Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Dan did my SBC stepped headers with the Brodix 18 degree head pattern, coated inside and out. about that price.

6 years later they still look great and get the job done !

he's done a lot of headers..and all have good things to say.. the only pain in the butt part is having them shipped out to me for test fit..then sending them back to be Coated..then shipping them back to me...they will have more road time then My Camaro ...lol

still thinking on how I want the exhaust to exit the car..in front of rear wheels with modified nascar boomtubes (1 ea side). or?up over the rear. and into turn downs on ea side.ya cant see..(I don't like the look of pipes sticking out from the rear)

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

The further back you run the pipes the quieter the cabin will be, if that is a concern at this stage for you.
My headers just dump under the car, for a track car I saved over 100# by not having an exhaust system!

To knock the dBs down a bit I installed car chemistry 4" collector inserts.
For a car I seldom drive on the street this works for me.

Loud pipes save lives, JAJAJAJ LOL !!!

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

well got the eng paid for.($23,000+). and shipping the last few things off to Scott Shafiroff Racing.
cost over runs. as I wanted a belt drive. aluminum block. shaft rockers. and a few other things.. I supplied
Oil Pan aluminum
Oil pan studs
Oil pan gasket
Billet oil pump
Oil pump drive shaft
Arp pump stud
fuel pump block off plate
Oil filter adapter/bypass block off
MSD Distributor (locked out)
Comp Cams Composite dist Gear (comp cams)
intake modified to my needs with 2 sets of gaskets (just in case)
fitech duel TB power adder set
linkage for the fitech set up
was going to send canton racing Valve covers. but need to tig baffles in them so will hold on to them for fitting/set up.
gaskets ran $50..lol a lot of other small parts march pully kit..snow balling like always..

http://www.shafiroff.com/chevy-pump-...wg-twisted.php

still need the headers..(dan lemon headers$2000) (carbon fiber drive line $1200) and the (ATI th400 $4200)converter?

the last 3 items should be in by sep..

If they are building the motor, why do you have to supply anything?

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

All the small parts I send in takes a few bucks off what they supply..and I get CLOSER to 100% no left over parts.

I don't Have to supply anything..BUT.

the steel oil pan they use I did not like.. take it off the list of parts used..saves me money..I then supply the pan I want to use... Did this with a few parts. as I was sending my intake set up to them to start with..even with shipping the parts to them I saved money..not much. but I got the parts I wanted to start with..right from the start.. the eng its self. with out the parts I sent in came to just a tad over $23,000 shipped. all I added was a few dress up parts and bolt on stuff..if I let them just do what they do/ use the bolt on parts..I would just be taking them off on this end and not using them.

this way Im only getting stuck with a set of valve covers I will not use..as I want the holes up front. not one in front ..and one in back..like all the ones on the after market..was looking at a set of GMPP covers..but at $700 (15LBS) I had to pass..as it is. the covers I am going to use (Canton racing) runs $270. but I get them. the way I want them...had to polish them (sorta) and have to add baffles..but I got what I think will look good..

like at the start of this. it was a cast iron Dart Block. but I added/upgraded to the Brodix Aluminum block. add $3500 to the build price. add a jesel belt drive. add another $900. TAKE OFF Oil pan removes $150.. by the time I was done..it cost a bit more. after all if Im going to spend the money on an Aluminum block. I don't want a steel oil pan.. or cast iron oil pump..and so on and so on... it all adds up.. how fast do you want to go with your street car.. as this is still a pump gas eng.. this same set up they make to run with E85 puts out close to 1115HP. I don't run E85.. but can buy 55gal drums of fuel..to help out with the Nitrous...

in the end its dyno tuned and sent to me.. I them plug it in..with less parts to take off..
keeping my fingers crossed to still be in the 900hp ball park on just eng. I could work with that..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

And people don't understand that the engine in my car has a replacement value of a minimum of $20,000. It's doesn't take long to add up all the small stuff plus the labor to do a lot of stuff to the engine. My heads alone are worth around $5000 with custom valves and guides plus all the port work that's been done to them and they're still not the biggest and best heads available.

