My auto x street build
Well, as things seem to have turned out, i found a guy willing to trade me a 5.3 that is in my TA for his 91 B4C police package RS...that being said, he was not wanting to do the deal till i said he can keep the 91 vette 5.7 that he already said smokes a bit and the 5 speed, so he changed his mind. It needs some TLC from the looks of it, but i always wanted a B4C car, i stoked. Manual windows and the works.
It will be getting the nose and GFX from my 89, so it will not look like a 91 from the exterior, but i am not searching high and low for the aero GFX. I do not like the sweep gauges, i will deal with them anyway.
So, the research begins. I have the thickest WS6 swaybar for the front that was ever made for these, hope that is a good thing.
My main concern is the 4.8 i will use, at 7800 RPM i am not sure if it is a optimal setup for Auto x, maybe for road racing, but i will deal with it. This is a manual trans car as the 305 being long gone evidently making it not numbers matching, i will be killing the fact this was ever a TPI RS from the show room.....or police department i guess.
I was thinking the larger brakes were a plus, why wouldnt they be. Just need to see what carb i will use for the little engine that hopefully will. A holley in the corners? I have no knowledge if they mid hard cornering. All strange territory to me basically.
Hope to get damn good fuel economy and be able to still sound great and look better than before while cutting some corners pretty hard. So it begins...
Ah yes, catching hell from the late model LS guys for carbing LS engines and then hate from my third gen lovers for butchering a car that most would love to keep TPI, i am most hated.

Re: My auto x street build
Looks like a good starting place.
If you want to part with just the door piece of the aero GFX let me know, I need at least one side(have to check which one, but would buy both if ya want). - I have both rocker sections but only one door piece.

It is going to peak at 7400 or so and stretch to 77/78.

Yep, seeing as it is a street car and will be auto x once in a while, i am not seeking optimal engine combination for running it for events only, otherwise, i would probably do a 5.3.
The goal is to get another third gen to replace the 89, make it sound great, rev high and be able to do the auto x events when i can.

Budget, 4.8s are stupid cheap and the short stroke allows higher revs. Not to mention, I will also be going for fuel economy.

She has a touch of cancer on the driver floor board by the frame, pretty sure I can patch it up. Going to see if there are any other surprises.

Sounds like a cool build. I don't know about the most hated though. My car is a 91 Z that factory had the L98 and I tore it all apart.

If you dont mind, can you share the costs of your build? I'd like to know what sort of budget it takes to get a v8 hit 7k rpm and still manage good fuel economy

Re: My auto x street build
The 6.0 in the 89 RS I just wrecked managed 22 on the highway, hit 7200 all day. 17 mpg last I checked beating it and getting stuck in traffic, cruising at 80. Now we go smaller cam, carb, 70 less cubes...cannot wait to see.
6.0 was:
Engine:700
Cam:250
Pushrods/springs:300
Intake:270
Ignition:310
Trans was:900
Carb:250
Something like 3000 to go fast. Now I should be looking at
4.8:400
Ignition:310
Same Trans and intake off of 5.3 I am trading for the car
Carb will be about 100$
Going to probably say hell with it and run it without a cam just to see how it does, just because I have a spare 4.8 in the garage my little brother isn't using. Cam, lifter and springs will be 600 minimal later.

a friend of mine has a gto with an LS2. the heads have been cut a good bit, and it has a set of rockers in it. fast intake, kooks headers. made around 420rwhp with the stock cam and has gotten up to 31mpg on a trip. i believe it peaks somewhere around 6k. muuuuuuuuuuuuch better setup than mine. drives/idles like stock but flies.

Re: My auto x street build
Tried shifting the 6.0 at lower RPM, did nothing to help, went slower, ran fastest shifting at 7000. That does. Of mean it was peak power though. Hit 7200 every time I drive.

Yep, allot of the supposed car guys assume you shift at max power, do not understand max average power in the curve.

Got her delivered yesterday. From what i can see, the couple rust spots will be replaced by panels from the 89 RS. Figure i might as well use what i have right?
She was a highway patrol car from up north, so the salt did some work, nothing i am scared to fix, but it is there.

What are you asking for the 5.7? When I get a T56 from my buddy, I don't know if I'll want to keep my 305 or not.

Should be sold today for 300$. Another offered 400 but I already had a verbal agreement for the first contact, told him I would hold it till today. I am a man of my word, so told him I would give him runner up if the initial buyer breaks his agreement.

Re: My auto x street build
Got a hand grinder on the way so I can port the 853 ls1 heads and hot the variable speed router to give me the desired control. Sold the stock heads for 120, ls1 heads were 40. Still waiting on a guy with a mustang to lmk if he will well so I can fully fund the project after flipping it. If not, then it will not be done till next year. But I will keep hustling. Have cash to get the 6.0 into the Trans am. Will sell the 6012 so I can get a 6010. So, not as much as I like.
Decided white with black hood, mirrors, rear deck and rear spoiler. Should look great.

Re: My auto x street build
Sold the 4.8 heads, got some 853 LS1 heads, probably going to mill them .030-.040. Started porting them today, used to use pneumatic air tools. Found a Chinese electric grinder with elongated shaft, i still have my hearing and no air compressor to bother me and wait for it to catch up. Used a variable speed router to control it and slow to a usable speed.
But, the work seems better with the extra control, i am no pro but i do work that is free to me and makes more power. Going to use the edelbrock carbed Ls cam, will need a Performer RPM intake as well. The Vic Jr will work for temporary.
Here is some pics, looks better in person but gives you a idea.
After some castrol super clean:

The tool for the job:
They have a 2 inch valve over the stock heads, so that is why i choose them. I know i may lose a bit of compression but most will be back after milling. This is not a power house so it is fine. Plus i like bragging about 87 octane, LOL.

Lol, I have done a few sets for others, charged 300 for my time. But I only work LS heads, call me picky. Iron takes forever too, so even if someone brought
me 99 6.0 heads I'd turn it them away.

The 4.8 all the way to the LS7 have their place, a 6.9 is the common power house for cost effective swaps where power is a main concern. I will miss driving the 6.0 with a stick but the 4.8 will be a fun experiment.

Well, started ordering parts. Edelbrock 2215 cam should be here today. Springs, locks and retainers came in. Need to finish the other head, drop them off for a valve job and mill them .030-.040. Head gaskets are in as well as head studs. Fixing to buy a new millermatic 211 welder, so life is going to get easier. Buying crap is easy, finding motivation to work on it is a issue with all that has happened as of late. But, ball is rolling.

good to see you jumping back into this project.. Sure if you can get some of your buddies to help wrench with you it will be a welcome distraction and good for you. Good luck with the build and keep posting updates of the cars progress.
I've also been thinking of setting my car up for Auto X.. Nearest 1/4 mile track for me is about 90 miles away and I'd have to drive through NYC. So I'm also leaning at taking a try at Auto X which they do a lot closer to me in some large parking lots.

Well, I have a ways to go but after I get the welder it will happen very fast.
Have a friend selling me a 2000 10 bolt with 3.42s. Should be better than the stocker that has only who know how much abuse.

Well the edelbrock cam advertised at .050 was 220/224, the cam card says 220/220. Guess we will see how it does.
