Tires

I never had traction with my 305 and I had Cooper Cobra H rated 245/50R16 on at about 25 psi. When I drop the 383c.i. in I think I'm going to burn the rear tires down then get a set of good tires. I was thinking of getting 255/50R16's of BF Goodrich Drag Radial TA's or Nittos. What do you guys think? Which would grip better and which would last longer? When I get some money after the new engine (picking it up on 11-2) is in the car I'm going to get some rear suspention mods so I got that covered but I really need to know about the tires. Thanks.

The BFG Drag Radials will grip a bit better, but they won't last for crap. Expect to replace them every 4,000 miles. For my money, I would buy the Nitto's specifically for their longevity. As much as I like BFG, I don't really want to be constantly replacing my rear tires.

BTW - I use the BFG G-Force T/A KDW tires, and they grip pretty damn good. You might want to try them if you are mostly on the street.

Yea thats what I thought about the Drag Radials. The car is only going to be drivin on the weekends on Saturday after work and Sunday and my buddy says he'll trailer it to the track wenever I want to go so. I think I'll check out the Nittos then since everyonce in a while I'll want to burn the tires on the street.

my advice would be buy an extra pair of wheels, and put some bfg drag radials on those and just put em on at the track. buy some kuhmo ecsta supra 712s for on the street. you can burn the **** outta them. ive had my car for a year, put prolly 15k miles on it, dont remember how much the tires were worn down when i bought the car, but theyve been through ALOT of burnouts, prolly about 20 runs at the track heating them decently, but they still would never hook. I like to call them drifting tires:D

ive got bfg kdw's 27540zr17 on my car. Ive pulled 1.9 60ft times with them set at 25 psi. just enough burnout to get a little smoke and they grip like crazy. different story on the street though...

yeah the bfg drag radials are'nt for your normal highway use or anything long distance. heat is our nemesis there. nittos will go on the highway from what I've found. mine have lasted for about 2 years (11,000 miles). they don't grip well comapred to the bfg drag radial, but that's what a good set of M/T et streets are for. i like beeing able to spin the nittos at 40mph to embarrass the ricers, but like to have my ET streets and no slip for the track. i noticed ur keeping th 5 spd with the 383?? YIKES!!! stock 5 spd is only rated to 250hp so i hope yours isn't stock. lol good luck hope all of us helped out.

I think I'll just spin the crap out of my current tires. The trans is only going to be in there for the winter hopefully. I'm going to get a G-force trans. When I have the new trans I'm going to try to get a new set of rims and use my old rear rims for the track. I think I'll get a set of the BF drag radials. You guy know were I can get a set of Black Diamond spoke Trans Am rims, mine are not really worth getting reconditioned. The Pontiac dealership wants about $1,300. They have to be almost perfect because they will be the one's on the car and I dont drive my car in the rain or snow or anything and I keep it really really clean. Oh I work for a Ford Dealership as a Porter (I hate Fords) and one of my guys in parts has a brother who ownes a tire warehouse. I can get Fulkons (It think there called) for dirt cheap. I got a set of Z rated ones for the front and there awsome so I think thats what I'm going to get for the rear on the streat. I got 2 for like $130. I think I'll get a set of 255/50R16's for the rear since they have a awsome wear rating but they seam sticky as hell. I can't wait to get that 383 in and watch that smoke cloud coming from the back then see those long dark posi marks. Not that is doesnt do that on a cold day already but not through 3rd like I'm hopeing.

look on ebay or classified throughout the f-body boards. i got a pretty good set of 16x8 iroc rims 88-90 style for 200 bucks. sanded and reclear coated them and they looked like new.