Now go look at places like Racing Junk and see turnkey superfast cars going for $60,000+ and you'll know why.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

my intake set up
fitech $1900
intake itself with mods $900
linkage $50
2. 1" spacers $30
2 nos plates $200
polishing $450(bling bling)got to have the bling bling

this is a tad bit more the a single 1150 carb and a single plane intake (what shafirof uses)

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

I would have figured you just tell them what parts to put on it since its your motor and then they will get them, but i guess they dont do it that way. Sounds like they just stick with their crate motor package standard parts and make you supply

thats how i had my motor done back in 09. Granted it was only the short block but I specified parts

they can get any part ya want...to any eng style ya want.. I had a larg credit with summit..and I wanted to use it.. I also made my own intake..not them..so if I make my intake I have to send it to them..and at the same time I used my summit credit...and sent them my parts...
Sure I could of just told them what I want. and they would put it together.. but that's now how I roll...lol.. anybody could do that...but then you have what anybody could order...I wanted polished ss 12 point intake bolts..ss 12 point head bolts..I wanted the exact pan studs to go with the pan. the ATI super damper they supply...all I did was use a credit.with the shipping cost to send the stuff to them.. I saved $65 on everything...but I did save money.. as they do have a mark up on all the parts I sent..all the other parts are a better price then summit..expl..ATI damper BBC $295(machine to fit in that price).. summit wants almost $400you get to fit it..... (this is a upgrade over the base damper suppled with the base price 615cid bbc) base price $15.995. by the time I was done my eng was close to $24.000 shipped.. plus another $4800 in parts I sent.. if I went to 14.1 on the compression ratio I would be at close to 1200HP with a single carb.in the 1150 cfm ball park..lol not going to do that..its not a race car...right?
they do make and offer boosted eng packages for less money then I spent on my eng in a NA package..if I wanted 1500HP it was in the price rang..when you get past $24.000. you can make it easy to make lots of power...lol

at this time Im also sending back to summit a $500 intake I had them send out to try it out..and the ports are just to small...
Sniper intake.. would be a nice intake for a stockish 427 to 454bbc...not much more then that with runners the size of a small block...

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

on a side note..my intake set up..came out to the same lay out as holleys did..right down to my rod linkage fit..and carb spacing to runner.. the thing they did. that I did not do. was tig the 1" spacer plates to the intake top.... I left my intake top flat.. I also left my inside intake base flat. sort of like the accel super ram. and like the tunnel rams..I hope I have enough plenum Volum.. I think I do..dyno will tell...lol

6700 rpm is a nice peak point for that many inches. Must have a pretty good cam and head package to support those rpms. Short intake runner helps too i am sure

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

update..so the eng came in with the HP I wanted 892Hp on pump gas.. and 912Hp with a hot mix 108oct unleaded ..this is without spray..so I know we can get it to 1100hp with a small 250hp hit..and im sure the car will be under 3300lbs with me in it... land rocket!
adding NOS blow out plugs/plates to save the intake and parts (trying anyway)

a lot of parts still coming in.. a Radiator.. a 2nd one. as I wanted AN fittings (no hose clamps) so I had one made & polished with 20AN fittings

orderd 3 other thermostat housings to see what one would fit.. metzer..moroso..brand 3 brand 4...and in the end I might make one.as I think the 20AN 90deg fitting sits to tall..I also orderd a 20AN 120deg fitting to just tilt the hose down a bit..
so now I also have a 2nd Radiator im not going to need...

I was going to just tig 20 AN fitting to the unit I orderd..but I found out they would make me a Radiator with the 20AN fittings installed (O ring) so hell yes.. and have it polished also..also having a polycarbonate air cleaner made with a 3" tall air cleaner..to fit under the hood..as the billet aluminum unit you see up top..is a bit small..

as its over 12" wide and 21" long and im having it made so its more forward..so the back of the hood clears..with out trimming (I hope)
done in clear or black..Im thinking of shooting it in body color..

reshooting eng bay before install. have everything I need now. but the drive line & headers.. getting/ordering that when eng and tranny is in..adding a few more bars inside the car to make the track happy.. Dan Lemmon's headers have not come in yet..still need to cut holes in inner fender...got the templets for the cuts..want the headers in hand before I make any cuts. thinking of ordering a plastic eng block for mock up... so no not together yet...but the plan is by spring..2019..

did order a set of the Kirkey seats covers & rails...just in case I like the fit better the the recaro profi's I have now..but I orderd to wide at 20"..lol will send them back and get the 16's..as the 20's look to wide to fit...don't know what I was thinking..just wanted to use up the credit before they sent me a check...lol..
16" wide Profi Recaros..just fit the way I wanted..
so shooting for spring and looking to get it into the 10s...

