door panels in after the daylight pictures.

The spoiler is a reproduction made by Wings West. I believe they refer to it as a wrap-around style spoiler. It was originally available on the 1984 Firebird 500, which was basically a "special edition" created by one dealership.

Wings West also makes an almost identical one for 3rd gen Camaros.

It was nice to have helped with the build at first, but I'm sad I haven't seen it yet with the new paint. Maybe this summer, it is possible that I'll be up there for the big Pittsburgh vs Buffalo drags May29th at Lucky Dog City in Erie PA..... That is of course if I can get a rear and truck and trailer by then.....

That came out awesome. Love the wheels... Definately need to lower it though. Id say inch in the back, inch and a half in the front. maybe 2.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I don't get why there are so many lowering comments though. It's already lowered with an Eibach Pro Kit. Maybe another inch lower with the sportline kit would look good, but another 2 inches would put it on the ground! I still want it to be drivable too. Maybe the angle of the pictures are making it look higher because I was kneeling down to take most of them.

That car looks amazing! I agree with you lowering the car looks show room cool but it's not practical for the streets.

After looking through this thread again today, I realized that I didn't post many of my favorite pictures from this past summer after I got the bird out of my driveway and drove it around town.

This was at an awesome f-body/mustang event featuring all generations. Very fun time.

this one is with my brother in law's 81 Monte with a BBC and an awesome true dual exhaust

I don't know if this is a good suggestion or not, but make the clear sidemarkers tinted to match your grill deletes. Would that look better?

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

maks10, we have TONS of snow here in Buffalo, NY! All those pictures were from last summer. I can't wait to take it out of hibernation when it looks like that outside again!

knightmarecs, the lenses are actually smoked rather than clear. They do look kinda light in the pictures though. I guess i'd have to hit them with some VHT Niteshades to darken them up more. I might do that, especially since I plan to tint the windows this summer.

Nice I have snowflakes on my '86 silver bird, and I don't care for them, but I hope mine looks as good as your dose when I'm done

this car is so beautiful I'm sitting here stunned.

Have you ever considered swapping out the taillight lenses for the GTA style?

not at all. I meant it. we all have our opinions. I think it would look a little cleaner with more modern looking taillights, and you (and the owner apparently) like those. It's all good man

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

thanks guys. I did think about swapping in the later grid style taillights and even have a pair on a shelf, but I decided to stick with the original style. They're going to get polished and get the firebird emblem and "PONTIAC" lettering done in silver at some point. I think that'll make them look a lot better and I like the early 3rd gen/late 2nd gen feel of the car with those tail lights and the snowflake wheels.

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

i wasn't going to say anything, but the dull, flat surface of the taillights were why I said anything at all.

You have a BEAUTFUL car, maybe the best looking 3rd gen I've ever seen, seriously, but the taillights look a little neglicted and weathered. no offense

polishing them with compound would probably make them POP

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

thank you very much 58mark. There's no doubt that the tail lights need attention, and at some point they will get it. If after polishing them they don't look much better, then I'll reconsider the later year taillights with some additional darkening done to them. And you wouldn't believe how good it makes me feel to have someone say I might have the best looking thirdgen they've evern seen. I can't accept it as true because I know all the little flaws mine has, but it still feels really good to hear it

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

I had a seperate thread about adding a magnaflow catback and getting the windows tinted, but I might as well add it to this main thread. I can't wait to have an update with the taillights redone, but it probably won't be until next summer.
