Worst tires for our cars

Grand Spirit Aqua Flow GTX 245/50VR16's M&S Rated

These are on my car now. (Came on the car when I bought it)
They are the worst tires ever. At least in the rain. I have no idea how much these things cost. It doesn't matter.

Tread wear seems ok. Traction on dry pavement seems good. Road holding ability at high speeds is lacking. And for a tire with Aqua flow in the name the rain performance is the WORST of any tire I have ever seen.

These tires make my car undrivable in the rain. At 30 miles an hour they hydroplaned and almost sent me into a light post. For sure these are tires to avoid.

The Tire from Hell is the Stock Goodyear Gatorbacks 245/50/vr16 from the factory.
Just spit on the road and that tire breaks loose. Good on the dry but don't drive in the wet.

87WS6 08-27-2003 11:57 AM

That's the way mine are. I am going to get new tires and burn the Spirits off doing burnouts. In first gear my car likes to leave streaks of those tires all over the place.

Jim85IROC 08-27-2003 01:40 PM

any cheap, no-name tire sucks. My Vette came with Generals, and they absolutely suck. Ever see a nearly stock L98 get sideways in 2nd gear?

Last night in the rain I broke it loose in 4th gear with minimal throttle effort.

The futuras on my Sport Coupe were even worse. That car had the 2.8 and I used to be able to break it free in 3rd gear when it was raining.

the nitto 555r drags are real good in the rain! I used all sorts of tires and they are really good surprising for a tire with that much contact area. they break loose if you try but, driving normal there is no problem. I had a set of cheapo tires before and even when it was dry out you could light them up in smoke and very fast speeds.

oh man the worst crappiest tires I ever had were Regal Sport Challengers, they wore out in like 10k with minimal buring out

VERTIGO Z28 09-03-2003 12:52 AM

tires?

I thought they were called ASPHALT CRAYONS, and their job was to leave giant lines in the street.:burnout:

i just ride around on the E.T.'s.. i live in AZ.. whats rain!??!

B4Ctom1 09-04-2003 12:22 PM

no the tires from hell are the stock 215/65/15 or 215/60/15 (depending on which catalog you looked in) that came on the factory 15" alum rallys

Timz2882 09-04-2003 09:48 PM

depends which Futura tires you get. my brother has the ultra Z's and he pulled a 2.06 60' at the track with a small burnout and a almost stock 91 z28 with 130,000. i have the futura gls super sport tires and all there good for is everyday driving suck onthe track, 2.4-2.3 60' times with my car.

2.73's Suck 09-04-2003 09:55 PM

yea im rockin the futuras right now too, well in the back, and not only are they good on the street and in the rain but they NEVER wear out with even the smokiest of tire spinning. Ill have to see on the camaro tho I dont really beat on it, I had them on my rx7 and 7k rpm clutch drops were not uncommon with that car.

Yeah If I lived over there it would be much less of a concern. I used to and I remember it not raining very much.

One of the biggest things over there that I get a kick out of is when they talk about it being 110 in the shade.

I am sitting thinking, Shade? I don't remember seeing shade!?!?

my eyelids got burnt in AZ

Well I haven't tried any other tires on mine yet, but I have to agree that the stock Gatorbacks are terrible! I've been trying to kill them for the past year and they won't wear down! It seems that the compound is iron like!

I just bought 4 new Assurety 245-50-16 tires for my 88 form. WS-6 from sears for 94.00 ea. They are made by bridgstone for sears. and so far they are working great. Good traction wet or dry, and very quiet on the road! All I can hear now is my exaust pipes. They are an all season high perf. directional tire speed rated to 139 mph. so far they are out performing the pontenza's I took off. Can't wait for the next auto-X so I can really flog em hard. :driving:

I have down countless burnouts with my Eagle F1's and they are still gripping like glue on any dry surface. When it's wet out it is a different story, but remember that our cars have lousy front-rear weight distribution. Especially when all of us have more than stock power. In the dry the car hooks like mad, it goes sideways at over 60 mph when I try to pass someone with more than half throttle in the rain. I don't think we can have it both ways guys, but the F1's definitely are a good tire.

84H.O.Trans Am 09-12-2003 09:55 PM

..i have the 235/60r15 radial T/A's on my mostly stock 84 Trans Am...it grips good in the rain and these tires do much better then the stock 215/65/r15 whatevers that came on the car...

SLP IROC-Z 09-13-2003 12:08 PM

one thing u cant do is expect a tire that performs good on the track to perform good on the street. i noticed one comment like that above. i have really nice tires, Toyo Proxes Fz4s they are excellent street tires, they are horrible at the track, traction, cornering, braking, rain driving these tires are great. at the track its like their on ice. i think another extremely horrible tire is the Yokohama A540s , i had em they no longer make em, but at 20mph in first gear if i floored it the car would light the tires till i shifted to 2nd, horrible horrible tire everywhere.

That's expected. The more the tire wears down, the harder it becomes. That is only good for dry performance.

I LIVE IN AZ!!!, i think we have ashes falling from the sky more than anything...

"The Tire from Hell is the Stock Goodyear Gatorbacks 245/50/vr16 from the factory.

Amen brother I took my firestone firehawk tires with the rain groove that they use in racing off my typhoon 2 or 3yrs ago. Now driving in the rain is like 60 no problem except for a little wheel spin off the line.