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

headers are at the Coaters getting coated.. fooking forward to getting the car set up..not liking the thought of cutting holes in the inner fenders..
I ordered and paid for the headers back in Oct. just before I went to SEMA 2018.

but ya got to do..what ya got to do..

Not sure why they have to go thru the fender? What size primary did you end up with?
motor plate mounted?

i just built a set that go in underneath just fine and dump in regular location like sbc headers. 2 1/8” 3.5 collector but could fit 4”. Pass side primary cylinder 2 is a separate tube tho to install thats vbanded in

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

I orderd a set of 2 1/4 primary tube to a 3 1/2 collector.. this is what Dan Lemon offers.. keeping Fingers crossed as to them fitting the UMI K member.. was going to buy a 2nd K member for dan to Keep. as he did not have a UMI K member to work with.. but after looking at the unit he has to work with..they should work..fit the same..

eng will be in the stock location..no set back/low or anything.. UMI was willing to get a base K member to dan for good price..as I taked to them..this I would let dan keep for a jig. he has one now for the 82/92 camaros.. was also going to buy a plastic eng for mock up.. but my head parts are .600 taller anyway.. and Dan Lemon knows this and Has don't them before..

So I don't know why he takes some tubes into the inner fender like he dose.. but they make power.and I did not want to Take away from what the dyno numbers came it at..tube size.
also wanted the work of art thing going on..not to take away from anybodys work.. but have seen others like Ed Quay. and did not want to go that way...as I want the car to Look good.. AS WELL as fast..just me..its not a race car.. would love not to cut the fenders..

Yeah if using a k member with engine mounts it would be much more difficult to fit things. Plates made it possible for me. Curious to see how they turn out

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

wanted to be able to do oil filters and starters without dropping the headers..this was part of the plane..so I think the cutouts are part of the plane..this is a $2150 SHOT in the dark on fitment with the UMI K member..fingers crossed..( I was tired of looking for parts) and making deals..lmao..going on the ...IT LOOKS RIGHT... it should fit. thing...

ITS COLD out side my shop is cold... parts are stacked deep..not joking.. sold off a lot of the small block stuff.. shipped out a lot of parts Monday..
on a side NOTE: have been off work for the last 4 months..as I was Injured at work.. there falt not mine..and needed Surgery to fix..what they did to me..paychecks are still coming in. and will be.. till Im fixed/better Pre DR orders..so nothing to do but shop for parts (don't need any) and chrome plate parts. still doing...
a company out of CA sent be the brake booster parts (taken apart)Free.. so I could have them chrome plated.. and master polished. dropping them off this week with the Heater box and a few other parts to be chromed..(over the top) with the chroming..I know..but what the hell..bored!
I then send the parts back to the guys in CA and they will build me a new GM booster/master cylinder for my Camaro..
my shop is a Mess Parts every place..looks like summit blew up...picked up some more shelves to Organize parts..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Sounds like a good plan. Much easier to do adjustments on a mockup than in the car.

I'd love a set of over the frame rail headers. Mine would have to be custom made because I use motor plates and the engine has been moved backwards and lower than stock. The current headers I use prevent me from moving the engine back any more. The front frame rails taper inward behind the engine and the primary tubes have no more room. I'd also like to lift the back of the transmission higher up to have it pointed at the diff yoke but the headers are almost hitting the floor already.

