'glass hood & hood pins?

I seem to remember something about hood pins being required when running a 'glass hood at an NHRA or IHRA track. Anyone know for sure if it's true?

No pins here, running a bolt on hood.

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

Good idea to run some sort of hood retention with a fiberglass hood, too easy to strip out the fiberglass and yank that hold down out. Seen a few hoods at the track blow open due to this, not sure if it's a rule....if it is, it's not enforced often.

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

I've never seen such a rule. You can use a factory fiberglass hood that uses OEM hinges and latches and it doesn't require hood pins. You could also buy a bolt on replacement that also uses OEM latches.

The main reason for using hood pins or Dzus fasteners is to remove all the excess weight of a factory latch or hinge system.

my reason for running them is extra security when i'm running 126+mph. i have both the OEM hood latch and the hood pins.

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

yea, my WS6 has a factory one, and it seems that there are a lot of exceptions for the rules for factory pieces. I just put a bolt on on my '87 and kind of like it looking clean without pins or other latches, but could have sworn there was something about it.

May end up having to run pins, I don't know that I have room to keep the factory latch.

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

My factory latch is long gone. I run the typical hood pins on both sides but also run 2 Dzus fasteners across the front to help keep it sealed up better. The scoop grabs a lot of air at 100+ mph. I can see the back of the hood lift about 2" by mid track. It's still attached to the factory hinges so it won't go anywhere.

X2 You might be surprised how much a fiberglass hood flexes at high speed. If you look closely you can see crease marks in a lot of fiberglass hood where the corners flex if you don't pin them down.

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

I have a 2" down induction fiberglass hood using the factory hinges and latch. It also has two hood locks in the front the hold it down nice and snug. I've never experienced this hood lifting before or maybe just have not noticed?

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

my SS hood came apart the top piece of fiberglass separated from the bottom and flew off at 140 I talked to hawks about maybe it was a bad hood and they said it was to old and no pins

IT got some serious air too and landed on the side of the road without a scratch (weird) I rebonded it and pinned it

Thats why i want to get pins. Not sure if i could install those aerocatch ones myself but those would be pretty slick.

Is there an easy way to keep the hinges and pin the back?

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

huh, I guess the other reasonable question is where to put them on a 'bird hood where you won't cause stress cracks in the corners where the headlight doors are?

hmmm, is that an issue with the birds? havent though of that before.

i have pins in place of the stock hood bumpers just behind the headlights, and have no issues with cracking on the car.

Re: 'glass hood & hood pins?

What hood do you have? do you have a piece of hose or something on the pins to act as a bumper in that spot anyway? I don't really know for sure if it would or not, I obviously haven't tried it but I know that my bolt on harwood is already showing some cracking in the gelcote above the hood hinges and I don't even have any struts installed. I kind of expect it to try to crack anyplace where you might end up with some flexing.

The easy answer would be to put 2 sets on where all 4 stock bumpers are, but I don't particularly want to deal with 4 of them.
