Yep, you heard it here first folks. Lost torque converter lock up on the way home, and also the car would NOT cool down. Even on the highway in the cool night air I had to keep the heater on full blast just to keep the temp barely down around 220*.
Car has no power, I don't know what is going on with it, but I have a battery of tests I'm going to run tomorow. Compression, cooling, and the trans all need to be figured out. Hopefully its just a busted T-stat that is causing the heat problems. And since the trans cools through the radiator, it may be affected by the engine heat too.

Car: American Iron Firebird
Engine: The little 305 that could.
Transmission: Richmond T-10
Axle/Gears: Floater 9" - 3.64 gears
That makes a pair of us then. I lost 3rd gear in my 700R4 at the end of the 2nd session at Autobahn on Saturday. Just flairs up and won't go anywhere.
Time to put the T5 in

Got up, started the car and moved it to the flat part of the driveway. After it warmed up (boy did it warm up! 220* really quick), I checked the oil level. The dip stick was BONE dry. Not even a smear of oil on it. Now I'm scared ****less.
So I get a light and look at the dipstick tube. Making sure its seated all the way. It was. So I said ****, and added 1 quart, waited a few, and measured. Just the tip of the stick had fluid on it. So I added another quart. Still just the tip was wet!
I'm like WTF, how'd this happen. 1 week ago it was fine! At this point I said screw it and shut it down while I thought for a bit. After a few I started it up again and drove it around the block. Came back, parked it with the engine off and checked the fluid again. I was 2 quarts OVERFILLED!!!!!!!!
I don't understand. The dipstick tube was seated and I checked several times after it had warmed up.
Decided to say **** it. I shut it down, and then called Tim since he was bringing my Jack back anyways and asked him to pick me up some oil, a filter and a new thermostat.
Did the oil/filter change.
oooohh, the oil is NASTY. No metal particles on the magnet though. I guess if i really want to know I'll have to cut the filter in half and look at the filliment.
But it was BLACK. And i mean BLACK. When the car started over heating yesterday boy did it over heat. It was nearing 260* on the gauge when I shut it off. On the way home it wouldn't go below 220* even in the cool night air with the heater on doing 70 and 80mph.
Think I found the problem though. The t-stat is a really funky design that pretty much blocks the flow of water to the upper radiator hose to a minimum. I'm going to find a different t-stat now, so for today and possibly tomorow its going to be a "no thermostat" car.

I'd definitely change the t-stat and maybe also change the coolant.
Do you have a trans cooler on the car? I have a B&M 19,000 GVW cooler lying around that I used to use on my car, withstood 11.0 n/a passes. It's over in Franklin Park.
I'd also make sure your fans are coming on.