The car is nose heavy and I have no problem lifting the front wheels so moving the engine back a couple more inches changes a lot of things. A good setup should have the front of the engine inline with the front spindles. Production cars are not like that.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

so the headers will be in today. Started mocking up a few things .found none of my starters will fit..oops.. GMPP small starter..nope..MSD nope..this came after I was installing the Moroso eng mounts. and could not get the lower mount bolt in on the pass side..the oil pan has a roll to the outside..making it tight for a standard type 3/8x16 x 3/4 bolt to work..had to use a header bolt. (smaller shoulder) to fit past the pan edge.. so after I got past that I was like..lets toss a starter on the pan..have some brand new stuff. to try out...NOPE!..lol.
the pan is notched for a starter..just a short stubby one.. going to call Moroso and see what they..(whos starter) to buy.
see the small notch for this pan. starter location..

its about 2" to short for the body of any of the reg mini starters...

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

talked to moroso.. they told me the powermaster 9500 starter was the ticket..there are a few places making this type of starter..but looking at the 9500 and the way ya can clock it..and knowing the nexed thing could be the headers..im going to order it today.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...a/instructions

on a side note: this was my falt.. for not looking closer at my set or parts from the start..I did not think ahead about the starter fitting the Pan..Untill I was fitting the Moroso solid Motor Mounts..and found I had to use a header bolt on the lower bolt hole of the mount..this is from most of the time this pan is used..Im thinking motor plates are used..In place of motor mounts.. this pan was picked out for use. as it was lighter then a steel pan.and this Build is to drop as much weight of the front of the car with bolt on parts on the market.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Ahhh. The jigsaw puzzle headers with slip on collectors. I know them well. The only easy way to get big tube headers on a BBC in a third gen that's not a tube chassis car.

I have to remove the front 2 tubes on the LH side and loosen the other 2 tubes to get my starter out. One tube is dimpled for clearance for one of the starter bolts and the bolt won't come out without the tube moved out of the way. I have another tube with a huge dimple to clear a suspension tube. Both dimples created by me to get them to fit. There's a good youtube program on headers and it shows dyno testing. Even with lots of clearance dimples, performance does not suffer.

Mine are first generation Ed Quay headers with the loop on top of the frame rail. Second gen design moved the loop under the car.

As nice as mine are, I'd still rather build a custom set to fit my specific application. An equal length primary tube exiting through the fender would be nice also however with a bottom exit, it allows me to run a larger race muffler. After a day of racing, having mufflers is very desirable.

My primary tubes are ceramic coated. Not as pretty as when they were new but it sure reduces under hood temperatures. I cleaned them up a few years ago. Better than what they were but still not as nice as new.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

have to cut holes in the inner fender..just starting to remove wiring. pulled the AC delete box (getting chrome plated ) dropped it off to day with brake booster and some other small parts.
as soon as the starter and header bolts show up.. Ill start the mock up on the eng stand.. with K member.. Dans info with the headers names Sphon/BMR/Ajay and 1 more as K members. his headers are made to fit..so Im thinking they will fit the UMI K Member..

remember if its not Fast..you chrome it... I Like to say.. Chrome it.. even if its fast.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

lots of room for the plug wires..plugs.

starter fits nice in the pocket (oil pan) but if I had to swap it out I would have to drop the 2 tubes next to it.. no Biggy. it clears the block and headers..and could be clocked 360deg. just needed to be moved/clocked up 1/8th inch.. nice fit! ea tube is free..so its easy to install with eng in the car...

it was fun putting the puzzle together..as ea tube is free..not looking forward to cutting the holes..(shes my baby) but there comes a time..to keep things easy..to work on..and I hated doing plugs on the SBC..from what I can tell it should be Cake with the BBC..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

I don't like those infinite clocking starters. Figure out where the starter position needs to be and red loctite the retaining screw. I had one loosen off and the starter turned until the power post started arcing on a header tube.

I now run a basic GM OEM mini starter and it works just fine.

I've seen headers like that before that go over the frame rail then back under the car. I want all 4 tubes over the frame rail and exit out the side of the fender but making a set like that all equal length is a lot of work. For a blower/turbo car, not so bad.

If I had to do it all again, I wouldn't even start with a production car. Spend the bucks and go right to a tube chassis. Much easier and cheaper in the long run.
