Re: Picked up a new toy today MSE T/A

one of the previous owners did a targa top on it and it is in bad shape the top is broke the plastics that form the edge are broke. so my question is this if i buy a hard top or t-top car and swap everything over it's no longer a mse correct because of the vin so what i would have to do it the roof conversion to either a ttop of hard top roof ? by the way it is 82-138

Agreed, pretty cool bird.

As for the 3rd gen Targa, there was an 80's detective show (Simon & Simon) which had a Z28 with a Targa top. There's some pics in this thread from last year. Scrolling through, there didn't appear to be a hard top for it, just a canvas soft top.

Re: Picked up a new toy today MSE T/A

That targa is a Steas top. Do you see a label in a door opening or glove box stating the "conversion meets federal standards" and was done by Steas or "ISSI"?
Keep in mind that these Steas and Mechum conversions were (probably) contracted together by the Pontiac dealer that ordered the car. Consider the targa as an original component to the car, not some conversion done by a previous owner. Steas only contracted with new-car dealers, not private car owners. Hopefully you decide to restore the targa.

This car was uber special (and expensive) when new.

Yeah, specific MSE parts are hard to come by. I've got car 82-055 and have been trying to find MSE center caps. No luck. I have the git kit totally intact unistalled in the orig boxes. Nice score by the way. You can contact Dennis Mecham at Mecham Performance. He can answer a lot of your MSE specific questions.

Re: Picked up a new toy today MSE T/A

i have "MR" center caps that I reproduced 8 years ago. They are identical to the originals (silk screen on alum disc 3- color) . I made 25 sets and have several sets left.

PM if you are interested.

Re: Picked up a new toy today MSE T/A

I thought Mecham still had some of the spoilers left... He is in AZ, might see if he has any left.

Might have some other parts too...
