Help! Advice needed on where to source a junkyard 350..never bought a motor..

Hello!

Im giving up on my tempermental tpi and I am in the beginning phases of a 350 swap and am looking for some advice...any help would be awesome!

1. Any ideas on the best place to go to get a carb'd 350 (4 bolt preffered)?
2. What is current typical cost on a junk yard 350?
3. Any other tips for getting this motor? I am going to do a complete tear down so gasket condition and such does not concern me much..just never bought a motor before.

Whats so broke about your 305 that you'd risk going to a JY 350?

If your engine is running right, and you have no mods, do all the bolt-ons, and drive happy. All the bolt-ons will make a big difference in torque, and a minor increase in HP.

If you are wanting a 350 that much, have a 350 shortblock built and do it right so you know you can put heads/cam into it later.

The short answer is I think I'll get more power from a 350...from what I have read on here and elsewhere..is that modifying a 305 tpi will not produce as big of noticeable gains as doing the same to a 350, proportionately. I'd like to start with a junkyard base for cost alone and throw heads and cam in before dropping it in...although on another thread there has been recent discussion on the 305s potential that now has me back at square one with my plans for this car..I have headers and exhaust with cutout and no cats right now..looking to bump up the power more from there but at a loss for direction to go.

While thats true, you can do several bolt-ons that will be compatable with a 350 later. Full exhaust for one will give a nice boost. A CAI will also provide small gain.

The TPI bolt-on parts themselves will provide a good gain, but those i consider money wasted because they ultimately limit the RPM potential and power of the engine. Woudl be better to move to a Stealth Ram.

You wouldn't get the most out of all of these mods, but all of them would later drop onto a built 350 with good heads and be perfectly happy.

You would see solid gains without having to get into the chip like you would if you put a cam or heads on the car.

If you've got a budget there is nothing wrong with a full bolt-on TPI car be it 305 or 350.

SLP's go pack back in the 90's would put a Speed Density 305TPI M5 car into the 13s without impacting drivability at all.

I wouldn't be to scared picking up a junkyard engine.

My preference would be to find a late model vortec 350 from a 96+ truck. Anything that was remotely taken care of should be in decent enough shape to use for awhile.

Also you can still find lots of TBI 350 cars in the yards as well.

Just whatever you do make sure you can take it back if it is junk
